Jenny Saville is a hugely successful international artist best known for her monumental depictions of the naked female form. Saville draws upon a wide range of sources in her work, including medical and forensic textbooks, children's drawings, graffiti and online images, as well as celebrated paintings and drawings of the past. In more recent years, Saville has created works in which she layers images, often drawing on several different sources. Working between the figurative and abstract, she has chosen to use charcoal and pastel in many of these works, attracted by the transparency they offer. These materials allow Saville to work organically, layering and erasing her media to blend and merge bodily forms and abstract gestures. Among Saville's inspiration include key figures from 20th-century art history such as Williem De Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Cy Twombly, as well as old masters such as Titian, Tintoretto, and Velazquez. In this video, Saville discusses her process, subjects, inspiration, and exhibiting at the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. Jenny Saville celebrates her exhibition "Elpis" at Gagosian New York with painter Nathaniel Mary Quinn and historian Simon Schama, with a performance by the Aaron Diehl Trio, who will play music by Philip Glass as well as a new composition inspired by the work on view. In her new series of monumental portraits, Saville explores the human face and body, producing bold and sensuous impressions of surface, line, and mass. Painting from photographs, she magnifies individual features, employing expressive brushstrokes to create dramatic juxtapositions of color and light that recall Byzantine icons and mosaics. Titled after the ancient Greek personification of hope left behind in Pandora’s box, the paintings in "Elpis" are grounded in tangible reality while reaching toward myth. In this episode, Quinn takes viewers on a walkthrough of Saville’s exhibition, sharing his enthusiasm for the craft of painting and the power of the artist’s vision. Jenny Saville in conversation with Skarlet Smatana, director of the George Economou Collection, Athens, Greece. This program was recorded on November 9, 2022, at 4 pm ET. About Jenny Saville Born in 1970 in Cambridge, England, Saville is a contemporary British artist known for her large-scale painted depictions of nude women. She partially credits her interest in big bodies to Pablo Picasso and his sense of permanence. She became interested in the imperfections of the flesh, with all its societal implications and taboos, and has been captivated with these details since she was young. While on a fellowship in Connecticut in 1994, Saville observed a New York City plastic surgeon at work. Studying the reconstruction of human flesh was formative in her perception of the body—its resilience, as well as its fragility. She explored medical pathologies; viewed cadavers; examined animals and meat; studied classical and Renaissance sculpture; and observed intertwined couples, mothers with their children, and individuals whose bodies challenge gender dichotomies. Saville is an original member of the Young British Artists, the group of painters and sculptors who came to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She reinvigorated contemporary figurative painting by challenging the limits of the genre and raising questions about society’s perception of the body and its potential. Her work reveals a deep awareness, both intellectual and sensory, of how the body has been represented over time and across cultures. Saville’s work was included in the Fiftieth Venice Biennale in 2003 and she has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Gagosian, New York; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Rome; Kunsthaus, Zürich; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. She received a BA from Glasgow School of Art in 1992 and spent a term at the University of Cincinnati in 1991, where she enrolled in a course in women’s studies. From 2000 to 2006, she was a lecturer at the Slade School of Fine Arts, London. Saville lives and works in Oxford, England. About Skarlet Smatana Smatana is director of the George Economou Collection in Athens. Since taking the position in 2012, she has honed its objectives and led its exhibition program, contextualizing it within twentieth-century art-historical and contemporary discourse. She often collaborates with major public institutions and private foundations to promote publicly exhibited collections and philanthropic and lending initiatives to support contemporary artists. She has organized solo exhibitions of artists including Saville, Jeff Wall, Charles Ray, David Hammons, and Rashid Johnson, as well as a two-person show of Georg Baselitz and Paul McCarthy. Before joining the George Economou Collection, Smatana worked at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; Pace Gallery, New York; Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago; and as director at L&M Arts, New York. She has an MA in art history, theory, and criticism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, focusing on postwar and contemporary art with a specialization in German art. In 2021, Batia Ofer flew to Florence, Italy to interview Jenny Saville about her practice and the piece, 'Exodus' she donated for auction at the Art of Wishes Gala in 2021. Saville is a world-renowned artist, and one of many who have donated work to Art of Wishes over the past five years. Art of Wishes is a charitable initiative that raises money for Make-A-Wish UK, the charity which grants wishes to children living with critical illnesses. Since its founding in 2017, Art of Wishes has raised over £9 million, making 3,000 children's dreams come true. Saville, born in Cambridge in 1970, was a prominent member of the YBAs and her depictions of the human form transcend the boundaries of both classical figuration and modern abstraction. Oil paint, applied in heavy layers, becomes as visceral as flesh itself, each painted mark maintaining a supple, mobile life of its own. As Saville pushes, smears, and scrapes the pigment over her large-scale canvases, the distinctions between living, breathing bodies and their painted representations begin to collapse. Though forward-looking, her work reveals a deep awareness, both intellectual and sensory, of how the body has been represented over time and across cultures—from antique and Hindu sculpture, to Renaissance drawing and painting, to the work of modern artists such as Henri Matisse, Willem de Kooning, and Pablo Picasso. In the striking faces, jumbled limbs, and tumbling folds of her paintings, one may perceive echoes of Titian’s Venus of Urbino (c. 1532), Rubens’s Christ in the Descent from the Cross (1612–14), Manet’s Olympia (1863), and faces and bodies culled from magazines and tabloid newspapers. Saville’s paintings refuse to fit smoothly into an historical arc; instead, each body comes forward, autonomous, voluminous, and always refusing to hide. “Situational: The Body in Contemporary Painting” On February 9, 2019, SFAI's Painting Department hosted renowned British artist Jenny Saville in conversation with Claudia Schmuckli, Curator-in-Charge of Contemporary Art and Programming at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Known for her monumental paintings of flesh from a feminist perspective, Saville has continually redefined the body politic in painting for the past 25 years. In addition, panel discussions will be delivered on a range of subjects by artists and professors in art practice and history, submitting their distinct perceptions about the dynamic state of figurative painting. Additional Resources Classical artist Jenny Savile won the admiration of art critics when she participated with other young British artists from the Charles Saatchi Collection in the 1997 exhibition Sensation at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. She is known primarily for her figurative painting and classic drawings of large-scale obese nude women of extreme physicality. Although she made important contributions to modern art, her style of painting (composition, brushwork and sense of color) has been compared to that of Peter Paul Rubens and the contemporary Anglo-Austrian Lucian Freud. Syrian artist Sara Shamma invites us into her London studio to talk about her creative process, recent upheaval, and why she likes to see in double. The sun is very sharp here,’ observes Sara Shamma. ‘The way it hits your eyes is unexpected and transforms the way I see things.’ In our short film, the Syrian artist is standing in her light-filled studio in Dulwich and reflecting on how her paintings have changed since moving to South London three years ago. ‘I’ve started using blue and green in a big way – cool colours – less of the warm reds and browns that perhaps came from my country.’ In 2012, a year after the civil war began, Shamma and her young family left Damascus for Lebanon. ‘It was a difficult time,’ she says with characteristic understatement –particularly as her husband, who was CEO of a big logistics company stayed behind in Syria, intrepidly crossing the border each weekend to visit them. She put her dislocation and fear into her paintings, creating the monumental work Q, an extraordinary frieze of distended and deformed people, animals and birds waiting in line. This collaborative project invited students from the BA (Hons) Dance at Performing Arts Studio Scotland, Edinburgh College and MFA Performance Costume at Edinburgh College of Art, to create a performance with custom-designed costume, inspired by the work of artist Jenny Saville. During a two-day workshop, students were introduced to a design thinking model to facilitate radical collaboration. Dance students created a movement piece in response to areas of interest they shared with their design partner, while designers designed prototypes around the movement, using basic fabrics. The performance at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art drew all of this work together into an innovative performance which responded to the methods, themes and ideas explored in NOW. Featuring the work of dancer and designer pairs: Jace Mercy and Sarah McClintock; Jessica Duncan and Carmella Dalton; Katie Kerr and Chloe Lamden; Robyn Gracie and Becky Hollis; Johanna Padrón and Paraskevi (Friday) Koumpeti.
