Normandy, France, the 11th century. Guillaume “Le Bâtard”, known in English as William the Conqueror, succeeded his father as Duke of Normandy at the age of eight. Despite being impetuous, he was a shrewd strategist who turned Normandy into a powerful duchy, feared by the king of France. After the death of Edward the Confessor, William seized the crown in England thanks to his victory in the battle of Hastings in 1066. This conquest made him one of the most powerful monarchs in western Europe and led to some profound changes in English society, as the Anglo-Saxon elite was replaced by Norman lords. In this clip from The Normans on BBC Select, Professor Robert Bartlett heads to the location where the province of Normandy was born. At the start of the 10th century, Rollo of the Vikings made a deal with Charles, King of France. He swore loyalty to the king and agreed to protect him against other Viking raiders and in return was given the land between the river and the sea, creating the region we now know as Normandy. Soon a great political transformation occurred and Normandy quickly grew, becoming one of the most powerful principalities in France. The Normans also quickly moved away from their Scandinavian routes, becoming wine drinkers and adopting the French language, social structure and legal and administrative systems. Robert II, byname Robert Curthose, French Robert Courteheuse, (born c. 1054—died February 1134, Cardiff, Wales), duke of Normandy (1087–1106), a weak-willed and incompetent ruler whose poor record as an administrator of his domain was partly redeemed by his contribution to the First Crusade (1096–99). The eldest son of William I the Conqueror, Robert was recognized in boyhood as his father’s successor in Normandy. Nevertheless, he twice rebelled against his father (1077/78 and c. 1082–83) and was in exile in Italy until he returned as duke on his father’s death in 1087. He was totally unable to control his rebellious vassals or to establish a central authority in Normandy. In 1091 Robert’s younger brother, King William II of England, invaded Normandy and compelled Robert to yield two counties. William attacked again in 1094, and when a peace was made that gave him control of Normandy in return for money, Robert joined the First Crusade. He fought at Dorylaeum (1097) and was at the capture of Jerusalem (1099). His courageous leadership contributed to the victory at Ascalon (1099). When Robert’s youngest brother, Henry I, succeeded William as king of England (1100), Robert was in Italy. He hastened back to invade England, with ignominious results, and Henry in turn invaded Normandy (1105 and 1106). Captured in the Battle of Tinchebrai (September 28, 1106), Robert spent the rest of his life as a prisoner, dying in Cardiff castle. #CrusadesHistory #MedievalHistory #EuropeanHistory

How did The Normans Conquer England? Across the English Channel lived the Normans. Up in the Northwest of France, above Paris, was a growing Viking settlement in Normandy. Viking History - Rollo of Normandy: The Real Story of One of the Greatest Vikings of History #Viking #Medieval #SeeUinHistory #History
Documentary on Rollo, the Viking founder of Normandy. As the Carolingian Empire fell apart, a new power would come to emanate across the Latin world from the Duchy of Normandy. The Normans, who would become Christendom’s chief crusaders, strangely, were rooted in the heathen Viking raiders that plagued France for generations. It all began with a Norse chieftain, a follower of Odin – Rollo, a seafarer from Scandinavia. Rollo the Viking, and the Norman colony of northwestern France, is one of the most fascinating and important developments of the medieval era. I had a strange dream last night. From wikipedia on the Duke of Normandy In the Channel Islands The Queen is known as The Duke of Normandy. The Channel Islands are the last remaining part of the former Duchy of Normandy to remain under the rule of the British monarch. Although the British monarchy relinquished claims to continental Normandy and other French claims in 1801, the Channel Islands (except for Chausey under French sovereignty) remain Crown dependencies of the British Crown to this day. The British Historian Ben Pimlott noted that while on a visit to the actual region of Normandy, French peasants began to doff their hats and shout "Vive la Duchesse!", to which the Queen supposedly replied "Well, I am the Duke of Normandy!".

Rollo makes a grand entrance with his return to Kattegat. HISTORY’s hit drama series “Vikings” returns on Wednesday, November 28 at 9 PM ET/PT. In the mid-season five finale, the divide between the Lothbrok family climaxes with Ragnar’s sons battling each other to rule the world. The long-awaited faceoff ends with a strategic victory going to Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) who vows vengeance on his betrayers with a direct target on Lagertha’s (Katheryn Winnick) back. Last seen in an unstable state and losing her appearance as a fierce Viking warrior, Lagertha is hopeful she will regain her spot in Kattegat as its rightful leader. Season five returns on November 28 with the arrival of a legendary Viking, the famous Duke Rollo (Clive Standen), who causes further upheaval in a Kattegat still reeling from Ivar the Boneless becoming its King. As Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) and Lagertha flee Ivar’s murderous forces with Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Ivar’s tyrannical reign over Scandinavia ushers in a new Dark Age, the likes of which have never been seen. Ultimately, Ivar’s reign will not go unchallenged by the sons of Ragnar and old enemies will become allies to defeat the despot who has declared himself a God on earth. Meanwhile in Iceland, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) battles the elements, and his own settlers’ desire for revenge, to forge a Viking colony on the beautiful and desolate landscape. #Vikings Subscribe for more HISTORY: 🤍 Check out exclusive HISTORY content: Newsletter: 🤍 Website - 🤍 Facebook - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 HISTORY®, now reaching more than 98 million homes, is the leading destination for award-winning original series and specials that connect viewers with history in an informative, immersive, and entertaining manner across all platforms. Robert the Magnificent, was the Duke of Normandy from 1027 until his death. Owing to uncertainty over the numbering of the Dukes of Normandy he is usually called Robert I, but sometimes Robert II with his ancestor Rollo as Robert I.
