Can I use Wikipedia when I work with my academic paper? Although Wikipedia is generally not intended for use in academic papers, you can use it as a starting point to get an initial overview of a topic. Sometimes it’s possible to find more detailed and in-depth information via the reference section of an article. Which version of Wikipedia is best to use? What’s the difference between a reference and a simple fact or reading indication? How can I evaluate the credibility of a source? These are some of the issues raised in this conversation between a teacher and a librarian on how and when to use Wikipedia.

" We understand that citing sources can be a daunting task, but it's an essential part of any academic work. Citing Wikipedia articles in particular can be confusing because the information on the website is constantly changing. However, with the proper tools and knowledge, citing these articles can be a breeze". 0:00 Introduction 0:14 Wikipedia reference template 0:52 Wikipedia reference example 3:44 Outro In this video, we'll cover the following: Why it's important to cite sources in APA 7th style. The proper way to format your in-text citations for Wikipedia articles. Watch this video and learn how to properly cite Wikipedia articles in APA 7th style. Your grades (and professors) will thank you. Why it's important to cite Wikipedia articles in APA 7th style: Citing sources is an essential part of any academic work. It not only gives credit to the original author or researcher, but it also helps readers to locate and verify the information used in your work. Wikipedia is a popular source of information for many people, but it is not always reliable. Therefore, it is important to cite Wikipedia articles properly in APA 7th style to demonstrate your credibility as a researcher and to ensure that your readers can evaluate the quality of the information you've used. The proper way to format your in-text citations for Wikipedia articles: In APA 7th style, in-text citations for Wikipedia articles should include the author or screen name and the year of publication. If the article doesn't have a specific author, use the title of the article in place of the author's name. If you're quoting directly from the article, you should also include the specific page number where the quote can be found. For example: (Smith, 2021, para. 4) or ("History of Jazz," 2022, p. 7). How to format your reference list entry for Wikipedia articles: The reference list entry for a Wikipedia article should include the following elements: author or screen name, year of publication, title of the article, name of the website (i.e. Wikipedia), and URL. If the article has a specific publication date, use that instead of the year. If the article has no author, begin the citation with the article title. The format for the reference list entry is as follows: title of the Wikipedia article. (Year of Publication). In Wikipedia. URL. For example: How to cite wikipedia article in APA style. (2021). In Wikipedia. 🤍 to cite wikipedia article in APA style Tips and tricks to make the citation process easier and more efficient: Use a citation management tool, such as Zotero or EndNote, to help you keep track of your sources and format your citations automatically. Take the time to verify the information you're citing, especially when using sources like Wikipedia which can be edited by anyone. Follow a consistent citation style throughout your work to ensure accuracy and readability. If you're unsure about how to cite a particular source, refer to a trusted style guide or consult with a librarian or instructor for guidance. Wikipedia co-founder: I no longer trust the website I created

Freddie Sayers meets Larry Sanger. Listen to the podcast version: 🤍 Read the full article here: 🤍 Chances are, if you’ve ever been on the internet, you’ve visited Wikipedia. It is the world’s fifth largest website, pulling in an estimated 6.1 billion followers per month and serves as a cheat sheet for almost any topic in the world. So great is the online encyclopaedia’s influence is so great that it is the biggest and “most read reference work in history”, with as many as 56 million editions.  But the truth about this supposedly neutral purveyor of information is a little more complex. Historically, Wikipedia has been written and monitored by a community of volunteers who collaborated and contested competing claims with one another. In the words of Wikipedia’s co-founder, Larry Sanger who spoke to Freddie Sayers on LockdownTV, these volunteers would “battle it out”.  This battle of ideas on Wikipedia’s platform formed a crucial part of the encyclopaedia’s commitment to neutrality, which according to Sanger, was abandoned after 2009. In the years since, on issues ranging from Covid to Joe Biden, it has become increasingly partisan, primarily espousing an establishment viewpoint that increasingly represents "propaganda". This, says Sanger, is why he left the site in 2007, describing it as “broken beyond repair”. Follow UnHerd on social media: Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 #wikipedia #covid19 #bias
