With 55 million articles in more than 300 languages, Wikipedia attracts 1.7 billion visitors every month. The freely editable content project is supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. As of 2020, the foundation employs more than 300 people and has annual revenues of more than $100m. But at a time when truth is under assault like never before, what role does Wikipedia play in the media ecosystem? What steps is it taking to counter misinformation? And when it comes to hate speech online - should technology giants and social media platforms be the ones to moderate that? We speak to Katherine Maher, the CEO of Wikimedia. - Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 - Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 - Find us on Facebook: 🤍 - Check our website: 🤍

What’s in this episode? Affiliates are the recognized organizations and groups in the Wikimedia movement that support volunteers, advocate for free knowledge and come together as the backbone of the movement. We talk about how Wikimedia’s somewhat ad hoc affiliate landscape has emerged, discuss the relationship between organizations and communities, and imagine what role affiliates can play in a future global council. We hear from.. a movement veteran, Andrew Lih, and Wikimedia Norge’s Executive Director, Elisabeth Carrera. They also share their takes on the draft movement charter! 🇫🇷 📯 🪓 Each year, thousands of men from all over the world join the French Foreign Legion (Légion étrangère). Most come for adventure. Some for a better life. Many to earn a French passport. But no matter their reason for enroling, ALL candidates must accomplish one key thing by the end of basic training if they want to receive any of the Légionnaire perks: learning enough French to function as a soldier! It turns out that most of these men arrive at the recruitment center in France unable to speak a lick of French, and yet manage to get fluent enough in mere months to understand orders, describe the workings of their HK416F service rifle, and have conversations with fellow Légionnaires. So how do they learn so fast? And what can we non-Légionnaires learn from their method? These are precisely the questions I answer in this video. 📺 WATCH NEXT: How hard is French to learn for English speakers? In July 2020, the Presidential Palace in Paris took down its French flag, and put up a new one that uses a very slightly darker shade of blue. Mr Macron has been using the darker flag in press conferences ever since. And somehow, no-one [in the media] noticed it until this week. So what does this mean? Fresh from it's excursions at the hands of Hammond and Clarkson on The Grand Tour's 'Carnage a Trois' special, this stunning Citroën SM, previously owned by Mike Brewer (he of Wheeler Dealers fame) has arrived in the workshop, ready for the attention of Iain and his team. It was impossible to ignore shining the spotlight on this 1970's French exotic straight away! Iain delves in to the history of this car that broke the mould in France as Citroën created a high-performance luxury grand-tourer. Having bought Maserati in 1968, Citroën combined a V6 crafted by Guilio Alfieri with in-house styling by Robert Opron to create this masterpiece, full of technical innovations well ahead of it's time. Circumstances meant that just under 13,000 were produced in total. Join Iain to discover why this classic is so revered, as he treats the engine to a tune-up before taking it out on the road to sample it's delights. 00:00 - Introduction 01:14 - European engine taxation 02:43 - Maserati and Alfieri's V6 05:44 - Engine layout 06:53 - Engine multi-tasking 08:06 - Groundbreaking technical innovations 09:57 - Aerodynamic tear-drop 10:20 - Interior 10:35 - Media star 11:27 - Engine tuning 12:04 - Road test 20:04 - Kamm tail styling 21:15 - Outro Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments. During the First World War from 1914 - 1918 the Allied powers of France, Belgium and Great Britain (to name a few) tried in vain to break the stalemate on the Western Front and push into Germany to strike a crippling blow against their enemies. Something that is a lot less well known is that in 1923 the Belgians and French, 5 years after the end of the First World War, did in fact invade Germany, specifically the heavily-industrialised Ruhr region in the western Rhineland. This was a huge dilemma for the fledgling Weimar Republic and its President Ebert, as the German Army had been limited to 100,000 men after the Treaty of Versailles, and Germany's economy was in no way ready for war. They did fight the invaders however, but with terrifying unforeseen consequences. any projects don't use a fair use right to display "recent" copyrighted content that they would like to include. But many organisations have publicly available media. How to get them to licence them properly for us? Do you want to see promotional images for a new notable movie or book on Wikipedia? You can't. Media helps promoting volunteer content from Wikimedia projects, and referencing them on search engines, especially pictures in Wikipedia articles. But most media that are under 70 years old are still copyrighted without any licence compatible with what we use (Creative Commons). It means that notable content can't be illustrated properly, and projects have to work with mostly only public domain media. More: copyright issues in the movement are mostly known through court cases, patrolling the projects to erase copyright violations, and lobbying in political institutions. Some projects use US "faire use" and local copyright exceptions to display some limited media anyway. But there doesn't seem to be a framework of collaboration with organisations owning copyrighted content that is notable for free knowledge and Wikimedia projects. However, a lot of companies and organisations spread promotional content for free without a free licence, such as press kits or official media. Some allows case by case requests, for example when a Wikipedia contributor asks them for illustrating a notable article. The movement even got free content from the World Health Organisation during the Covid-19 pandemic. So how to increase the number of copyrighted media under Creative Commons-like licenses? Can we create a framework close to GLAM to free and notable copyrighted content, such as images ? How do we convince small and big copyright holder companies without betraying our own goal? What are they afraid of? How to show them that it's worthwhile? Can we reproduce the success that Wikimedia had with the World Health Organisation? Presenter: J. N. Squire Presentation slide: 🤍
