I've been using Joplin to do my note taking for quite a while but recently I decided to give Vimwiki a bit of a shot and you know what that was such a good idea, so now I've been migrating all of my notes from joplin into vimwiki. This is a recording of my talk 'ViWrite: Writing, Editing, and World-Building at the speed of thought, presented on Oct 30, 2021 at the VimConf (🤍 I am primarily a novelist, and a hobbyist coder at best. Vim wasn't meant for writing and writers, but because Vim's innate power can be extended (often to ridiculous levels - yes, even in your browser - it is often used for documentation purposes by programmers. This got me thinking about adapting Vim as my *primary writing environment*. Eight months of experimenting and constant refining later, I can confidently say that Vim/NeoVim + git in a terminal is the writing environment I've dreamt about all my writing life. Special thanks the organizers of #VimConf2021, particularly ABD and Marcos for the tireless organization and constant updating of the site; The Primegan (🤍 for sharing his knowledge of Vim's ins and outs, and doing so with gusto and passion that it got me, a writer, interested enough to play around with Vim as a serious writing tool six months ago. TJDries (🤍 for Telescope (🤍 which is, in my mind, unintentionally the greatest writer assistant I have ever used, particularly when it comes to world-building. Huge shout out to Bram Moolenar (🤍 for giving us Vim, and tirelessly maintaining it for three decades (incidentally, Vim turned 30 on Nov 3rd 2021). The incredible eco-system around Vim, given life by truly genius makers of plugins, particularly Tim Pope and the makers of Vim-wiki (🤍 Neorg (thank you for bringing Org Mode into Vim because Org Mode is the only reason that made me contemplate emacs for a month or so). And the NeoVim (🤍 core team for reimagining Vim as more than a text editor. I am truly grateful to all of you for making the writing environment of my dreams. In this video, we look at folding text. Folding text is just a way of hiding text when you don't need to see it. To see which foldmethod is being used you can type :set foldmethod or the shortcut :set fdm We using the manual foldmethod on this video. In this video, I create a fold by selecting text using the upper case "V" to put us in visual line mode, using j or k, I select the text, then I create the fold by pressing lower case "z" then lower case "f". To open a fold you can type lower case "z" then lower case "o" You can close a fold by typing lower case "z" lower case "c" from any line in the folded text. The folds will need to be saved in the directory .vim/views, and that directory may need to be created. Placing these lines in your .vimrc file will save the folds in the .vim/views directory: autocmd BufWinLeave *.* mkview autocmd BufWinEnter *.* silent loadview Folds can be deleted pressing lower case "z" then lower case "d"
It is simply a test. I'm using tmux bindings to list the notes using fzf.
Best way to take notes when learning to code. ✨1.If you are learning from lectures online or tutorials, i still feel like traditional note taking helps, like ipad or even writing on piece of paper. in my case, i like to use notion + hand writing . ✨2.: If you are building a projects or take notes as you coding, using markdown is perfect. markdown is a light weighted markup language used in readmes. Easy to communicate to other coders. . ✨3: Github gist. it's use to store code blocks and looking into some open source notes from other coders as well. .
