The Ojibwe name for the lake is gichi-gami (pronounced as gitchi-gami and kitchi-gami in other dialects),[7] meaning "great sea." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the name as "Gitche Gumee" in The Song of Hiawatha, as did Gordon Lightfoot in his song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". According to other sources, the actual Ojibwe name is Ojibwe Gichigami ("Ojibwe's Great Sea") or Anishinaabe Gichigami ("Anishinaabe's Great Sea").[8] The 1878 dictionary by Father Frederic Baraga, the first one written for the Ojibway language, gives the Ojibwe name as Otchipwe-kitchi-gami (reflecting Ojibwe Gichigami).[7] The first French explorers approaching the great inland sea by way of the Ottawa River and Lake Huron during the 17th century referred to their discovery as le lac supérieur. Properly translated, the expression means "Upper Lake," that is, the lake above Lake Huron. Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake and very much an inland sea. This powerful body of water is larger than the country of Austria and directly influences the climate of its surrounding landmass. Fog can envelop her shoreline for days on end and wicked storms can whip up waves over 10m in height, taking with them many a ship. In the summer of 2018, Leah and I spent an amazing 10 days canoeing the most remote coast in the Great Lakes - 220km of undeveloped, wilderness shoreline. We were moved by the lakes' rugged coastal mountains, boreal 'rainforests' and endless sandy beaches. Split Rock, The Superior Light relates the saga of the most visited and most photographed lighthouse on the Great Lakes. From the challenges of construction to the isolated life of the early keepers, Split Rock's story fascinates and delights. With the construction of Highway 61 along the Minnesota North Shore of Lake Superior, the keepers' duties expanded from tending the light station to becoming tour guides for thousands of eager tourists. Today, forty-plus years after decommissioning by the Coast Guard, Split Rock has become one of the most-visited historic sites in Minnesota. 2010 marks the centennial celebration of this landmark on Lake Superior.
Through large waves, gale force winds and heavy snow, our goal on this trip was to fish from shore on Lake Superior. Hidden in plain sight within Lake Superior is a massive 19 mile wide impact crater. This feature is known as the Slate Islands Crater, and formed as part of an Earth wide cataclysm referred to as the "Ordovician meteor event". This video will discuss the 31 kilometer wide impact crater in one of the Great Lakes, and mention what caused the Ordovician meteor event. In today's vlog we continue south towards home, from Marathon to Sault Ste Marie, all along the Lake Superior shore in Northern Ontario. We stopped in towns like White River and Wawa to see little attractions like the Winnie the Pooh and Goose monuments! North America has a lot of lakes that are pretty great, including the Great Salt lake, the Great Slave Lake, and the Great Bear Lake. But North America’s greatest lakes are the North American Great Lakes, often just called the Great Lakes if you’re confident you won’t confuse them with the African Great Lakes. The Great Lakes with the greatest area are Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. But these aren’t the only significant lakes in the Great Lakes watershed, the area of land that drains into the major Great Lakes, and those additional lakes are also pretty great. Let’s Explore!
