Go to wikipedia.org and select the WikiPedia for your desired country. In this video I chose 🤍 2. In the upper-right corner, click “create an account”. Put in all the relevant info such as your username and password. 3. Verify your email and login into your new account. 4. Click on “preferences”, then “editing", and then select "Show me both editor tabs" on the "Editing mode" dropdown menu. 5. Click on "sandbox" in the upper-right corner. This is where you'll be able to make your Wikipedia page. You will be able to write your WikiPedia page in full detail. The first thing you should do is create a heading for your page title. I recommend you use the 'visual editor' since it's more user friendly. The toolbar on top gives you all the tools you need to format your page. You can add citations, references, lists, tables, special characters, internal and external links, and various other effects. This toolbar gives you all the tools to make your Wikipedia page come to life! If you still need help, just go to this link: 🤍 It will teach you and guide you in full detail on how to create your first Wikipedia article. 6. After you written your page, it's time to publish it. You can do this by clicking on the "publish page..." button. This will post your wikipedia page on the sandbox. Which you can then move to the main space. 7. To move your Wikipedia page to the main space you need to meet two requirements. The first one is that you need to have at least a 4-day old account. The second requirement is that you need to have made at least 10 edits with your Wikipedia account. 8. After the page is moved from the sandbox to the main space, you will most likely get plenty of feedback from Wikipedia's community on what can be improved on your page. Your Wikipedia page will most likely not stick on the first try, but don't get discouraged. Just take all the feedback into consideration and try again. 9. Wikipedia is free to edit, so we each can play a part, so I’m re-sharing a guide (now with video) for those who don’t know where to start! As I edit my thesis someone asked me about a different kind of editing, so here’s a really rough video walking you through some slides I made a few years ago for Wikipedia #WomeninSTEM edit-a-thon so it has extra info on making articles about female scientists, but most of it is relevant for anyone who wants to try out Wikipedia editing. I’m not an expert so this is in no way a comprehensive (and definitely not a great) guide - but I give a bunch of links to places you can find all the various guides and tools out there that helped me get started. (Made more great progress today and now I can officially say next month I defend!) blog form: 🤍 And here are links to the those slides which have all those live links - just click on the underlined text for more⠀ powerpoint: 🤍 ⠀ PDF: 🤍 ⠀ Like it or not, Wikipedia is one of the main sources people turn to to get information - on everything from people, to companies, to molecules. So it’s really important that that information is accurate - and the accuracy of the information depends upon all of us because the content is written and edited by everyday folks like us who’ve decided to take to the keyboard, volunteer a little time, and become a “Wikipedia editor.” ⠀ It’s too hard to try to fit everything into a post, so I decided I’d make a few figures highlighting some main points, but the most important content if you’re serious about getting started is in these slides⠀ ⠀ Don’t worry, it’s not a huge time investment (unless you want it to be) - you can edit as much or as little as you want - create whole new articles or just fix some punctuation. The biggest investment time-wise is getting started and getting used to working in the Wikiverse. ⠀But starting is the hardest part, so today I wanted to share some of what I shared when I held those edit-a-thon training sessions. Note: I am definitely NOT an expert on all this and I have to look stuff up and ask questions all the time. Thankfully, Wikipedia has a lot of great “how-to” guides (some of which I’ll link to). Still, it’s easy to get lost, but it’s also easy to find help - the teahouse is your friend! remember that! The teahouse is a page where you can ask questions and get them answered, and it’s designed for newbies so the answerers are patient with you 🤍 ⠀ ⠀ For scientists, getting used to Wikipedia can pose a unique challenge since we are used to “primary sources” - original research and “secondary sources” - things like review articles that report on those primary sources. But Wikipedia isn’t either of those - it’s an encyclopedia, so the sources you cite need to be at least secondary sources - so don’t just cite someone’s paper saying they discovered something - cite someone else, like a newspaper or a review article, saying that they discovered something. ⠀ ⠀ Another biggie is that you can’t (that is, you shouldn’t) edit your own page or the page of someone or something that you’re strongly connected to. Don’t worry - being in love with a protein and editing its page doesn’t count for this restriction. But what you also can’t do is just go stick in your own primary research into the article on that protein. This goes back to that needing a secondary source thing. ⠀ ⠀ The secondary source requirement is meant in part to prevent people from swamping Wikipedia with articles on their moms, friends, dogs, etc. and making it even harder for Wikipedia editors to keep up with spammers & trollers (Wikipedia may seem like an anarchy but it does have “moderators” as well as bots that try to maintain order).⠀ ⠀ But the secondary source requirement can create challenges when you go to create pages for scientists, because even really important scientists usually don’t get much outside press and for someone to be considered “notable” enough to have their own article, they have to have sources you can cite. ⠀ ⠀ This is a great guide for writing articles about women: 🤍 and it’s broadly applicable. And here’s a great getting started tutorial: 🤍 and an interactive one: 🤍 ⠀ ⠀⠀ Final note: Wikipedia is just one part of the “Wikiverse” - there’s also things like Wikidata and, importantly, Wikimedia Commons, where you can find and share images and graphics - some of mine are there and I would upload more, just don’t have time. You can never have enough. Buzzkill - Kill 10 brawlers with any saw launcher. They never saw it coming. Legend Has It - Craft your first Legendary Weapon or Vehicle and start a legend of your own. Tip o' the Hat - Knock an enemy's helmet off with a charged melee attack. Perk-olate - Unlock the first level for all Perks. Archery Expert - Kill an enemy more than 100m away with a basic arrow. The Rance Allen Group was a gospel music group formed in Monroe, Michigan, and based in Toledo, Ohio, named after its lead vocalist, Bishop Rance Allen. Formed by vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and songwriter Rance Allen (b. Monroe, Michigan) with his brothers Tom (drums) and Steve (bass guitar); another brother, Esau (percussionist), joined the group on an intermittent basis. During an appearance at a gospel talent contest in Detroit, Michigan, they came to the attention of one of the judges, record promoter Dave Clark, who worked for Stax Records.The group was the first to be signed to the Stax imprint Gospel Truth, and they recorded for the Stax organization throughout the 1970s. In 1972, the group appeared in the documentary film Wattstax.Following this appearance, the group was named "Best Religious Group" by the National Association of Television and Radio Announcers (NATRA). David Porter co-produced the group's 1975 album A Soulful Experience, for which he wrote an autobiographical song, "Just Found Me" The group's incorporation of rock and soul into traditional black gospel music prefigure the crossover success of such artists as Amy Grant, Andrae Crouch, and The Winans. In 1978, the group had a Top 30 R&B hit, "I Belong to You." The group released one of its most famous songs, Miracle Worker, in spring 2000. Rance Allen Rance Allen November 20, 1948 – October 31, 2020, was an American Bishop, Minister, and gospel musician, and the founder and leader of the famed Rance Allen Group. Known for his extremely wide vocal range and powerful singing voice, Allen became known as the main lead vocalist and the leader of the influential group. He was the senior pastor of the New Bethel Church Of God In Christ in Toledo, Ohio, since its July 1985 establishment.[9] In November 2011, Rance Allen was elevated to the office of Bishop in the Church of God in Christ, for the Michigan Northwestern Harvest Jurisdiction. Allen was born in 1948 in Monroe, Michigan to Thomas and Emma Pearl Allen. He had 11 siblings: six sisters and five brothers. Allen founded the Rance Allen Group in Detroit in 1969 joined by his brothers Thomas and Steve. Allen was married to Ellen Marie Allen (née Groves). The two were married on December 1, 1970. The couple had no children together. Allen and his group had performed with many gospel musicians throughout the country, including Andrae Crouch, Marvin Winans, Bebe and Cece Winans, the Clark Sisters, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribbett, Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, and Mary McLaurine Glover. He also performed for President Barack Obama at a White House Celebration of Gospel Music and was nominated for five Grammy Awards. Allen died on October 31, 2020 from complications due to a recent medical procedure.
