Living in Japan and working in a Tokyo office - This is a Tokyo day in the life of a Japanese Office Worker, 24 year old, Emi. This is also a tour of her Japanese office, Pasona. We start this typical day in her Japanese home, commute via train to her Tokyo office in Otemachi and spend a day in the life of Emi at her working place. We see her typical working hours in Japan and how it is working in Japan as a female in her position. Her day in the life in Japan may be a bit different than some Japanese salarymen, but her experiences in the office with chorei, senpai / kouhai, and kenshu is a very typical in experiences in many Japanese offices. If you want to know how work in Japan or want to know how work in Tokyo, this could be how your job in Japan could be like. The Tokyo office itself, is probably an above average Japanese office in terms design and the business culture a bit more progressive than most traditional Japanese companies, but this Japanese company still maintains a very traditional Japanese office environment. So all in all, this is an example of Japan life as well as Tokyo life if you were to work in a Japanese company. You should always be aware of Japanese culture when working in a Japanese office. This Japanese office has a gym, English school and even a farm all in the building. Pasona is one of the largest staffing services company in Japan. There’s about 4000 staff in her office alone and about 9000 in total worldwide. Japanese work day at a Japanese office for an average Japanese salaryman in a Tokyo office. Living in Japan and working in Japan is quite a unique experience. This is a day in the life of Japanese worker, Makoto, 27 years old who lives in a Tokyo 3-story house with his family. This Tokyo salaryman works in a small Tokyo office, but spends many of his Japan working hours traveling from client to client on the Tokyo trains. Makoto works for a company called Mobal and as many Japanese salarymen, he entered the company straight from a Japanese University and he plans to spend his entire salaryman career at the same company. That is the life in Japan for a salaryman. We take a look inside what it's like to work in a small Tokyo office as well as to visit clients throughout Tokyo city area. His job experiences maybe unique to his company, but fundamentally he is very much an average salaryman. He commutes by train everyday to get to work and has to ride his mama-chari bike to get to the train station from his home. This Tokyo salaryman life has him arriving to work early and working late. As a salaryman, Makoto receives a standard salary every month for all the long work hours. The Japanese office is also configured so his boss' desk is right in front of him, quite a Japanese style office working environment. This very average Japanese work day and work lifestyle showcases a true day in Japan work life. A day in the life working in Tokyo Japan as a Delivery Worker at Sagawa Express, one of the largest transportation companies in Japan. This is what a typical day working in Japan is like if you worked for a large shipping company as a Japanese delivery man or delivery women in Tokyo. Japan work life and Japan work culture can be seen throughout the video from morning until evening. Yasuho, who is 22 years old, recently started working in a Japanese company Sagawa and we follow her through her average working day in Tokyo Japan. These are her typical working hours in Japan. She loves working in Japan and for her Japanese company as a Japanese delivery worker. Japanese delivery women work the same as the delivery men in Japan and there doesn't seem to be much of difference in work responsibilities. In fact, this is a peek into Japan life and Tokyo life that is rare to see, but Yasuho has been kind enough to let us follow her for the day. You'll find that Japaense delivery workers in Tokyo do a lot of walking since businesses are quite close to each other so it doesn't make sense to drive around in a delivery truck all day when compared to other countries. I hope you enjoy this video about delivery workers in Japan, life in Toyo and how it might be like working for a Japanese company such as Sagawa Express. This is a Day in the Life of a Japanese All Night Izakaya Drinking Restaurant Worker in Tokyo Japan. In Japan she is called an Okami, the head lady in charge of the restaurant, in this case a Japanese Izakaya. This is the typical day of a Japanese night worker or a Japanese person who works all night at an all-night restaurant in Tokyo. She works at Ginza Karin, an all-night Izakaya restaurant that offers traditional home-style Japanese cuisine with a wide selection of alcohol in one the most opulent areas of Tokyo, Ginza. She built this shop from nothing and now she’s serves as the Okami. The early-shift workers start the prep beforehand, just in time so she can check the dishes when she arrives, ensuring that each dish created meet the high quality standards she’s put in place. Her restaurant is located in the heart of the Ginza 7 chome / 8 chome district, renowned for its abundance of Japanese hostess clubs, with many of the hostesses in the area either wearing dresses or Kimonos just like Yuka. The Izakaya serves Obanzai, which are everyday Japanese side dishes made with seasonal ingredients, originating from traditional Kyoto-style home cooking. The dishes are usually served in large bowls lined up on the shop’s countertop for customers to able to see and choose. We follow her from her morning routine all the way until the end of her work night. This look in Japanese work culture and what they may eat during the day. A day in the life of a Japanese construction worker building a house in Japan. Constructing Japanese homes in Tokyo can be a complicated process, so it's common for Japanese living in Tokyo and Japanese living in Japan to ask a professional home building company like like Daiwa House to help manage and construct their home. We follow Yuya from morning until evening and throughout his workday to show the Japanese working culture and construction culture in Japan. Construction workers in Japan have their own unique routines and process when building a house in Japan and this a peek into their daily lives in Tokyo. Japan is also ranked 4th in the world for having earthquakes so earthquake resistant building construction laws have been in place since 1924 and have been updated over the years, such as the shin-taishin standard, requiring that all buildings must be able to withstand a stage 6 seismic event on Japan’s 7-stage seismic scale. Yuya is a Ni-Kyu Kenchikushi, a prefecture license certified second-class architect which allows him to manage small housing construction. A first class license would allow for larger construction projects such as olympic stadiums but would require passing a national qualifying exam available to four year university graduates with a minimum 2 years of practical building related experience, where only about 10% of the applicants are able to pass. Yuya has been working with the company for about 3 years now and his entire first year was spent training with 1000 other new grad employees who were all hired at the same time, in Japanese called Shinsotsu Saiyo. (新卒採用). In Japan, it’s typical for large companies to hire new grads in a batch usually in April to align with Japan’s standardized school schedule. Living in Japan and working in a traditional Japanese office environment. This is a Toyota day in the life of a Japanese Auto Repair Shop worker, 30 year old, Erina. This is also a Japanese office tour inside of a Japanese auto repair shop in Toyota. We start this very typical day in her Japanese home, commute via Toyota car to her Toyota car repair shop. This is a day in the life of Erina and we get to see her with co-workers and Japanese mechanics in how they work in Japan. This is a peak into Japanese work culture as well as the work culture in Japan. We see her typical working hours in Japan and how it is working in Japan as a female in her position also known as a Japanese office lady, Japanese OL or Japanese salary woman. Her day in the life in Japan may be a bit different than some Japanese salarymen, but her experiences in the office and auto repair shop is quite common for Japanese employees in her position. The Japanese auto repair shop is also pretty common in terms of work-life. If anythings, the car repair shop is a very traditional office in Japan with Rajio Taiso, cleaning and work ethic. So all in all, this is an example of Japan life as well as Japan countryside life if you were to work in a traditional Japanese company. A day in the life working in Tokyo Japan as a Pachinko Casino Worker. This is what a typical day working in Japan is like if you work in the Casino Entertainment and leisure Industry. This is typical life living in Tokyo and working a morning shift. The Japan working culture is shown as we follow Kento, 27 year old Pachinko Parlor Hall Manager from morning until evening to see what his average Japanese job is like. Pachinko Hall manager works at Maruhan, one of the largest Pachinko companies in Japan. Pachinko is a type of mechanical ball game resembling pinball, but instead with many tiny balls and with the aim to drop the balls into specific pockets in the machine. If one of the balls, goes into the designated pocket, called STATO CHAKKA, it will initiate a slot machine like roll on the LCD screen. If the numbers or patterns line up, then it’s a jackpot. The winnings can be used to claim various prizes at the front desk, but cannot be claimed for cash directly since gambling is prohibited by Japanese law. Instead, the winnings can be exchanged into gold chips. Then outside at a neighboring TUC shop, the gold chips can be exchanged for cash. NOTE: I hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy during these times. This video was filmed before Tokyo started recommending a city lockdown. In fact, at the time of uploading this video, Tokyo is still not officially on lockdown and residents are able to go out as they wish, but please know that I am staying at home these days as much as possible, eating meals at home and only venturing out for necessary items such as pregnancy clinic visits, grocery shopping, etc and also practicing social distancing as much as it is possible in Tokyo. A day in the life of a Japanese Carpenter. This is the typical life of a Japanese worker in the Japan construction industry. In Japan, a carpenter is known as Daiku. We follow the life of carpenter in Japan from morning until evening including everything that happens in between. This is the typical work day for a Japanese carpenter. Eri who recently started her own carpentry company mainly renovates stores and houses. In Japan these days, the number of carpenters have significantly decreased by 1/2 compared to 20 years ago, and currently 40% of all carpenters are over the age of 60. It’s become a serious concern in Japan, but Eri, unlike the younger generation avoiding the industry, wants to help spread her joy of carpentry to those around her. A Day in the life of a Japanese Hotel Worker in Tokyo. This is working life in Japan if you were to work in the hotel industry. In Japan, there’s a unique hospitality custom called OMOTENASHI. Directly translated, Omote meaning public face and nashi meaning nothing, combined it means services are always completely genuine and honest. Because it’s so deeply rooted in Japanese culture, the staff make extra efforts to provide guests with the best experience possible without expecting anything in return. We follow Yohei's work day in Tokyo from morning until evening .Yohei works as the assistant manager at APA hotel Shinjuku Gyoenmae. APA is one of the largest hotel chains in japan. APA hotel uniquely identify as a New Urban style hotel high Quality, High Functionally without all the unnecessary services providing all guests with a good night’s sleep, often mistaken as a Japanese business hotel, which are typically budget style hotels close to the train station, originally intended for Japanese salarymen traveling between cities for business. Often the rooms are smaller with bare amenities, single bed, desk, tv, refrigerator, unit bath and toilet. In Japan, tipping is not customary and in some ways can be awkward as it’s unexpected. It’s ingrained in Japanese culture to take pride in your work no matter at what level, so receiving a tip as an incentive to delivery the best service is viewed as unnecessary, all tying back to Omotenashi. I've never worked in Japan. I mean I work in Japan, but I work from my home and have never needed Japanese language or workplace skills. But I do know people who have, so I set up interviews with 8 of them to see what their experiences were like. All of them worked in the "real" Japanese workplace, from small, modern companies to big traditional ones. Or in other words, they worked jobs that didn't involve teaching English. They needed to be proficient in the Japanese language and business culture. All the interviewees speak English, have lived outside of Japan for some period of time, and have university degrees. So these are not your typical Japanese workers, let's just be ultra clear on that. But I think they do help give insight into what it's like working in Japan and how it compares to working in a global or Western workplace. This is the short version of the interviews. For the hour long version please check it out at 🤍 CORRECTION: It's illegal to not pay overtime, even for full-time employees. There can be some exceptions for management. So I was wrong in saying that full-time employees don't typically get paid overtime. Sorry for the screw up. A day in the life of a Japanese waitress in Tokyo working at a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant. This is a typical work day for a waitress in the Japanese food industry and the typical working hours in Japan. This is a look inside of Japanese work culture in Japanese restaurants. Working in Japan is quite unique and depending on the industry may be a bit different from job to job, but many of the jobs also share similar characteristics. The video follows Yuki in her typical japan work day from morning until the evening and everything that happens in between at work. She arrives at the teppanyaki restaurant when it opens and leaves when it closes, very typical for Japanese restaurants. Yuki is a waitress at Pandora, a Teppanyaki restaurant, Japanese style flat grill, which has been a local favorite since 1972 serving Kobe beef steaks and teppanyaki course meals. During her time working as a full-time waitress, she learned the importance of reading and anticipating the customers needs and acting beforehand. It’s a strong part of a Japanese omotenashi culture, a deep and honest form of hospitality, treating customers with respect without asking for anything in return. So for her, even a smile from her customers brings her true joy. One of the main reasons why in Japan tips at the end of the meal are very uncustomary. This among other things shared in this video is what makes working in Japan as a waitress very unique experience. We go inside their workplace to see Japanese work culture as they all work as a team to run the train line together in the small tranquil town of Choshi in Japan. Takaiya works as a train conductor at Choshi Den-tetsu, AKA Choshi Electric Railway, transporting passengers for 100 years now from Choshi station to Tokawa station, a 10 station 6.4km (4 Mile) stretch located on the easternmost tip of Chiba right on the oceanside. The headquarters is here, at Nakanocho station, where a total of 60 workers proudly and safely keep the train line running each and every day. A day in the life of a Japanese working mother of 2 children living in Tokyo Japan. This is the life of a Typical Japanese family living in Tokyo Japan with both parents working. Hifumi, 27 years old, works in Tokyo and runs her own churro shop while taking care of her 2 Japanese kids. The 2 Tokyo kids usually go to the nursery around 8:30 on weekdays so mornings are usually chaotic on top of her regular work schedule which starts shortly after she drops them off and continues until the afternoon, then she has to juggle the 2 kids schedules picking them up at separate times usually between 3-4 to also shuttle them separately to one of their many extracurricular activities and to finally bring them home just in time for dinner, but since today is a weekend there’s a slower pace to things, nonetheless Hifumi still has to balance some of her work today, while also taking care of her kids. She actually took several years off of work after giving birth, as she struggled mentally to take care of them on her own, while her husband worked to support the family financially. In Japan, it’s common enough for women to completely handle the child rearing responsibilities, that the term, one ope was coined, meaning one parent operation. But ultimately she decided being a Japanese housewife wasn’t for her and eagerly took a production job and eventually started her own business. Being a working mom in Japan isn’t easy, but she definitely prefers being a business owner compared to working at job for some else like when she worked in production. Now, she’s able to better manage and dictate her schedule so she can be flexible for her kids activities. Today, we'll see how this working Japanese mother manages her time between work, home and kids. Why Japanese Hate Working with Foreigners

Get 10% off with my link on Squarespace - 🤍 This is why Japanese don’t like working with Foreigners. Let me explain, many foreigners misunderstand Japanese work culture and Japanese business culture. Even some that have experienced it firsthand, still don’t get it. There’s more to it, than just saying Japan is super strict or Japanese work long hours. There’s a lot of Japanese unwritten and hidden cultural rules that form the foundation of Japanese work culture and expectations. Many foreigners who don’t understand this, end up hating their job in Japan or just as bad, their coworkers hate working with them. So in this video, I'm gonna share with you what Japanese really think you shouldn’t be doing at work and why they think this, as they'll probably never tell it to your face. See, all these things are common sense in Japan, taught to them as kids, basic cultural manners, etiquette and work ethic. And if they were to tell you, it would just be rude. That said, these points are based on typical Japanese work environments, not all Japanese people and companies are like this. Some are more westernized while others, believe it not, are even more strict. If you’re planning to work in Japan though, it’s a good start to not expect the same work culture as your home country. I hope this videos help people understand what they may expect if they plan on working in Japan. A day in the life at a Japanese Bakery in Tokyo Japan. This is the working life of a typical Japanese baker and their Japan work culture. We follow the Japan baker during their work hours as well as the morning routine and after work life. Japanese bakeries are known for their unique variety of bread products quite different to their western counterparts, with items such as melon pan, an pan and all kinds of sozai breads. And although rice is a Japanese staple, bread gained in popularity during the meiji period, and in less than 2 centuries, it’s become even more popular than rice. Soft Japanese bread with all sorts of cream and curry fillings, mentaiko and yakisoba toppings is all perfectly suited for the local taste. In Japan, food safety is paramount to showcasing and serving delectable breads. And with Japanese customers equally conscious about cleanliness, it's almost culturally mandatory for breads to be individually wrapped assuring customers that each piece of bread has been properly handled and no else has touched it. Shokupan is a Japanese milk bread, popular for its milky-sweet taste, undeniable moistness and pillowy cottoncandy like softness often served as breakfast toast or sandwich bread. Different than traditional white bread, it has a richer flavorful experience. The Yudane baking method which originated in Japan is used here. Instead of being cooked, the flour is mixed with boiled water then left to cool down before use, which gelatinizes the starch in the flour resulting in a more tender bread which stays softer for longer. Day in the Life of a Japanese Game Designer

A Day in the Life of a Japanese Game Designer also know in Japan as a Game Planner for a Japanese Development Company. This is life working in Tokyo in the Japan Game Industry developing games for mobile devices. It includes the average work day and typical working hours of a Japanese office. If you want to learn what it is like working in the Japan game industry then this video should help provide insight on the type of work life and work culture in Japan. Shuta works as a Lead Game Designer aka Game Planner at Colopl. One of the largest mobile game developers in Japan popular for making casual mobile games like Shironkeo Project, Meow Meow and Star Acres. With about 800 employees in their Tokyo office, their creative teams produce a wide variety of mobile games. As a Japanese game planner, it’s important to have strong management and communication skills. It’s not enough to be creative and come up with ideas, but a planner must also be able to organize these ideas, create proposals and specification documents in order to effectively communicate their ideas to their teams. Apparently, it took a total of 7 years of development to complete the game Neko Golf. In fact, the development itself froze after 4 years, but then was later restarted and the team restructured when Shuta joined the team 3 years ago. For many playing the game, they’ll probably never truly understand how much time went into creating it, but for the team I’m sure there’s a great sense of completing the game. A day in the life of a Japanese Natto Fermented Soybeans Maker in Tokyo Japan. This is what a typical day working in a Japan shop and Japanese kitchen is like for a Japanese worker in this field. Japanese work culture can not only be viewed in large Japanese companies, but also smaller Japanese business with a few staff. This Day in the Life features a Japanese natto shop called Amakusa Natto, a specialized natto store established in 2019 and how to make natto, fermented soybeans. They craft a premium high-quality natto all 100%....by hand. A relatively young company with, with only a few staff, producing some of the best handmade natto possible. Natto, aka fermented soybeans, is probably most known worldwide for its powerful smell, distinctive flavor, and gooey texture but the shop uniquely crafts their natto with less smell and gooeyness making it more palatable for customers while still maintaining its super food and extremely nutritious qualities. Regardless, 85% of the Japanese population have come to enjoy natto’s ultra unique taste and texture. Interestingly though, many may think that rice is the go-to breakfast carb choice for Japanese, but when questioned, 56% of Japanese today answered that they tend to choose bread over rice. Given the typical work day in Japan, it seems only natural for people who are in a morning rush to save time on preparing a bowl of rice. In fact, soybeans are one of the most important ingredients in Japanese cuisine, as 3.5 Million tons of soybeans are used every year and it can be found in the most common Japanese ingredients such as Tofu, soy sauce, miso, kinako powder and of course natto, included everyday in Japanese meals anytime of the day. A Day in the Life of a Japanese Wagyu Butcher Shop Owner in Tokyo. This Japanese Butcher living in Tokyo Japan offers premium A5 Japanese wagyu beef, Japanese pork, Japanese chicken and various curated meats. This is an average day living in Tokyo as well as average day working in tokyo as a meat butcher. You'll get a glimpse into Japan work culture for this field. Teru, 44 years old, runs a local Japanese meat butcher shop in Tokyo, Yanagiya, which has been in his family for 73 years. It’s named after his family, Yanagi. Yanagiya only sells A5 Sendai Gyu Beef, which is famous for having a strict grading criteria for it’s meat, as only 30 % of the cows in Miyagi prefecture are good enough to be certified with premium A5 medal. All Japanese beef is considered wagyu beef, but not all Wagyu beef is A5 grade. A5 wagyu beef is the highest quality of meat you can get in Japan based on it’s beef grading system. Basically, you have Yield Grade and a Quality Grade, hence A AND 5. The Yield Grade, is the amount of meat you can get from the cow, and is graded either A, B or C, A being the highest mark. While the Quality grade, depends on 4 categories, marbling, color & brightness, firmness and texture, and finally color, luster and quality of fat. Each is graded from 1 being poor all the way to 5 excellent. In order to achieve an overall 5 grade, the meat must receive a 5 in every category. So Receiving all 5’s but 1 4 in a category, won’t cut and it’d result in an overall grade of 4. If you look closely at the Wagyu beef, you can see what the Japanese call Sashi, or in English the marbling or thin stips of fat in the beef. Without this excellent marbling, the meat wouldn’t be considered grade 5 quality. His main duty is the manager of the ramen shop, but he also creates new gentei limited time menu items as a Japanese ramen chef. Life in Tokyo is amazing and part of this is because we have dedicated workers in Japan that keep the city running. To be a Japanese chef you must really have a passion for what you do. If you are ever looking for a spicy food challenge or spicy ramen challenge in Tokyo, then the Kikanbo ramen shop should be you first destination. But don't worry, if you can't eat spicy ramen, the ramen shop also prepares non-spicy version of the ramen bowl. Today, I’ve got special access to visit the Musashino City School Lunch & Dietary Education Promotion Foundation servicing 18 schools in total with 181 hard working staff, I’m going inside to one of their massive Japanese Japanese school food kitchens, so large in scale I want to call it a food factory to better capture its size. It’s so massive that it produces food for 8 different schools each and every day. Mornings start at 7:30 AM, as the food must be prepared, cooked and then shipped out all before lunch time, ready to eat for a total of 2700 students. And this entire food education system is supported by the Japanese government, meaning that on average, the monthly school lunch fee paid by parents at public schools is about 4,300 yen at elementary schools and 4,900 yen at junior high schools, about 33-38 USD dollars a month. Use my code PAOLO to get $15 off your first Bokksu Japanese snack box! 🤍 We're going behind the counter at a local family-owned Japanese chicken speciality shop in Tokyo Japan. This is tour from inside of their kitchen from their morning open time of 5:00AM. This Tokyo hidden gem chicken shop receives farm fresh chicken deliveries daily, refrigerating them overnight to bring out the natural umami from their bones, and finally dressing them first thing the next morning, which produces an unmatched level of freshness and flavor when compared to machine processed chickens sold at the supermarket. This hidden Japanese chicken in Gotanda, is known for its umami-rich, juicy and tender meat selectively sourcing domestic free-range chickens called daisen-dori and shingen-dori from Totori and Yamanashi prefectures, which has remained unchanged since the shop was first opened. It’s one of the reasons why many of it’s customers often say, they won’t shop anywhere else. It's also perfect to get some Tokyo Street Food or Japanese Street Food if you are in the neighborhood. Shinanoya, opened in 1949 going back 3 generations and located just a 3 minute walk from Gotanda station. They uniquely dress their chickens from the start of each morning to deliver the freshest chicken meat and dishes to their customers as possible. One of my favorites is the Karaage Fried Chicken but they server all sorts of Japanese sozai dishes such as yakitori, korroke and chicken menchi.
