The interoperability of data presupposes a common understanding about how to prepare and structure data, how to make them available on different platforms to encourage their use, reuse, modification and their selection and transformation for different purposes. The aggregation of data about heritage and hazards allows to plan and systematize practices of intervention useful both in the preservation of the sites, and in the actions to be carried out during and after the emergency. Data can be used to increase awareness about risks and self-protection and citizens can contribute to integrate and monitor data. Here the interview to John Andersson, Wikimedia Sweden who talked about Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wiki Loves Monuments, as sources of data on cultural heritage.

Reaching the world through free licenses and crowdsourced platforms Axel Petterson (Wikimedia Sverige) and Richard Nevell (Wikimedia UK) The talk highlights the possibilities created when cooperating with the Wikimedia movement. Museums and archives can reach millions of people, utilize the power of the crowd and connect their own collections to other collections globally, and also to services downstream (that uses the freely licensed material on Wikimedia’s projects). A major new initiative , Connected Open Heritage, focus on bringing data and media about cultural heritage at risk onto Wikimedia’s platforms. This is done in cooperation with UNESCO and a number of other organizations. Through an external grant museums with collections around cultural heritage can be supported without cost. 🤍dcdcconference.com DCDC16 videos produced by Iconic Productions (🤍

How do we think of outputs, outcomes, and impact when we develop Wikimedia education projects? How do we measure the success of a Wikimedia education project beyond Wiki-metrics? This session will focus on the discussion of measurable learning outcomes in Wikimedia education initiatives. It will allow participants to think about strategies that put learning experiences front and center when planning a Wikimedia education project, and the tools needed to evaluate the impact our projects have in education interventions. It will further provide participants with knowledge and skills to advocate for the value of Wikimedia projects in education. Session page: 🤍
“[We are] committed to seeking ways to minimize the impact of our activities on the environment” ~ Wikimedia Board of Trustees, Feb 2017 Resolution This session will review the resolution that the Wikimedia Board requested in 2017 and the investigative progress to date. Session page: 🤍
Over the last 18 years, the Wikimedia Movement formed organically, allowing for a diversity of motivations, ways of working, and desired impacts that reach far beyond measurable pageviews and content pages into many different parts of society. Yet at the same time, this diversity has also created a shared community of practice that spans many parts of the world, and does many of the same things: convening different stakeholders, with different goals to create educational content and educational communities around the Wikimedia projects. Ultimately organizers are the front door for achieving the aims of the movement direction. During the first half of 2019, the Wikimedia Foundation completed a generative study, following the earlier examples of New Editors or New Readers. The new Movement Organizers research seeks to understand and articulate the shared challenges across the global organizing community. This research can help staff at the Wikimedia Foundation as well as community leaders see and evaluate these challenges and then build local and international collaborations to design support for existing organizers and better welcome new organizers into the community. During this session, we will share key findings from the Movement Organizers research in an introductory presentation (30-40 minutes); then invite members of affiliates and other community groups who have run programs for supporting organizers, to talk about their experience designing for growing and developing organizers (25-30 minutes); 20-30 minutes for questions, feedback and thinking about how community members can provide organizer support to their communities. If we have interest at the end of the session, we will find one of the empty meetup space classrooms to further discuss findings, and provide space for folks to talk about the various components of the research Session page: 🤍

Akvopedia and Wikimedia is planning to work together on content about sustainable development. Taking content from the Akvopedia water and sanitation portals and migrating it to Wikibooks and Wikiversity content.
In 2019, Wikimedia Commons is undergoing a major update: it is now possible to describe files on Wikimedia Commons with multilingual, structured, machine-readable data from Wikidata. Structured Data on Commons opens many new perspectives for content partnerships and GLAM-Wiki projects that use Wikimedia Commons, including multilingual descriptions and more refined exchange of data between institutions and Wikimedia projects. In the past year, several GLAM institutions and Wikimedia communities have worked on pilot projects that explore and demonstrate the intricacies and potential of structured data for GLAM-Wiki activities. After a brief presentation about the new features on Wikimedia Commons, there is a panel and Q&A session, with demonstrations and discussions around these pilot projects. Session page: 🤍

Since 2016, the New Readers program at the Wikimedia Foundation has been working with communities in Iraq, Nigeria, India and Mexico to increase awareness of our projects. In 2018, Inspire New Readers campaign was run in which 8 community projects focused at increasing awareness of Wikimedia projects were funded. After this pilot, since January 2019, Rapid grants are available to fund campaigns focused at increasing awareness of Wikimedia projects. Two different types of campaigns can be funded; General promotion campaigns (such as promoting a project on facebook) and Video campaigns (producing a promotional video and promoting it on social media), with an exception of an extra 1000 USD for the latter. This session aims to demonstrate how to apply and complete a project to increase awareness of Wikimedia projects or campaigns using rapid grants. Session page: 🤍
In this introductory panel for the Education Space of Wikimania 2019, we will hold a discussion on why UNESCO's SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is a valuable framework that participants in the Open Education movement should care about. Our panelist will represent different perspectives, from ones in the Wikimedia Movement, to others from the broader Open Education Movement. Together we will discuss why and how is would make sense to join forces and combine efforts to advance Open Education, with Wikimedia in Education efforts being one part of a much larger global picture. What’s in this episode? Affiliates are the recognized organizations and groups in the Wikimedia movement that support volunteers, advocate for free knowledge and come together as the backbone of the movement. We talk about how Wikimedia’s somewhat ad hoc affiliate landscape has emerged, discuss the relationship between organizations and communities, and imagine what role affiliates can play in a future global council. We hear from.. a movement veteran, Andrew Lih, and Wikimedia Norge’s Executive Director, Elisabeth Carrera. They also share their takes on the draft movement charter!
