Ma a Le Mans si combatte un’altra guerra: Ford e Ferrari. Non so se lo sapete, ma a Le Mans come in tante altre competizioni, ci sono le vetture ufficiali, gestite dalla casa costruttrice e le vetture private gestite dai team privati. Ecco, come ogni anno Tutti gli sguardi erano puntati su di loro: Le Ford Ufficiali e Le Ferrari Ufficiali. Ma quel giorno accadde qualcosa di incredibile. Prima le ford ufficiali, che erano in testa, furono colpite da dei guasti. Dopo poche ore la stessa sorte toccò alle Ferrari Ufficiali. E cosa succede quando le squadre ufficiali rompono? Le squadre private possono vincere. E questa fu una grande occasione per le squadre private che prendono il comando della gara. In prima posizione il francese Pierre Dumay, che ha iscritto personalmente la sua Ferrari che divide col belga Gustave Gosselin. In seconda posizione c’è un’altra ferrari privata: l’auto del nostro pilota fantasma: è la numero 21 del NART, il North American Racing Team guidata per l’appunto da Rindt e Gregory. Rindt e Gregory hanno già perso mezz’ora per un problema all’iniezione e cercano di rimontare. Il loro stint notturno è velocissimo e guadagnano tempo giro dopo giro. Ma, prima dell’alba cala la nebbia. Gregory fa fatica a guidare in quelle condizioni, porta degli occhiali così spessi che Carroll Shelby li paragona ai fondi delle bottiglie di Coca-Cola. Non ci vedeva una ceppa! Così si ferma al box stremato dai problemi di vista per farsi sostituire da Rindt. Solo che Rindt non si trova. Il suo compagno di squadra non c’è. Il team lo cerca ovunque, ma è sparito. Si dice che a Rindt importasse poco di quella gara, che fosse arrivato appena prima delle prove per dei problemi contrattuali, che volesse strapazzare la macchina fino a romperla, tirando come un disperato nei suoi turni di guida. Addirittura c’è chi dice che avesse prenotato una cena a Parigi il sabato sera, durante la gara! Che sia vero o siano solo dicerie non si sa...quello che si sa è che Rindt non c’è. Gregory non ce la fa. Ed è qui che entra in scena Ed Hugus, il nostro pilota fantasma. Cosa ci faceva Hugus a Le Mans? Hugus avrebbe dovuto partecipare anche lui alla 24h su una terza vettura del NART, che però non riuscirono a finire in tempo. Quindi venne iscritto come pilota di riserva della Ferrari numero 21 di Gregory e Rindt. Insomma, Gregory torna ai box distrutto. C’è la nebbia, non ci vede una sega, Rindt è sparito, così il team manager trova Hugus e gli dice: Hey...ce l’hai tuta e casco? Dai...vestiti, Sali tu in macchina e tienila fuori per un po’. Hugus sale a bordo e si fa subito notare. completa un buonissimo stint, gira molto forte e recupera terreno sui leader. Alla fine dello stint, torna ai box e riconsegna il volante ai titolari. Tutto normale, si direbbe. Non fosse che per i report ufficiali, Hugus non ha mai corso. Esatto, Ed Hugus quello stint notturno non l’hai mai fatto. Ma...cioè….in fin dei conti era la riserva...cos’ha fatto di sbagliato? Qui viene il bello: il regolamento prevede che la riserva possa sostituire il pilota titolare, MA se lo fa, l’altro non può più correre. Ufficialmente, Ed Hugus non è mai salito sulla Ferrari #21 nella notte di Le Mans. Sostanzialmente ha finto di essere Masten Gregory e tra le “tecnologie” dell’epoca, il buio, la stanchezza e forse qualche bicchiere di vino di troppo, nessuno si è accorto di nulla. L’uomo della nebbia ha fatto il suo dovere, di nascosto, nel silenzio più totale, prima di accomodarsi ai margini della storia. La gara poi prosegue. Al mattino l’auto che era in testa fora una gomma e cede la prima posizione alla NART di Gregory e Rindt. Taglieranno il traguardo da eroi, perché nonostante seri problemi alla trasmissione e al differenziale e con la frizione quasi sbriciolata, la Ferrari numero 21 trionfa a Le Mans. Un team privato batte i colossi ufficiali Ford e Ferrari, tra l’altro con una macchina meno performante, la 250 LM. E come detto all’inizio, quella fu l’ultima vittoria di una Ferrari alla 24 Ore. Pare che in alcune immagini dell’epoca si veda Hugus accompagnare Rindt e Gregory verso il podio, guidando lui la macchina. Ma per quarant’anni non si saprà nulla sul Caso Hugus. Ufficialmente, quella Le Mans la vinsero Gregory e Rindt.
