Ever wonder how we use isotopes in geology? Ever wonder about the difference between stable and radiogenic isotopes? Here, I discuss stable isotope fractionation as well as stable isotope applications in igneous petrology (for temperature reconstructions and as isotopes tracers), then we switch to radiogenic isotopes, in which I go over the applications of potassium argon dating, argon argon dating, and uranium lead dating for geochronology, then I briefly cover some other dating methods as well as the fan favorite, carbon dating, and why C dating is not applicable to igneous petrology. Lastly, we touch on isotope petrogenesis, the study of magma sources, and the common isotope pairs we use for this (strontium, hafnium, neodymium, and lead), with an example of how we use Sr isotopes to determine magma source and then how the application of Hf isotopes and Nd isotopes differ to that of Sr isotopes. 02.11.2021

The 40Ar/39Ar technique is an important method in Earth and Planetary sciences which allow precisely dating rocks… Wanna know how it works? This is the technique I truly built my career on. What I learned right away is that a precise and more importantly, an accurate age for a rock is critical to understand the story it tells and the 40Ar/39Ar technique can do both with a permil precision (e.g. 4531 ± 6 Ma eruption on Vesta or 14.81 ±0.02 for the Ries Crater). In this paper, we explain what this technique is all about and we provide a set of best-practice guidelines when reporting and interpreting 40Ar/39Ar data. This paper was published earlier this year in GSA bulletin with a vast list of co-authors involving a large part of the Ar community. A few co-authors on Linkedin: Allen Schaen, Kip Hodges, David Phillips, Leah Morgan, Simon Kelley, Elizabeth Niespolo, Klaudia Kuiper, Laura Webb, Jan Wijbrans, Huaning QIU and Brad Singer. Full list in the paper. Paper here: 🤍 I am a professor at the school of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the director of the Western Australia Argon Isotope Facility, which is part the John De Laeter Centre at Curtin University. I am also part of Space Science and Technology Centre at Curtin University and TIGeR. The laboratory is supported by AuScope. If you want to know a bit more but don't have time to check the article, you can watch the "1P~1M" (1 paper in ~ 1 minute) video below which is a quick ~ 1 minute crash course on Ar dating. #1P1M #research #geology #earthandplanetarysciences #geochronology #science NOTE: such paper allows standardizing a technique across the board and allow for a FAIR reporting of the data. If you are not familiar, FAIR data are data which meet principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability check it here (🤍 as it’s going to become increasingly important for people to publish their data under the FAIR guideline.

Uranium-lead geochronology provides valuable insights into the timing and rates of various geological processes throughout Earth’s history. Isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry is the most precise and accurate technique for U-Pb geochronology. This technique is most commonly applied to single zircon crystals or crystal fragments resulting in small amounts of radiogenic Pb and U available for analysis. Precise and accurate analysis of such small samples requires sensitive ion detection systems. Here, we document recent advances in U-Pb geochronology using a Thermo Scientific™ Triton™ Plus TIMS. 🤍

Speaker: Aratz Beranoguirre, Ph. D., Head of the LA-ICPMS Lab, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany The U-Pb isotopic system is the oldest and most used radiometric method for dating rock and minerals, since its discovery at the end of the 19th century. Traditionally, it has been used to date minerals with a high U and little Pb content, such as zircon, monazite or rutile. Due to the recent developments that occurred in instrumentation and analytical capabilities, above all related to the LA-ICPMS techniques, the applicability of the U–Pb geochronometer has greatly expanded. Nowadays geochronologists are able to increase the spatial resolution of the analyses (analysing smaller amounts of sample) or to analyse minerals with fewer U content. Thus, in the last decade, a new branch of geochronology is opening up, which deals with the U-Pb dating of minerals with little U and/or variable Pb content. During the talk, the LA-ICPMS technique employed in these analyses will be explained and some examples of recently dated minerals will be shown.

Chris Kirkland - Geochronology on the grain to galactic scale

01.05.2023

Geochronology on the grain to galactic scale: How isotopes tell the deep time history of our planet, its resources and (perhaps) even our place in the cosmos. Geochronology is the science of determining the age of geological processes within some degree of accuracy. Mineral exploration models typically need a reliable chronostratigraphic framework, which can only be constructed with robust age data. The absence of such a framework in many greenfield terrains, including under regolith cover, significantly increases the risk to exploration companies owing to the greater inherent uncertainty in exploration models. In this week's session with Chris Kirkland from Curtin University we will discuss a range of geochronology isotope tools applied to different minerals to understand the timing of geological processes. Whilst also being a useful means of dating igneous rocks, isotopic systems can also be used to date metamorphism, fluid-rock interaction, ore genesis, cooling from a metamorphic peak, and even fingerprint where material has moved from, both in the surface environment but also in the deep Earth. As metals are transported by fluids this information can be critical for understanding a mineral system. With the advent of large datasets of isotopic information, periodic patterns are increasingly becoming evident. These patterns appear to connect processes on Earth to the larger scale driver, which may be plate tectonics. However, on the Early Earth, perhaps some of the processes of crust production extend all the way out to the galactic environment, driven by cometary impacts. This talk has the ambition to present geological information on a vast range of temporal and spatial scales and to, hopefully, demonstrate how isotopic information has been profound for our understanding of the planet we live on.

GEOCHRONOLOGY meaning in English | Whats the Meaning of GEOCHRONOLOGY Definition, Synonyms and use [ Recommended : 🤍 ] GEOCHRONOLOGY meaning in English | Whats the Meaning of GEOCHRONOLOGY Definition, Synonyms and use Translation: Translation is the translation of a source-language text into a target-language text that conveys the same meaning. Parts of Speech: Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions, conjunctions and interjections make up the eight parts of speech in the English language. The word's part of speech reveals its meaning and grammatical function in the context of the sentence. When employed in various contexts, a single word may operate as more than one element of speech. In order to correctly define a word in a dictionary, you must know the components of speech. Noun: When we use the word "noun," we're referring to a person or a location or an object or an idea or a quality. Pronoun: The pronouns I, you, he, she, it, we, they, I, myself, this, that, who, which, and everyone serve as noun substitutes and nouns. Verb: The verb in a phrase conveys a sense of activity or existence. A primary verb is used, and one or more supporting verbs may also be used. "She's a talented singer." There are two verbs here: sing and can.) Number agreement between verb and subject is required in every sentence (both are singular or both are plural). Tense may also be expressed via the use of distinct verb forms. Adjective: A noun or a pronoun is modified or described by an adjective. It generally responds to the query of which one, what sort, or how many there are. (Usually, articles [a, an, the] are categorised as adjectives.) Adverb: Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, but never nouns. It generally responds when, where, how, why, under what circumstances, and to what extent. Adverbs often end in -ly. Preposition: A preposition is a word that comes before a noun or pronoun in order to build a phrase that modifies another word or phrase. As a result, a preposition is always included in a prepositional sentence. Almost usually, the prepositional phrase serves as an adjective or an adverb. Conjunction: A conjunction connects two words, phrases, or sentences and expresses the link between them. Coordinating conjunctions join grammatically equivalent elements: and, but, or, not, for, so, and yet. Because, although, while, since, and other subordinating conjunctions link sentences that are not equal: because, although, while, since, and so on. Other sorts of conjunctions exist as well. Interjection: Interjections are words that are used to communicate emotion. It is often followed by an exclamation mark. The meaning and the translation is taken from the Google Translate which internally uses Oxford Dictionary. Acquiring geochronology

Like people the age a rock formed can have a dramatic impact on how it develops and how it ends up! Ancient tectonic processes, the weather and changes to land formation all have an impact on the geology. Our ability to identify these events in space and time can help lead us to discoveries. For a mineral deposit to form, particular factors or ingredients are required. It’s about knowing the right place at the right time. Geochemistry and geophysics point us to the right place, and geochronology provides the “when”. When the rock formed, when the mineralisation and alteration occurred and if and when younger overprinting events occurred, may have significant consequences for upgrading or downgrading a deposit. Knowing the “when” of that mineral deposit formation puts us in a far better place for discovering other, related mineral deposits. In short, geochronology tells us that we have rocks that formed at the right time. Combining that with geochemistry and geophysics, tells us we are in the right place. And as with everything we need the right time and the right place to really make things happen!

Timeline: Announcements/Intro at start, lecture 0:04:53, Q&A 1:05:52 How Modern Geochronology is Transforming Our Understanding of Geological Rates: An Example from Alaska (click Show More for details) Cameron Davidson, Ph.D., Charles L Denison Professor of Geology, Carleton College Presented April 26th, 2021 Seminar Lab Details:  Summary: The appreciation of deep time is perhaps one of the most important contributions made by the geosciences, and the discipline of geochronology has come a long way since the foundation was built by the pioneering work of Marie Curie, Ernest Rutherford, and Arthur Holmes in the early 20th century. In this talk, I plan to give a brief review of radioactive decay and how it’s used to date rocks, discuss some of the stunning advances that have been made over the last couple of decades, and then give an example of how modern geochronology is used to answer geological questions from some of our recent work in Alaska. Biography: Cameron Davidson earned a BS in Geology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1986) and received his MS and PhD from Princeton University (1991). He spent three years as a post-doc at the University of Basel (Switzerland) before moving to Beloit College where he taught for seven years before joining the Carleton Geology department in 2002.  Professor Davidson has worked in Alaska for over 30 years and his current research is focused on the accretion and translation history of southern Alaska using U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry of detrital zircon.
