The idea behind Music Zhejiang Film Season 1 is to create an interaction among scenery, poetry, and music, and to display the poetic splendor of Zhejiang and Chinese national music. Poetry, calligraphy, rituals and music are the classics of Confucianism in ancient China. Folk music, as a traditional instrumental music performance, is known as the national music. Among a myriad of genres of Chinese folk music, Jiangnan stringed and wind music is born and grown in the south Yangtze River region, and takes root in the heart of local people. Zhejiang Province is a delightful image of poetry, scenery, and music. The ensemble is the Sheng Wan Shifan Guyuefang (圣莞十番古乐坊). The term "shifan" (十番, meaning "many kinds," literally "ten kinds") refers to a large ensemble comprising many kinds of instruments, usually including diverse types of wind, string, and percussion instruments. Such ensembles were especially popular for ceremonial and festive music in many parts of China, especially during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), and many shifan traditions continue to the present. The term "sheng wan" (圣莞, literally "sage smiling") derives from a passage in the "Analects" of Confucius: 「子之武城，闻弦歌之声，夫子莞尔而笑」(The Master, having come to Wucheng, heard there the sound of stringed instruments and singing. Well pleased and smiling,...), with the tradition's aim being to educate disciples to "learn from the sages and enjoy a joyful experience (“学圣贤、享欢乐”). Probably filmed at various theaters in Xinchang County (新昌县), southeastern Shaoxing (绍兴市), Zhejiang province, east-central China, c. 2017. Shifan music is known to have been heard in Xinchang County as early as the year 1299, during the Yuan Dynasty. The tradition of Xinchang shifan in particular originated in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty (1820-1850), when two brothers from Huangtan Village (黄坛村), Wozhou Town (沃洲镇), Xinchang County (新昌县), who had been doing business in Suzhou and Hangzhou, decided to start a shifan ensemble in the village in order to provide its residents with an activity that would keep them away from opium, something that had become a serious problem at that time. In Xinchang County, the genre has been passed down for nearly 200 years, and its scores are preserved in gongche notation (Chinese: gongche pu, 工尺谱). In 1978, many residents of Huangtan Village were resettled due to the building of the Changzhao Reservoir (长诏水库), which inundated the village, and the ensemble's members were dispersed throughout the countryside. This disruption, combined with the fact that the group's senior members started dying one after another, caused the tradition to face a crisis of possible loss. In January 2007, a deep sense of cultural responsibility moved Mr. Sun Julin (石菊林, b. 1943), a Huangtan native who had been relocated to Xiayi Village (下衣村), Meizhu Town (梅渚镇) in 1978 (in 2019 Meizhu Town was merged into the newly created Chengtan Subdistrict, 澄潭街道), to devote himself to saving his village's shifan tradition from extinction. He searched throughout the scattered villages for shifan descendants, eventually locating eight veteran performers who were still living, and enlisted more than a dozen of their descendants as apprentices. He purchased additional musical instruments for the ensemble to use, spending 10,000 yuan of his own money in the process. On January 10, 2007 the Sheng Wan Shifan Guyuefang (圣莞十番古乐坊) was officially established. Under the leadership of the veteran artists, the group practiced for several months, giving their debut performance on May 5, 2007, which made the eight senior artists extremely excited. Sun's six years of unremitting devotion to this aim paid off: by the 2010s, the ensemble had achieved renown throughout Xinchang County and Zhejiang province, and its music was broadcast on China National Radio in 2014, as part of the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The ensemble, which has a membership that ranges between 20 and 30, continues to train members of the next generation, in order to ensure that the Xinchang shifan will have successors to carry the tradition into the future. Since 2009, Sun Julin has held the status of Municipal-Level and County-Level Representative Transmitter of Xinchang shifan. In 2006, the tradition of Xinchang shifan was included in the First Batch of the Shaoxing Municipality Intangible Cultural Heritage List (第一批绍兴市非物质文化遗产名录). Zhejiang Zheng features brightness, delicacy, and elegance. Butterfly Girls Band is a national troupe composed of young and beautiful female artists in Zhejiang Song & Dance Theatre. Its specialty is playing local music of Zhejiang province and Jiangnan Sizhu, a genre of traditional Chinese instrumental music that thrives in south China. A mini-documentary about Xinchang shifan (新昌十番), also known as sheng wan shifan (圣莞十番), a genre of traditional instrumental ensemble music from Xinchang County (新昌县), southeastern Shaoxing (绍兴市), Zhejiang province, east-central China. The term "shifan" (十番, meaning "many kinds," literally "ten kinds") refers to a large ensemble comprising many kinds of instruments, usually including diverse types of wind, string, and percussion instruments. Such ensembles were especially popular for ceremonial and festive music in many parts of China, especially during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), and many shifan traditions continue to the present. The term "sheng wan" (圣莞, literally "sage smiling") derives from a passage in the "Analects" of Confucius: 「子之武城，闻弦歌之声，夫子莞尔而笑」(The Master, having come to Wucheng, heard there the sound of stringed instruments and singing. Well pleased and smiling,...), with the tradition's aim being to educate disciples to "learn from the sages and enjoy a joyful experience (“学圣贤、享欢乐”). Filmed primarily in Chengtan Subdistrict (澄潭街道), Xinchang County (新昌县), southeastern Shaoxing (绍兴市), Zhejiang province, east-central China. The film was released c. March 6, 2016. Shifan music is known to have been heard in Xinchang County as early as the year 1299, during the Yuan Dynasty. The tradition of Xinchang shifan in particular originated in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty (1820-1850), when two brothers from Huangtan Village (黄坛村), Wozhou Town (沃洲镇), Xinchang County (新昌县), who had been doing business in Suzhou and Hangzhou, decided to start a shifan ensemble in the village in order to provide its residents with an activity that would keep them away from opium, something that had become a serious problem at that time. In Xinchang County, the genre has been passed down for nearly 200 years, and its scores are preserved in gongche notation (Chinese: gongche pu, 工尺谱). In 1978, many residents of Huangtan Village were resettled due to the building of the Changzhao Reservoir (长诏水库), which inundated the village, and the ensemble's members were dispersed throughout the countryside. This disruption, combined with the fact that the group's senior members started dying one after another, caused the tradition to face a crisis of possible loss. In January 2007, a deep sense of cultural responsibility moved Mr. Sun Julin (石菊林, b. 1943), a Huangtan native who had been relocated to Xiayi Village (下衣村), Meizhu Town (梅渚镇) in 1978 (in 2019 Meizhu Town was merged into the newly created Chengtan Subdistrict, 澄潭街道), to devote himself to saving his village's shifan tradition from extinction. He searched throughout the scattered villages for shifan descendants, eventually locating eight veteran performers who were still living, and enlisted more than a dozen of their descendants as apprentices. He purchased additional musical instruments for the ensemble to use, spending 10,000 yuan of his own money in the process. On January 10, 2007 the Sheng Wan Shifan Guyuefang (圣莞十番古乐坊) was officially established. Under the leadership of the veteran artists, the group practiced for several months, giving their debut performance on May 5, 2007, which made the eight senior artists extremely excited. Sun's six years of unremitting devotion to this aim paid off: by the 2010s, the ensemble had achieved renown throughout Xinchang County and Zhejiang province, and its music was broadcast on China National Radio in 2014, as part of the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The ensemble, which has a membership that ranges between 20 and 30, continues to train members of the next generation, in order to ensure that the Xinchang shifan will have successors to carry the tradition into the future. Since 2009, Sun Julin has held the status of Municipal-Level and County-Level Representative Transmitter of Xinchang shifan. In 2006, the tradition of Xinchang shifan was included in the First Batch of the Shaoxing Municipality Intangible Cultural Heritage List (第一批绍兴市非物质文化遗产名录). A performance of Xiahemen shifan (厦河门十番, also called Xiahe shifan, 厦河十番) music from Xiahe village (厦河村), Zijin Subdistrict (紫金街道), Liandu District (莲都区), Lishui (丽水市), southwestern Zhejiang province, southern China. Lishui borders Quzhou, Jinhua, and Taizhou to the north, Wenzhou to the southeast, and Fujian province to the southwest. The group performing here is a community ensemble based in Xiahe village. Filmed at the Liandu District Intangible Heritage Protection Center (莲都区非遗保护中心) in Liandu District (莲都区), Lishui (丽水市), Zhejiang province, southern China, August 8, 2016. The famous yangqin (扬琴, hammered dulcimer) soloist Zhang Xia (张侠) joined this performance as guest artist, although she did not play on this particular set of pieces. A performance of a suite of pieces from the tradition of Yuyao shifan (余姚十番), a genre of traditional shifan luogu (十番锣鼓) music from Yuyao (余姚市), Ningbo (宁波市), northeastern Zhejiang province, eastern China, performed by an ensemble from Ganjialu village (干家路村), Langxia Sub-District (朗霞街道), Yuyao (余姚市), Ningbo (宁波市), northeastern Zhejiang province, eastern China. Most villages in Yuyao have a resident Yuyao shifan ensemble, which performs for special occasions and usually numbers between 6 and 8 performers at minimum, or up to 10 to 20 performers for larger ensembles. Such ensembles were very popular for ceremonial and festive music in many parts of China, especially during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), and many shifan traditions, including Louta xi shifan, continue to be performed to the present day. There are two varieties of Yuyao shifan: xi shifan (细十番), which uses quieter string and wind instruments; and cu shifan (粗十番), which uses loud wind instruments such as suona (唢呐, shawm) and percussion. Because it encompasses these two styles, Yuyao shifan is also referred to as zafan (杂番) or cu-xi zafan (粗细杂番), which can be translated loosely as "coarse [and] fine miscellaneous varieties." In this video, the music is referred to as Ganjialu village cu-xi shifan (干家路村粗细十番), translating as "coarse [and] fine shifan [music] from Ganjialu village."
