Pick up Psychology and Retrocausality on Amazon! Retrocausality is the study of how the future influences the present and the past, and rejects a unidirectional model of causality (where it is the past that determines the present and future). In 2011, psychologist Daryl Bem published a series of studies which examined how future knowledge would significantly impact past recall of information, an article he titled “Feeling the Future.” This video examines and explains Bem’s research and the blowback it caused. I'm Dr. Mark Hatala and I'm a cognitive scientist who studies time travel and retrocausality. This video is an analysis of Daryl Bem’s “Feeling the Future” research. OMG! So i read this article today: 🤍 Which talks about some research about to be published which may prove that our future has already happened! But then, you already knew i was gonna say that, so why am i bothering?! In all seriousness, Professor of Psychology Daryl J. Bem has undertaken some pretty cool experiments and got some even cooler results. In my video i got the specifics of the experiments a little muddled, but you get the gist. Freaky deaky stuff... Oh and today i stood next to Derren Brown. I always knew that moment would come :)
In social psychology the IKEA effect refers to the observation that people tend to value things higher if they created them itself. The IKEA effect is a cogntive bias where people irrationally judge the value of an object. Such cognitive biases and heuristics show that humans are always object in their judgement or in making decisions. It was shown that people who built IKEA furniture were willing to spend 63% more money compared to equivalent pre-assembled furniture. This experiment was replicated with different objects, such as origami figures. The IKEA effect is related to a larger psychological concept named the self-perception theory. The self-perception theory suggests that people observe their own actions, which then determines their attitude. So if people retrospectively notice they spent a lot of time and effort into making IKEA furniture, they come to the conclusion that the must like this piece of furniture very much. The IKEA effect also goes hand in hand with the sunk cost fallacy, where people tend to spent money and effort into something that is not worth it. Rather than abandoning their efforts they keep going, as they overvalue the situation. Narrated by: Miles Wischnewski SECONDARY CHANNEL - Psyched! I observe additional strange practices and incidents conducting social psychology research. A small group of us become increasingly concerned. When eminent social psychologist Daryl Bem “shows” humans can “see into the future” via extra-sensory perception (“ESP”), it confirms our worst fear. 0:04:18 University-level dysfunctional incentives, publish tons or perish, quantity over quality, devastating PhD student publication "quotas" 0:11:42 Corporatization of universities by business-type people (e.g., MBAs) who don't necessarily have academic backgrounds, so easier to stray from its primary mission of higher learning and scholarship/research (which it HAS strayed from as we'll see; mission creep) 0:13:43 Ideological echo chamber in universities: ►Harvard University discrimination against Asians in the name of "diversity" (to ensure there aren't *too many* Asians on campus Wikipedia page: 🤍 ) ►"Group performance equity" more important than individual-level meritocracy, which is inconsistent with basic Enlightenment values of reason, individual liberty, science, and due process. 0:22:25 Eindhoven University not allowing men to apply for professor position for first 6 months (official tweet: 🤍 )! At a conference, a male researcher questions the soundness of Eindhoven U's sexist affirmative action policy. Someone then "reports" him for violating the conference's "code of conduct", & he is forced into a "meeting" to discuss the incident. He decides to leave the conference society due to ordeal (& increasing political course society is on). 0:24:43 Academia should be the last place to censor speech, must cultivate skill of debating ideas, inviting criticisms no matter how unpleasant or "offensive"; open/public exchange of ideas is the only way effective way to identify & fight against bad ideas (e.g., neo-nazism, genocide, etc.) 0:27:48 Growing concern regarding the techniques we were being trained to use to do social psychology research; We were then mocked by other students/profs for demanding overly "idealistic" research standards; Profs were lukewarm/complacent about our interest in higher research standards; We then learned through back channels (& at conferences) that most other researchers at most other universities were also growing increasingly concerned. (& indeed in all other fields, see 🤍 for a list of over 150 signatories from every imaginable field of study.) 0:36:02 Daryl Bem's bomb: ►Bem reports seemingly compelling evidence, across 9 studies following accepted research standards at the time, suggesting humans have "premonition" or "extra-sensory perception" (ESP) abilities! ►Publicly embarrassing for psychology as a professional field (see James Alcock's devastating post-mortem, 🤍 April 2011) ►Then damage control, and "fearing our future" fate as a field with respect to replicability rates & changes in research standards ►But then different labs initiate Bem replications, and rumors spread regarding other important methods papers in the works, it's exciting to be a scientist again! Time-traveling porn on Colbert report: 🤍 (requires USA IP address) 0:51:29 Faux skepticism: Skeptical enough to appear "rigorous", but not so skeptical that you're perceived as a "difficult person". 0:54:41 Still recovering from the aftermath/shock waves of Bem's bomb, social psychology is hit with another huge scandal: ►Diederik Stapel, Dutch social psychologist, commits fraud in 55+ papers for almost 20 years, another big blow for social psychology (which is still third largest fraud case in history of science; Tilberg U fraud investigation final report 🤍 1:06:39 Swell of grassroots transparency & replication initiatives initiated to increase transparency and encourage the conduct of replications. Highly exciting times to be a scientist, given that we'll raise research standards (& change social norms) forever! In this video series, I attempt to answer the question "Does academic science need to be saved?" by telling stories of my strange adventures & experiences in academia. I then relate those observations to objective peer-reviewed evidence. Dr. LeBel is a psychologist & independent meta-scientist who has contributed to raising transparency & replication standards in academia for more than 10 years. 🤍 🤍 🤍 Media inquiries curatescience🤍gmail.com Partially funded by European Commission Marie-Curie grant #793669 #openScience #replicationCrisis #reproducibilityCrisis

we delve into a fascinating concept known as Self-Perception Theory. This theory helps us understand how we perceive ourselves through our own behavior. The concept of self-perception theory was first introduced by psychologist Daryl Bem in 1972. He proposed that we often determine our attitudes and emotions by observing our actions, just as an outsider would. #selfperception

Self-perception theory is the understanding behind why people behave and act the way they do based on social interactions, experiences, and attitudes. People observe their own behavior and feelings and then conclude and rationalize the reasoning behind their behavior. Often, internal cues are weak, individuals have to visualize themselves using external cues to infer what is going on; it allows for the unfolding of self-knowledge. There is an uncertainty behind the attitude and is open for interpretation because it is not well-defined. There is no deep analysis or strong opinion about the learned behavior. Individuals learn about themselves through observation. Created using PowToon Free sign up at 🤍 Create animated videos and animated presentations for free. Psi and Psychology: The Recent Debate Panelists: Daryl Bem, Jonathan Schooler, Samuel Moulton Moderated by J. Richard Hackman April 21st | 3:30-5:30pm | Tsai Auditorium (CGIS South) Daryl Bem's recent article—Feeling the future: Experimental evidence for anomalous retroactive influences on cognition and affect—has reinvigorated the debate over the existence of extrasensory perception, and sparked a public discussion among social scientists about how to best conduct and report research. This controversial article will be discussed by a panel of scholars who have a diversity of perspectives on the article—and on the role of psi in psychological science more generally. The panel includes: Daryl Bem, a professor emeritus of psychology at Cornell University and the author of the target article. Jonathan Schooler, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a reviewer of Bem's manuscript. Samuel Moulton, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and a researcher who has published evidence against the existence of psi.

A chance encounter with members of the Ku Klux Klan led black musician Daryl Davis on a quest to determine the source of the hate. His unorthodox, yet simple approach, has wielded surprising results and just might be the solution for all racial discourse. Daryl Davis graduated from Howard University with a degree in Jazz. As a pianist, vocalist, and guitarist, he performs nationally and internationally with The Daryl Davis Band. He has also worked with such notables as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, The Legendary Blues Band, and many others. In 1983, A chance occurrence after one of his performances led him to befriend a member of the Ku Klux Klan. This eventually led Daryl to become the first black author to travel the country interviewing KKK leaders and members, all detailed in his book, Klan-Destine Relationships. Today, Daryl owns numerous Klan robes and hoods, given to him by active members who became his friends and renounced the organization. Since his journey began, Davis has joined an all-white country band, attended KKK rallies, and accepted a “certificate of friendship” from the Traditionalist American Knights of the KKK. He’s even the godfather of former Klan Imperial Wizard Roger Kelly’s granddaughter. Davis has received the Elliott-Black and MLK awards as well as numerous other local and national awards for his work in race relations, and is often sought by media outlets as a consultant on the KKK and race relations.
