This mysterious island simply appeared and then disappeared on Google Maps! We've seen this small piece of land on maps ever since 1876 – when a French ship supposedly discovered it. Sandy Island has been systematically "undiscovered" over the years, but it has yet to be erased completely from all maps. You may even find it on some maps with the label ED – which means "existence doubtful." Are you ready to discover this mysterious place and other unique places around the world? #brightside Credit: Surtsey: By Brian Gratwicke - 🤍 CC BY 2.0 🤍 🤍 Lascaux entrance: By Ethan Doyle White, CC BY-SA 3.0 🤍 🤍 Animation is created by Bright Side. Sandy Island was one of the most idealistic islands we had been to. There was white sand, palm trees and the brightest blue water we had seen to date. We had an amazing time exploring the little island and getting to swim amongst a beautiful coral reef full of fish. It is a beautifully unique island, it is tiny but it seems everyone finds their own little spot amongst the palm trees and leaves everyone else alone. It feels very secluded because of the fact that everyone gets on and does their own thing. We could have spent a lot more time there but we have to start making our way up the islands 🏝️ If you would like to support our videos as well as help us save up towards new camera equipment (we have had 3 GoPros break in a one month and our bigger DSLR cameras are starting to give us trouble) that never seems to last on a yacht. ❤️YOUTUBE MEMBERS - 🧡PATREON - 🤍 📸⛵️Follow us on our Social Media:⛵️📸 Facebook - 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Karen - 🤍 Teagan - 🤍 Colben - 🤍 Sailing to Carriacou 🌈⛵️ 🤍

A South Pacific island, shown on marine charts and world maps as well as on Google Earth and Google Maps, does not exist, Australian scientists say. The supposedly sizable strip of land, named Sandy Island on Google maps, was positioned midway between Australia and French-governed New Caledonia. A recent scientific research cruise found only the blue ocean of the Coral Sea. Due to a lack of appearance of an island or depths indicating a shallow reef they reported that "Sandy Island'', does not exist. The 'undiscovery' of this island by the team of scientists led by the University of Sydney resulted in worldwide scientific debate. A spokesman for Google said they consult a variety of authoritative sources when making their maps so how did this island find its way onto the maps? Australia's Hydrographic Service, which produces the country's nautical charts, says its appearance on some scientific maps and Google Earth could just be the result of human error, repeated down the years. After all, to err is human The BBC's Duncan Kennedy in Sydney comments that while most explorers dream of discovering uncharted territory, the Australian team appears to have done the opposite - and cartographers everywhere are now rushing to undiscover Sandy Island forever. Dana Beach talks about efforts in 1993 to build a bridge to the island to harvest timber and enable possible development. Objections from residents and conservation groups led to national interest in the pristine island, and eventually the majority of the island was turned into the Sandy Island Preserve. Sandy Island native Laura Herriott talks about the history and close-knit community that make up this unique island, which quashed a major development plan so that residents could continue to celebrate their Gullah roots and lifestyle to this day. Sandy Island Google Earth Mystery, it seems an image saved in archive shows something dark where the Island should be located. Then was this image cut out ? Was the Island used for any secret tests that could have removed it all the way of 4km down to the ocean surface ? This the reason to quickly cut it out from Google Earth maps ?

In September 1774, explorer James Cook "discovered" Sandy Island in the Coral Sea, not far from French New Caledonia. For the next two centuries, the island is shown on maps and charts, until in 2012 Google Maps removes it from every online map as a consequence of a scientific expedition that definitively certifies its non-existence. The Sandy Island affair is a blunder of reason, the embodiment of how fallacious our abilities to discern between representation and reality are. This is one of the human characteristics that drive us towards arts, as we do when we go to the theatre, for instance. Armed with imagination and comfortably seated, we are ready to lose ourselves in fiction and identify with people and events that seem real but remain imaginary. But what happens when the perspective is reversed, and the stage becomes the instrument to give shape to the paradoxical encounter with a place that is also the projection of an absence? Come and visit Sandy Island to find out! Sandy Island is an adaptive site-specific installation, running continuously for 60 hours. The installation consists of 288 speakers positioned about 2 metres above the ground and arranged to form a rectangular surface of about 70 square metres. LED panels will close the space between the speakers and the floor to create an immersive environment. The intervention is inseparable from the place that hosts it and the sound and visual materials are a direct emanation of it. The visitor is the protagonist of this mise-en-scene, in an unprecedented position on the stage *he is called upon to be part of an ecosystem, the only intangible trace of something that has never existed. Each presence will be recorded by the system through microphones and an AI will modify its evolution in the long term, defining a path based on the shared memory of a collective deception.
