It owns the internet domain names of most movement projects and hosts sites like Wikipedia. The foundation was founded in 2003 by Jimmy Wales as a way to fund Wikipedia and its sibling projects through non-profit means. As of 2017, the foundation employs over 300 people, with annual revenues in excess of US$109.9 million. María Sefidari is chair of the board. Katherine Maher has been the executive director since March 2016. Jimmy Wales born in August 7, 1966, is an American-British Internet entrepreneur. He is a co-founder of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the for-profit web hosting company Wikia. Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in finance from Auburn University and the University of Alabama respectively. After graduate, Wales taught at two universities; however, he departed before completing a PhD to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. Jimmy Wales has been married three times. At the age of twenty, he married Pamela Green, a co-worker at a grocery store in Alabama. They divorced in 1993.He met his second wife, Christine Rohan, through a friend in Chicago while she was working as a steel trader for Mitsubishi. The couple were married in Monroe County, Florida in March 1997, and had a daughter before separating in 2008. Wales moved to San Diego in 1998, and after disappointing with the housing market there, relocated in 2002 to St. Petersburg, Florida. Wales had a brief relationship with Canadian conservative columnist Rachel Marsden in 2008 that began after Marsden contacted Wales about her Wikipedia biography. After accusations that Wales's relationship constituted a conflict of interest, Wales stated that there had been a relationship but that it was over and said that it had not influenced any matters on Wikipedia, a claim which was disputed by Marsden. Wales married Kate Garvey at Wesley's Chapel in London on October 6, 2012. She is Tony Blair's former diary secretary, whom Wales met in Davos, Switzerland. Wales has three daughters: one with Rohan and two with Garvey. Wales is an atheist. In an interview with Big Think, he said his personal philosophy is firmly rooted in reason and he is a complete non-believer. As of 2012, he lives in London, England. Privately, Wales is a passionate cook. He cooks often, and, by his own account, quite well.[139]

Descriptions: As the largest Open Educational Resource in the world, the various projects associated with the Wikimedia Foundation, provides an interesting opportunity for institutions of higher learning in terms of learning, teaching and research support. This paper explores areas for integration and use of certain Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia and Wikidata, based on activities at universities that have successfully implemented Wikimedia projects. In addition, this presentation proposes that, through the use of Wikimedia projects, Universities should contribute to the Africanisation of content available in the world. During this 1 hour session, specific focus will be given to Wikimedia projects and the optimization of the availability of this global information structure towards increasingly making known and accessible content emanating from Africa about African environments, and in indigenous African languages. English Wikipedia Quality Dynamics and the Case of WikiProject Women Scientists by Aaron Halfaker With every productive edit, Wikipedia is steadily progressing towards higher and higher quality. In order to track quality improvements, Wikipedians have developed an article quality assessment rating scale that ranges from "Stub" at the bottom to "Featured Articles" at the top. While this quality scale has the promise of giving us insights into the dynamics of quality improvements in Wikipedia, it is hard to use due to the sporadic nature of manual re-assessments. By developing a highly accurate prediction model (based on work by Warncke-Wang et al.), we've developed a method to assess an articles quality at any point in history. Using this model, we explore general trends in quality in Wikipedia and compare these trends to those of an interesting cross-section: Articles tagged by WikiProject Women Scientists. Results suggest that articles about women scientists were lower quality than the rest of the wiki until mid-2013, after which a dramatic shift occurred towards higher quality. This shift may correlate with (and even be caused by) this WikiProjects initiatives. Privacy, Anonymity, and Perceived Risk in Open Collaboration. A Study of Tor Users and Wikipedians by Andrea Forte In a recent qualitative study to be published at CSCW 2017, collaborators Rachel Greenstadt, Naz Andalibi, and I examined privacy practices and concerns among contributors to open collaboration projects. We collected interview data from people who use the anonymity network Tor who also contribute to online projects and from Wikipedia editors who are concerned about their privacy to better understand how privacy concerns impact participation in open collaboration projects. We found that risks perceived by contributors to open collaboration projects include threats of surveillance, violence, harassment, opportunity loss, reputation loss, and fear for loved ones. We explain participants’ operational and technical strategies for mitigating these risks and how these strategies affect their contributions. Finally, we discuss chilling effects associated with privacy loss, the need for open collaboration projects to go beyond attracting and educating participants to consider their privacy, and some of the social and technical approaches that could be explored to mitigate risk at a project or community level.

In the last decade, topic models have become a common tool for navigating such datasets even across languages. This talk investigates the foundational research that allows successful tools for these data exploration tasks: how to know when you have an effective model of the dataset; how to correct bad models; how to measure topic model effectiveness; and how to detect framing and spin using these techniques. After introducing topic models, I argue why traditional measures of topic model quality-borrowed from machine learning-are inconsistent with how topic models are actually used. In response, I describe interactive topic modeling, a technique that enables users to impart their insights and preferences to models in a principled, interactive way. They specialise in rehabilitating injured, orphaned and pet wombats. They help orphaned wombats and teach them the necessary skills so that they can return and be released into the Australian bush, where they belong. The sanctuary was started initially to deal with injured wombats but over the years the amount of orphans or 'pet' wombats they receive has increased substantially. Pet wombats in particular take a lot of time and dedication to reverse the damage done by humans but every wombat deserves the chance to live where it belongs. Their work includes relocating wombats, assisting councils and farmers, educating children and people in general about wombats. They have observed big changes over the years in terms of wombat location, injuries, stress on populations and so much more. Education is the key as is smart rehabilitation for the successful release of these animals back into the bush where they will in fact survive with the necessary skills. A bird's-eye view of a selection of the coolest projects of the Wikimedia Chapters in the past year. Be inspired by creativity and community work from all over the world, in order to transfer the enthusiasm and ideas to your communities back home. A 50 min presentation during which you will learn about more than 30-40 projects run by Wikimedia Chapters, followed by a vote on the coolest project and a 20 minutes panel - "How to run a cool project". Wikimedia Chapters run awesome projects and programmes, all year long. Most of which, you will never hear about. Just like in 2011 - 2016 we will give the Wikimaniacs an overview of the coolest of these projects. The overview includes topics like tips to be successful and things to better avoid, people and movement money involved, target groups or goals. Our goal is to inspire the audience: We hope that they learn from these projects, replicate or improve them and come up with their own ideas. This session should be a great start of the first day for every Wikimania (and has been for the past seven years). The Panel will dicuss how the cool projects can assist the movement and the local chapters in their outreach. Panel: Juliet Barbara, communication's Director of Wikimedia Foundation. The monthly Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meetings have taken place since October 2008 (originally called the "Report Card Meeting"). Usually they take place on the last Thursday of each month. The meetings have become increasingly open, with participation initially limited to on-site WMF staff, then expanded to remote staff and members of the internal-l mailing list. The meetings have been recorded on video since February 2012, and live streams and IRC participation are available since November 2012.
