Hi. In this video we look at one of the aircraft's navaid that is in use since 1960's: the VOR. We look at what is a VOR; how does a VOR Transmit signals; the indications given in the cockpit; how to identify VORs; and the uses of VOR. VOR is a short range NAVAID which is still used in different places. Please do watch! Got Feedback or suggestions: send me an email: domxavfer🤍gmail.com. Enjoy!
Are you having trouble Understanding VOR Navigation? While the number of VORs is shrinking and most folks plan to use GPS navigation, you still need to understand them for the Private Pilot written and practical tests. This tutorial walks through the VOR Navigation basics and will have you proficient in less than 9 minutes. Warning: The information provided in this video is for demonstration purposes only. The information and results cannot be used for an actual flight. To plan an actual flight, you will need to use the information in the Pilot’s Operating Handbook, and the other documents associated with the specific airplane you fly. Wiki: Very High Frequency (VHF) Omni-Directional Range (VOR) is a type of short-range radio navigation system for aircraft, enabling aircraft with a receiving unit to determine its position and stay on course by receiving radio signals transmitted by a network of fixed ground radio beacons. It uses frequencies in the very high frequency (VHF) band from 108.00 to 117.95 MHz. Developed in the United States beginning in 1937 and deployed by 1946, VOR is the standard air navigational system in the world, used by both commercial and general aviation. In the year 2000 there were about 3,000 VOR stations operating around the world including 1,033 in the US, reduced to 967 by 2013 (stations are being decommissioned with widespread adoption of GPS). A VOR ground station sends out an omnidirectional master signal, and a highly directional second signal is propagated by a phased antenna array and rotates clockwise in space 30 times a second. This signal is timed so that its phase (compared to the master) varies as the secondary signal rotates, and this phase difference is the same as the angular direction of the 'spinning' signal (so that when the signal is being sent 90 degrees clockwise from north, the signal is 90 degrees out of phase with the master). By comparing the phase of the secondary signal with the master, the angle (bearing) to the aircraft from the station can be determined. This line of position is called the "radial" from the VOR. The intersection of radials from two different VOR stations can be used to fix the position of the aircraft, as in earlier radio direction finding (RDF) systems. VOR stations are fairly short range: the signals are line of sight between transmitter and receiver and are useful for up to 200 miles. Each station broadcasts a VHF radio composite signal including the navigation signal, station's identifier and voice, if so equipped. The navigation signal allows the airborne receiving equipment to determine a bearing from the station to the aircraft (direction from the VOR station in relation to Magnetic North). The station's identifier is typically a three-letter string in Morse code. The voice signal, if used, is usually the station name, in-flight recorded advisories, or live flight service broadcasts. At some locations, this voice signal is a continuous recorded broadcast of Hazardous Inflight Weather Advisory Service or HIWAS. More about the navigation part in the video. Note: These videos are for flight simming only and are not a substitute for going to an actual flight school to acquire your pilots license. In this second VOR navigation example, we will have three planes flying parallel to each other heading towards a VOR. You will learn how to interpret the HSI's CDI needle as you go from the To side over to the From side of the VOR.
This video makes VOR navigation easy to understand through animation. It covers what VORs and radials are, how to tune and ID a VOR, how to find your location from a VOR, and how to correct for the wind using bracketing to fly directly to or from a VOR.

Do you need some help answering VOR navigation questions for your FAA written exam? I'd recommend that you learn our "fail-proof" method for interpretation by starting with this video: 🤍 Then watch this video for some additional examples, plus an explanation of two very practical tasks you'll need to know as a private pilot: 1. How to determine what radial the aircraft is on 2. How to determine the course to fly "direct to" a VOR List of examples: 1. [00:24] Given a VOR indication, determine location relative to VOR. 2. [03:00] Like (1), except this time there is no Course Deviation Indicator (CDI) deflection 3. [04:15] Like (1), except this time there is an "OFF flag" showing 4. [05:49] Given an aircraft location, determine the VOR location. 5. [07:33] Finding radial 6. [09:51] Finding course to station The video assumes you already know the basics of what a VOR is. If you have any questions or comments, please write them down below! If you need one-on-one help from a CFI, please check out: 🤍
VOR holding procedures are one of the most challenging things you'll face on your checkride. To make matters worse, we hardly get to practice them anymore with fewer stations and equipped aircraft out there. Check out our full IFR Training Course at 🤍 What makes this maneuver so tricky is the number of tasks going on in a short amount of time. If you stay methodical and do one thing at a time though, it suddenly becomes easier. We'll start by breaking down the different parts of the holding procedure on the whiteboard, then look at how the VOR receiver is used to fly the hold. Finally, we'll jump in the simulator and actually fly this hold together. Here's the approach plate with the hold we'll be using at Carroll Country Airport (KDMW) 🤍
VOR approaches give every IFR pilot heartburn. There is a ton going on, and the situational awareness required can be greater than on a GPS approach. #vor #navigation #IFR This shows how to figure the distance off course when flying a course to a VOR. The method used in this example shows how to solve the similar type of question on the FAA Instrument (knowledge) Written Exam. 200 feet per dot per nautical mile is used. The distance is in feet and must be divided by 6000 to get the distance off course in nautical miles. Here's a technique I use with all my students when tracking a VOR or GPS course. It involves only the attitude indicator once you're on or near the desired course. Any student pilot can learn to keep the CFI perfectly centered using this technique while never once having to look at the heading indicator.
