The National Library of Wales, Wikimedia UK, and the editing community have worked together since 2014 to host a Wikimedian in Residence and in August 2017 the National Library appointed a Permanent Wikimedian to their staff. Wikipedia and its sister projects are now a core aspect of the Library’s activities and services. In this presentation at digiS in Berlin, Jason outlines the successes of the residency in opening up the collections of the National Library of Wales using Wikidata. Building on the successful collaboration between the Library, Wikimedia UK and the Wiki community, Jason's new role as the National Wikimedian will lead activities associated with the Library’s collections, Wales as a nation and the Welsh language. Read his final report here: 🤍 For more information contact the National Wikimedian, Jason Evans.

Editing Wikipedia has never been easier using the new Visual Editor interface which makes editing Wikipedia as easy as using Microsoft Word or Wordpress blogs. This 1 hour workshop is aimed primarily at anyone who is interested in learning how to edit Wikipedia but, up until now, were never entirely sure how or why to begin. Please create a username on Wikipedia prior to watching by clicking on 'Create Account' in the top right corner of 🤍wikipedia.org A recent survey by Yougov found that around two thirds of the British public trust Wikipedia more than traditional news outlets including the BBC, ITV, the Guardian and the Times. One of the most visited websites worldwide, and now one of the most trusted, Wikipedia is a resource used by most university students. Increasingly, many instructors around the world have used Wikipedia as a teaching tool in their university classrooms as well. Indeed, as the drive for scholarly research to become ever more Open Access gathers pace, Wikipedia will increasingly become the digital gateway to this research.
When making your own Wikipedia article you should aim for at least 100 words with three citations. You should draft your article in your sandbox. Tip: use an exemplar page as your guideline. More information can be found on our website: 🤍

Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit.... but you cannot publish just anything and you must cite what you write. This video covers the main need-to-know information regarding Wikipedia's many policies and guidelines so that any article that is drafted meets the main requirements of its reviewing editors. New Page Patrol editors monitor new articles and check they adhere to Wikipedia's central tenets such as Wikipedia's policy on: Notability Verifiability Neutral Point of View No Original Research Avoiding peacock words and weasel words. Avoiding conflict of interest and more. This video is to make new editors aware of what reviewers are looking for and why articles are sometimes told they need to be worked on further, or speedily deleted.

The GLAM-Wiki Revolution is a short documentary about the GLAM programme in the United Kingdom. The GLAM programme is a series of partnerships between Wikimedia UK, a charity which supports Wikipedia and its editors in the UK, and cultural institutions, known collectively as GLAMs (an acronym for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums). Many choose to play host to a Wikimedian-in-Residence, who acts as a liaison between the institution and the Wikimedia community and works to open up the resources held by the institution through Wikipedia and its sister projects. This documentary gives an overview of the GLAM project in the UK by visiting Wikimedians-in-Residence around the country to learn more about the projects they have run and their experiences in the role. Before starting this step make sure you are logged on and you have enabled Visual Editor. Once you have created a user account you should create a user page on Wikipedia as this is a place where people can find out more information about you and it is also a useful place to signpost to other editors that you are a new user and still learning. You should also add a disclaimer to your user page so that your edits and any conflicts of interests are transparent. For example, 'I am a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh'.
