The Africa Wiki Challenge is an online campaign that is aimed at generating African-related content on Wikipedia. In the maiden edition of the contest, we are pleased to announce that the Africa Wiki Challenge is celebrating Landmarks in Africa as the theme for the maiden edition of the annual competition which runs from 25th May to June 30th 2021. The competition is aimed at improving the statistics of content about Africa on Wikipedia and its sister projects. The theme, Landmarks in Africa, encourages the visual, audio or video documentation as well as written content of the many landmarks that cover historical, cultural, geographical and places of national significance to any country on the African continent. The 8th edition of Wiki Loves Africa – one of Africa’s largest photographic competitions – that takes place across Africa is open for entries. This year, professional and amateur photographers, videographers, filmmakers, audiophiles, and Commonists are invited to submit entries under the theme of Home and Habitat. Wiki Loves Africa has challenged the distorting lens of Western media stereotypes since 2014. It encourages people across the continent to change the visual narrative, close the gaps and alter global perceptions of “Africa ” on Wikipedia (and beyond). “A single image holds immense power. This power has been welded with dire consequences to paint a negative ‘single story’ of Africa. That power can also be used to positive effect. Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video, and audio) on a wide range of African topics and experiences to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects. The competition is organized by Wiki In Africa, a South Africa-based nonprofit focused on sharing the diversity of Africa’s knowledge, history, culture, and contemporary reality through freely-licensed online contributions. Since it was launched in 2014, more than 72,000 images have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by Africa’s photographers to add a visual, authentically African perspective to Wikipedia articles. These images have been viewed over 787 million times, with each view helping to change perceptions and enhance understanding of Africa.
