월드뉴스1: 영국 첫 非백인 총리 나오나, 수낙 전 재무 유력 후보로…존슨은 불출마 For a look at the news from around the world, we now turn to our Matthew Ashley standing by at the Arirang newsroom. Good morning. Good morning. Let's start in the UK,... which by the end of the day could have a new leader. That's right,... former UK chancellor Rishi Sunak is the first to declare his intention to become the Conservative Party's next leader and UK Prime Minister. He threw his name in on Sunday as he has the backing of more than 100 lawmakers, qualifying him for the leadership race. This is the second time the 42-year-old has run for the position in under four months. But his odds of taking up residence at 10 Downing Street improved dramatically on Sunday night, as his main rival,... former PM Boris Johnson dropped out of the leadership contest. Meanwhile, fellow Conservative candidate Penny Mordaunt currently has the support of less than 30 MPs. Those wanting to run in the leadership race need the backing of 100 Conservative lawmakers by Monday 2 PM local time. If more than one candidate reaches this threshold then Conservative party members will vote on the new leader. But if no other candidate manages to get the backing of 100 MPs, then the race will be over and Sunak will be the next UK Prime Minister. #unitedkingdom #leader #arirang_news 📣 Facebook : 🤍 📣 Twitter : 🤍 📣 Homepage : 🤍 2022-10-24, 09:00 (KST)

The UK chancellor and health secretary have resigned from government, saying they no longer have confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Rishi Sunak said the public expected government to be conducted "properly, competently and seriously", while Sajid Javid said government was not "acting in the national interest". Meanwhile, Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi has been picked as chancellor and Steve Barclay, Johnson's chief of staff, now becomes health secretary. The two resignations came minutes after the PM apologised for appointing MP Chris Pincher to a government role after being told about a misconduct complaint against the MP. Mr Pincher has denied allegations of sexual misconduct. Please subscribe HERE 🤍 #BBCNews
Boris Johnson has dragged Rishi Sunak into his partygate hearing by suggesting that if it should have been obvious to him that lockdown rules were being broken in No 10, it should also have been apparent to “the current Prime Minister”. Mr Johnson denied the Privileges Committee's charge that it should have been “obvious” to him that rules were being breached during lockdown gatherings in Downing Street. In response, the former PM said if it had been then it would also have been “obvious” to then-chancellor Rishi Sunak. In the hearing, which lasted almost three hours, Johnson was accused of relying on “flimsy” assurances before issuing his partygate denials, as he insisted there is not a “shred of evidence” to show he lied to MPs. Johnson accepts he misled MPs but denies doing so “recklessly”, insisting he denied lockdown breaches “in good faith” on the advice of officials, who turned out to be wrong. If Mr Johnson fails to convince the committee that he did not deliberately mislead the Commons, he could be found to have committed a contempt of Parliament. A suspension of 10 days or more could result in a high-profile by-election in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat. The full House of Commons would vote on any recommendations and Mr Sunak has agreed to give Tory MPs a free vote on their conscience over Mr Johnson’s fate. Number 10 Downing Street is an unforgiving address. (Subscribe: 🤍 At 10.15 this morning Liz Truss said her un-emotional goodbyes with her family looking on. There was no apology for the chaos that cut her time here pitifully short. Barely two hours later Rishi Sunak appeared alone in front of the black door to thank his predecessors and then blame them for the state we're in, a state that has also enabled him to become prime minister. He talked clearly and seriously about the need to fix mistakes, rebuild trust, and reboot compassion - the broom going in after the mess.
