Britain has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States. That's where he's wanted on 18 criminal charges, including spying. Washington says Assange endangered lives by releasing troves of classified military records and diplomatic correspondence. Assange called Friday's decision a "dark day for press freedom and British democracy." He will appeal the decision at London's High Court. Julian Assange, the man behind Wikileaks, says he’s the victim of a US conspiracy to punish him for exposing alleged US war crimes. Assange set up Wikileaks in 2006 to expose secrets that he, and others, thought should be exposed, including alleged US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the US says the leaks broke the law and endangered lives. Assange had sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid deportation. He remained there for nearly 7 years until he was ejected and arrested. A UK district judge blocked his extradition after his lawyer told the court that the risk of suicide would be "imminent the moment extradition becomes likely". An appeal is now going to the British High Court where they will decide if he should face extradition to the USA. Please subscribe HERE 🤍 #BBCNews
Julian Assange is Australia's most famous asylum seeker. The Wikileaks founder fled to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he's wanted for questioning over allegations of rape. He believes it's a ploy to have him sent to the U-S for trial over the publication of hundreds of thousands of top secret and highly embarrassing military and diplomatic documents. Assange invited Liz Hayes into his small world, where he talked about thoughts of escape, running for the Australian Senate and how long he can sustain his diplomatic stand-off WATCH more of 60 Minutes Australia: 🤍 LIKE 60 Minutes Australia on Facebook: 🤍 FOLLOW 60 Minutes Australia on Twitter: 🤍 FOLLOW 60 Minutes Australia on Instagram: 🤍 For forty years, 60 Minutes have been telling Australians the world’s greatest stories. The program also talks to Juan Mendez, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, about the treatment of Bradley Manning. Maybe zero accountability and a black budget wasn’t such a great idea after all... Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. 🤍 "WikiLeaks has published a new set of documents that shed light on the CIA’s hacking capabilities. Dubbed “Vault7,” the publication contains 8,761 documents and files purportedly taken from a secure network within the CIA’s headquarters at Langley, Virginia. The documents describe a number of remote exploits and hacking tools, similar to the NSA’s ANT catalog published by Der Spiegel in 2013. The files contain numerous exploits for both iOS and Android devices, dating from between 2014 and 2016. The agency seems to have had more success targeting Android devices, with roughly 24 weaponized exploits, compared to 14 for iOS. The exploits come from a variety of sources, including partner agencies like the NSA and GCHQ or private exploit traders. In one case, a published iOS 8 kernel attack is listed as an exploit, credited to security researcher Stefan Esser. Another of the published exploits — codenamed “Weeping Angel” — appears to target Samsung smart TVs, which drew criticism on release for their always-on voice command system. According to WikiLeaks, the exploit makes the television “operate as a bug, recording conversations in the room and sending them over the Internet to a covert CIA server.” The documents themselves paint a more ambiguous picture, with possible applications focusing on credential extraction rather than direct audio recording. Today’s release is one of the few WikiLeaks publications to include redactions, erasing the IP addresses and other identifying information of many devices targeted by the CIA. WikiLeaks has been criticized in the past for failing to redact sensitive information, including the medical files of rape victims. “While we are aware of the imperfect results of any approach chosen, we remain committed to our publishing model,” the post explains, “and note that the quantity of published pages in ‘Vault 7’ part one already eclipses the total number of pages published over the first three years of the Edward Snowden NSA leaks.””* Read more here: 🤍 Hosts: Cenk Uygur Cast: Cenk Uygur * The Largest Online News Show in the World. Julian Assange is one of the most influential figures to emerge this century. The Australian born founder of WikiLeaks has harnessed the technology of the digital age to unleash an information war against governments and corporations. WikiLeaks has collaborated with anonymous sources to release highly classified and often deeply embarrassing information to the world. The organisation exploded onto the world stage in 2010 when it began publishing a series of spectacular leaks laying bare the conduct of the United States. At the centre of it all was Julian Assange. The leaks sparked ferocious debate over the right to know and the right to keep secrets. Now Julian Assange is in the fight of his life. In April this year he was dragged, protesting, from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, nearly seven years after seeking diplomatic protection. He is facing extradition to the United States on espionage charges stemming from the spectacular 2010 leaks by Private Chelsea Manning. Everyone has an opinion about Julian Assange, but now you will hear from those who have been on the inside. Four Corners investigates the prosecution of Julian Assange in key interviews with those at the heart of WikiLeaks and those who have sought to bring him to US justice.
