All of us have seen a world map at some point in our lives before, but it is very difficult to imagine how certain countries and parts of the world compare to each other in size that are far apart. In this video, I explore why the world looks very different than how it is portrayed in the Mercator Projection map. I then go on to explore how certain countries are unexpectedly larger or smaller than what they appear to be, and how some places looks wildly different than our perceptions. PS; Don't totally hate on the Mercator Projection, it's actually a really useful map for navigation and on keeping the correct shape of countries while sacrificing the size that we can all laugh about! Making accurate world maps is mathematically impossible. Follow Johnny on Instagram 🤍instagram.com/johnny.harris/ Help us make more ambitious videos by joining the Vox Video Lab: 🤍 Maps are flat representations of our spherical planet. Johnny Harris cut open a plastic globe to understand just what it takes to turn a sphere into something flat. His struggle to make a flat map out of the plastic globe is indicative of a challenge mapmakers have faced for centuries: It is mathematically impossible to translate the surface of a sphere onto a plane without some form of distortion. To solve this problem, mathematicians and cartographers have developed a huge library of representations of the globe, each distorting a certain attribute and preserving others. For instance, the Mercator projection preserves the shape of countries while distorting the size, especially near the north and south pole. For a more accurate view of land area look at the Gall-Peters projection, which preserves area while distorting shape. In the end, there's not "right" map projection. Each comes with trade-offs, and cartographers make projection decisions based on the particular tasks at hand. But if you are interested in seeing an accurate depiction of the planet, it's best to stick with a globe. What if everybody in the world, all 7.4 billion of us all lived together in the same city? How big or small would this city have to be and how close together or far apart would we all be living from each other? The Mongol Empire at it's height took up 16% of all the land on Earth and controlled 1 out of every 4 people on the planet, a 13th century superpower. It's presence was very brief compared to other empires, but what if the Mongol Empire was suddenly recreated today with the same borders they had at their apex? This video attempts to answer that question using data analysis and statistics from readily available information and data. Music is The Wasteland by Ross Bugden. Here are 12 real life lore maps Subscribe to Talltanic 🤍 Watch our "Evidence That Aliens HAVE Visited Earth " video here:- 🤍 Watch our "CRAZY Ideas That Actually Worked!" video here- 🤍 Watch our UNBELIEVABLE Items Found After Tsunamis !" video here- 🤍 #6 The Fairy Tale Castle King Louis the Second of Bavaria was also known as Ludwig the Second. Along with having two names, he’s known for having built three royal castles. The most famous one is Neuschwanstein (noysh-VAN-sh’tine), located in the Bavarian Alps. And it was a royal undertaking. Consider that the castle started construction in 1869, but it was still unfinished when the king died in 1886. Experts say it provides an example of ‘castle romanticism’ which was a popular architectural fashion at the time. And with its towers, spires, and medieval appearance, this place looks like an example of the quintessential fairy tale castle as well. So it’s no wonder that it served as a major inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, and is now recognized as an iconic symbol of the media giant. #5 Canyon of the Crescent Moon You might recall that name from the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” released in 1989. In the franchise’s third installment, Indy and his dad were chasing down the holy grail which was stashed in an ancient temple in the desert. The entrance to that temple was provided by the ancient city of Petra, which existed a long time before the movies found it. Petra was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. It dates back to 321 BC when it was carved into the rocks of the Wadi Musa Canyon in Jordan. Petra was once a major trading hub that connected routes leading from China and India to Egypt and Rome. After the Arabs conquered the city in 663, it was later abandoned and forgotten by the western world. It wouldn't be rediscovered until the 19th century. That almost sounds like a real-life Indiana Jones adventure, doesn’t it? Thanks to its exposure in the movie, the number of tourists that visit Petra annually exploded from several thousand individuals to almost a million! #4 Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry According to a 2008 online survey, Harry Potter’s alma mater ranked 36th among Scotland’s best educational establishments. That’s pretty magical considering it’s a fictional school. But for many fans, it’s a real-life concern. And there are a couple of real-life locations in England that have represented Hogwarts onscreen. Alnwick Castle dates to the 11th century, and is the country’s second-largest inhabited castle (Windsor Castle is first). Durham Cathedral dates to the 7th century and is regarded as one of Europe’s finest examples of Norman architecture. Both locations provided exterior and interior shots. Both locations also received a lot more attention after the Harry Potter films were released. FYI, even muggles can find these places. #3 Hobbiton Where exactly is Middle-earth? We’ll leave it to the Tolkien (tole-KEEN) scholars to figure that one out. As far as the film versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit go, you can find Middle-earth in New Zealand. Matamata is a town and farming area located on the North Island. One of the farms served as the Hobbiton Movie Set for director Peter Jackson’s films. The on-location sets were so seamlessly integrated into the environment that the New Zealand government allowed them to remain there as tourist attractions. Guided tours of the 14-acre site (5.5 hectares) are conducted daily. Some of the highlights include 44 Hobbit holes, and a cafe that serves not only Breakfast but ‘Second Breakfast’ as well. #2 The Hallelujah Mountains In the movie “Avatar”, Pandora is an Earth-like moon located in the Alpha Centauri star system. You probably remember the amazing visuals with the Na’vi banshees soaring by the floating Hallelujah Mountains. That alien location was inspired by a terran location in a province of China called Mount Huang , or Huangshan. It’s part of a mountain range that covers more than 150 square kilometers (58 sq miles) and was formed more than 100 million years ago. The area is a major tourist attraction that offers the chance to experience the Hallelujah Mountains without having to wear 3D glasses 1...

The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most influential civilizations that ever existed. But what if somehow in today's current global age, the Empire was recreated to its exact ancient borders?
