Je recommande aux personnes qui souhaitent s’initier de consulter les ouvrages de Marie-Louise Von Franz J'ai fait des expériences qui sont pour ainsi dire «inexprimables», «secrètes», parce qu'on ne peut jamais les dire exactement et parce que personne ne peut les comprendre (je ne sais pas si je les ai moi-même comprises ne serait-ce qu'approximativement), «dangereuses» dans la mesure où 99 % des gens me jugeraient fou si j'allais raconter des choses pareilles, «catastrophiques» dans la mesure où l'idée a priori provoquée par la confidence interdirait aux autres l'accès à un secret à la fois vivant et merveilleux, «tabouisées», parce qu'il s'agit d'un domaine numineux protégé par la crainte de Dieu qui l'environne. I would open this description and elaboration of the piece with a definition of the word "Numinous," but there are SO MANY different definitions, if you really want to get in depth with it, do some research. Anway, I started writing this piece because one of my best friends wrote a little collection of poems for and about (a great gift kids, consider personalized stuff, always well received) me (and another mutual friend of ours, but details). She titled the little collection (you guessed it) "Numinous" and the definition SHE gave read, "Describing an experience that makes you fearful yet fascinated, awed yet attracted - the powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and inspired." and I may have started crying upon merely reading the title (God, there's a lot of parenthesis in this) BUT the point is, I knew I was gonna write a song about it. I tried for a really long time. Like a really long time. I had felt beyond ecstatic to be labeled something like 'Numinous'; I thought I could conquer the world when I read it! I wanted to capture that feeling and put it into music, but I really just couldn't. In hindsight, it's probably healthy that I couldn't see myself as 'numinous' and so I had to turn to alternative inspiration. What did I perceive as Numinous? The answer was ANOTHER best friend of mine: one who had been the bad influence in my life during high school and pulled me out of my shell and into the big wide world (hold onto to the bars inside the ride kids, we're about to get s e n t i m e n t a l). She'd taught me to have fun and even though we've grown only closer and closer over the years, I still don't feel cool enough to be her best friend. Once I knew what I was actually writing about, the piece practically wrote itself (a trending theme in my life). The entire ensemble I used was MASSIVE - I ended up using almost every orchestral patch up my sleeve (the church organ, sadly, did not make the cut) as well as a gigantic percussion ensemble, full tribal goodness. Other sounds that made their way into this bombastic, heroic romp include, but are not limited to: a gospel choir, a crazy amazing solo flute, a tribal African choir, a really cool instrument called a hang, an erhu, annnnd, my personal favorite, a kalimba. In conclusion, this is probably my best to date. It's a dense, hectic, bombastic, romp through heroism, friendship, and love. If this doesn't get you pump up, I don't know what will. Do yourself a favor - go for a drive and blast this. It feels amazing. Enjoy!
