In this video, I take a look at an early version of an interesting development - GPU Audio, which promises the ability to harness the huge processing potential of a GPU for audio processing from within any application that uses VST plugins. It's very early days for this software, but it has some promising signs. I look at the plugin which is currently availble - an impulse response reverb - and compare it to a native plugin with the same IR, on my DAW. 🤍GPUAudio has released the first Apple Silicon early access AudioUnit and VST plugins. 20 instances of FIR Convolver uses 70% GPU on a Macbook Air M1 (8 GB Ram, 8 GPU cores, stereo 44.1 KHz Logic Pro). The GPU is only getting slightly warm with virtually no CPU usage. CPU usage looks higher than it is, as the cores run only at ~1,3 GHz. Maximum is 3.1 GHz. Also the GPU is not running at full speed when rendering 20 instances (0.9 instead of 1.2 GHz). FIR Convolver works nice, but is obviously early access. The GUI dials are a pain to use and the audio buffer is not cleared when logic restarts playback. Other plugins are silent after hitting stop and play. I got it to work in a 44.1 KHz project with a buffer size of 512. in a 96 KHz project there was a lot of crackle, but I don't know if it is supposed to work or not. Didn't invest much time in testing though, but looking forward to what comes next :) Love the idea to utilize the GPU for audio rendering. To be fair, 20 instaces of Logic's built in SpaceDesigner or 🤍ValhallaDSP Room also does not make the M1 sweat. But of course there is a clear amount of CPU usage involved. Keep up the good work! It's very simple to use your video card/gpu as a sound card. The benefit to doing this instead of using a dedicated sound card or motherboard sound card is you can use uncompressed digital 5.1(or 7.1) sound with a home theater receiver and home theater speakers...which are way better than using speakers made for computers such as klipsch promedia speakers, logitech z speakers, edifier speakers, etc. In this video I show how I use my rtx 3090 as my video card and my sound card. I hook up my system for 5.1 surround sound using hdmi cables and an hdmi audio video receiver. Volume 01 is a collection of 10 of our favorite IRs from a recent free release by the Sonic Palimpsest, and give a binaural impression of the Chatham Dockyards in Kent, UK. These IR's are mostly binaural, which means you'll need to wear headphones to get the 3-D effect of the reverb signal. The stereo samples are played, and the reverb itself simulates a binaurally rendered space (cool!). If you are on an Apple device with airpods, make sure to turn *OFF* their spatial audio setting, or it will filter out the natural binaural wraparound of these stereo recordings :) For this demo, we used our Roland SP-404MKII and messed around with some stock sample patches.
