Paul Klee was born on the 18th of December 1879 in Muchenbuchsee, near Bern in Switzerland. Encouraged by his parents, he started violin classes at age seven and proved himself to be a very talented musician. He moved to Munich in 1898 to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts with Heinrich Knirr and Franz von Stuck. His first important works, a series of etchings, called ‘Inventions’ were undertaken between 1903–1905 after a visit to Italy. In June 1905 he visited Paris where he saw Impressionist paintings and the work of van Gogh, Cezanne and the Belgian artist, James Ensor. On 15th of September 1906, he married Lily Stumpf. Naturalistic painting didn’t interest him. His aim was for creativity and imagination to determine the outcome of the picture, inspired by the first layers of paint or marks applied to the canvas. Around 1911 he met August Macke and Wassily Kandinsky. His friendship with Franz Marc proved crucial because it was Marc that showed Klee how far abstraction and a visionary approach to content could be taken. In 1914 he visited Tunisia with Louis Moilliet and August Macke and it was in Hammamet that Klee claimed in his diary that his breakthrough to painting in colour had occurred. ‘Colour and I are one.’ Hans Goltz organised a large retrospective exhibition of 362 Paul Klee paintings in his Munich gallery in May 1920. This was Klee’s breakthrough, but despite a guaranteed annual income, he felt it too risky to rely on just selling paintings. So, he accepted an offer to teach at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. In 1925 Paul Klee’s pedagogical sketchbook, based on his visual form lectures, was published as a student Bauhaus manual. By the mid-1920s Klee’s reputation had spread far beyond Germany. In 1926 Paul Klee took part in the Surrealist’s first exhibition in Paris and in 1928 he visited Egypt. In March 1930 the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA presented an exhibition of his work, the institution’s first solo show by a living European artist. In 1933, when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, Klee was denounced as a "Galician Jew" and a "cultural Bolshevik," and his work derided as "subversive" and "insane." In 1936 Paul Klee was diagnosed with progressive scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease and for over almost a year was almost incapable of working. In April of 1937 17 paintings by Paul Klee were shown at the infamous exhibition of Degenerate Art in Munich. The Nazi’s also confiscated over 100 of his works from public collections in Germany. Paul Klee’s late paintings and drawings are strongly influenced by the harsh distortions of Pablo Picasso’s work of the 1920s and ’30s. Paul Klee died in hospital in Locarno, Switzerland 29th of June 1940. In 2005 Zentrum Paul Klee Museum opened as an independent institution and research centre containing around 40% of Paul Klee’s entire output. Interested in DRAWING? Paul Klee was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland, and is considered both a German and a Swiss painter. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was also a student of orientalism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered colour theory, and wrote extensively about it; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are considered so important for modern art that they are compared to the importance that Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting had for Renaissance. He and his colleague, the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the German Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality.

Mid century modern, Paul Klee - Randomly showed 70 of his best paintings with titles Paul Klee was a Swiss-German artist born on December 18, 1879, in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland. He was known for his unique style that blended abstract and expressionist art, along with a range of other styles such as cubism, surrealism, and primitivism. Klee was the son of a music teacher, and his family encouraged his artistic pursuits from a young age. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was influenced by the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. He also became interested in the music of Arnold Schoenberg and began to explore the connections between music and art. Klee's early works were influenced by the German Expressionist movement, and he was associated with the group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) alongside artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Klee's work was characterized by the use of vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and whimsical imagery. Klee was a prolific artist and produced a vast body of work throughout his career. His work ranged from small, delicate watercolors to large, abstract paintings. He was also an accomplished teacher and taught at the Bauhaus school in Germany from 1921 to 1931, where he taught courses in theory, design, and painting. During his lifetime, Klee's work was not widely recognized, and he struggled to gain recognition in the art world. However, his work has since become highly regarded and influential, and he is now considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Klee's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and his influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary artists. He is remembered for his unique style, his innovative use of color and form, and his deep understanding of the connections between art and music. paul klee, best paintings, best work, abstract painting, mid century modern, modern paintings, mid century paintings, mid century abstract

Witty, inventive, magical, his exquisite paintings resist easy classification. He is mentioned in the same breath as Matisse, Picasso and his Bauhaus contemporary Kandinsky. He cuts a radical figure in European modernism. His influence on abstraction can be seen in the works of Rothko, Miró and beyond. Who is your go-to artist for understanding composition? Klee’s example is especially useful for students facing down the ‘missing background’ problem. That moment when the subject of the drawing or painting simply floats on a blank background because there was no plan what to do. Paul Klee shows how the three key elements of a picture – its subject, the open space around the subject, and the edges of the picture – are all connected to each other in the eye of a picture maker. In this video I share some simple techniques for solving this problem before it occurs. The video includes 5 Art Activities that are suitable for Elementary, Middle, and High school students, art teachers, and art hobbyists. It is especially useful for young artists beginning to make observational drawings and paintings. Simple Paul Klee method using oil paint and watercolour This is a very easy technique to follow and it can produce some interesting results with a little practice. The oil paint lines that are created by transfer of paint on stretched string build up the composition and allow for easy application of the watercolour. Build up layers of different colours and highlight shapes formed by the grid of lines. The demo shown here is an improvised example but you could try copying some of Paul Klee's work or draw the composition before application of the oil paint. Don't aim for perfection, it is the little flaws and smudges that make this technique so interesting.

Worldwide Head of Impressionist & Modern Art, Helena Newman, analyzes several of Paul Klee’s pivotal paintings from 1918 & 1919 inspired by his trip to Tunis, as well as works from 1939 & 1941 which were heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement. Newman navigates the evolution of Klee’s style from works like Landscape With Gallows, Ruins With Stylites, and Memorial For N, all full of explosive kaleidoscopic imagery, abstract lines, and powerful iconographic symbols, all the way through Klee’s shift in creative sensibility to works like The Colorful Woman and Remains Of A Castle, which are defined by a more abstract geometric style. Paul Klee’s works come from the David M. Solinger Collection and will be offered as a part of the David M. Solinger Collection Evening Auction in New York on the 14th of November at 5:30 PM EST. I had some requests to film a version of the Paul Klee demo that uses water base paints. In this example I use block printing ink and watercolour paint. Materials 200gsm smooth card or heavyweight cartridge paper SCOLA water based block printing ink (black) Watercolour pan set. Selection of colours, you could also use tubes, ink or even acrylic paint. Tin foil for the transfer of the block ink (use extra strong foil) This can simply be recycled when you have finished. Copy paper for the sketch using pencil. Cocktail stick or blunt pencil. 0:00 Block printing ink. This is a water based ink and I use this mainly for producing linocut printing. With a little experimentation I discovered that it is a great alternative to using oil based paints for mono-printing. Using a roller try to create a smooth thin layer of the ink. 0:58 Tin foil. I use extra strong foil here to prevent damage when working on the drawing. 1:19 With the roller begin to create the transfer sheet with the block printing ink. Use firm pressure until all the surface of the foil is covered. 2:25 The artwork. Here I use some thin copy paper and begin to sketch out the design, I base this sketch on one of Paul Klee's fish motifs that are a common subject within his work. Keep the lines and shapes very simple and try to create space between the lines. 3:33 Remove excess printing ink. Using some scrap paper or newspaper press lightly on to the foil, this will prevent the first prints from becoming too dark. 4:04 Begin to transfer the sketch onto the surface (I use 200gsm smooth card here) Lightly place the foil onto the surface, place your original sketch on top and with firm pressure applied with a blunt pencil or cocktail stick trace over the lines, lift the foil to check that this is being transferred correctly, if it appears too dark simply remove more paint. 6:15 Improvise by adding extra lines to the composition, don't be tempted to make an exact copy of the original sketch. 7:14 Adding the colour. For the purpose of this demo I am using a small portable 12 pan sketch set of watercolour (Daler Rowney) I really enjoy working with these sets, great for colouring ink sketches and using outdoors on sketching locations. Allow the block printing ink to dry completely before adding any colour (about 1 hour) Because the block printing ink is water based it will bleed a little into the colour, this will produce interesting effects and add to the composition but be careful not to add too much water. I use a mix of only 3 colours, Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre and Cadmium Red. 13:35 THE FINISHED WORK Composition inspired by Paul Klee using water based block printing ink and watercolour paint. 200gsm card approx 12" x 10"

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance. He and his colleague, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture in Germany. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. Paul Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, as the second child of German music teacher Hans Wilhelm Klee and Swiss singer Ida Marie Klee, born Frick. His sister Mathilde was born on 28 January 1876 in Walzenhausen. Their father came from Tann and studied singing, piano, organ and violin at the Stuttgart Conservatory, where he met his future wife Ida Frick. Hans Wilhelm Klee was active as a music teacher at the Bern State Seminary in Hofwil near Bern until 1931. Klee was able to develop his music skills as his parents encouraged and inspired him throughout his life. In 1880, his family moved to Bern, where they eventually, in 1897, after a number of changes of residence, moved into their own house in the Kirchenfeld district. From 1886 to 1890, Klee visited primary school and received, at the age of 7, violin classes at the Municipal Music School. He was so talented on violin that, aged 11, he received an invitation to play as an extraordinary member of the Bern Music Association. Klee taught at the Bauhaus from January 1921 to April 1931. He was a "Form" master in the bookbinding, stained glass, and mural painting workshops and was provided with two studios. In 1922, Kandinsky joined the staff and resumed his friendship with Klee. Later that year the first Bauhaus exhibition and festival was held, for which Klee created several of the advertising materials. Klee welcomed the many conflicting theories and opinions within the Bauhaus: "I also approve of these forces competing one with the other if the result is achievement." Klee was also a member of Die Blaue Vier (The Blue Four), with Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, and Alexej von Jawlensky; formed in 1923, they lectured and exhibited together in the US in 1925. That same year, Klee had his first exhibits in Paris, and he became a hit with the French Surrealists. Klee visited Egypt in 1928, which impressed him less than Tunisia. In 1929, the first major monograph on Klee's work was published, written by Will Grohmann. Klee also taught at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1931 to 1933, and was singled out by a Nazi newspaper, "Then that great fellow Klee comes onto the scene, already famed as a Bauhaus teacher in Dessau. He tells everyone he's a thoroughbred Arab, but he's a typical Galician Jew." His home was searched by the Gestapo and he was fired from his job. His self-portrait Struck from the List (1933) commemorates the sad occasion. In 1933–34, Klee had shows in London and Paris, and finally met Pablo Picasso, whom he greatly admired. The Klee family emigrated to Switzerland in late 1933. Klee was at the peak of his creative output. His Ad Parnassum is considered his masterpiece and the best example of his pointillist style; it is also one of his largest, most finely worked paintings. He produced nearly 500 works in 1933 during his last year in Germany. However, in 1933, Klee began experiencing the symptoms of what was diagnosed as scleroderma after his death. The progression of his fatal disease, which made swallowing very difficult, can be followed through the art he created in his last years. His output in 1936 was only 25 pictures. In the later 1930s, his health recovered somewhat and he was encouraged by a visit from Kandinsky and Picasso. Klee's simpler and larger designs enabled him to keep up his output in his final years, and in 1939 he created over 1,200 works, a career high for one year. He used heavier lines and mainly geometric forms with fewer but larger blocks of color. His varied color palettes, some with bright colors and others somber, perhaps reflected his alternating moods of optimism and pessimism. Back in Germany in 1937, seventeen of Klee's pictures were included in an exhibition of "Degenerate art" and 102 of his works in public collections were seized by the Nazis. #dantirels #oilpaint #artdemo #Paul_Klee Inspired by...... series of demos. (No 2 Paul Klee) Oil Paint Transfer (with watercolour) I recently had an inquiry about this technique, so thought it would make an interesting demo for others to try for themselves. Please note that the samples shown here are just illustrating the method and the end results should not be judged as finished artworks. I would advise anyone to check out the work of Paul Klee if you are not familiar with this artist. As you will see I am using a slightly thicker paper which is designed to work with oil paint, I also use watercolour so the paper needs to be able to handle a lot of water, 250gsm heavyweight mixedmedia paper is used. Frog masking tape is great for using with waterbased paints as it reacts to moisture and seals the edges, although it is not essential. The oil paint transfer paper is just ordinary photocopy paper. (any thin paper will work just as well) Materials : Photocopy paper (or any thin paper) 250gsm mixed media paper for use with oil-based paints Ivory Black oil paint Watercolour (various) Frog masking tape. Rag, pencil, cocktail stick. Brushes and water. Method : To create the oil paint transfer sheet spread a thin layer of black oil paint onto the photocopy paper. I use a paper towel in the demo but you could use a brush, sponge, or soft rag. Do not apply too much paint or this will not work very well and the lines will be too heavy. Place the transfer sheet onto the heavyweight paper and then begin to trace out your composition using a pencil or cocktail stick applying various degrees of pressure to create heavy or light marks. Keep lifting the transfer sheet to check progress. Try a clean composition with simple shapes and lines and try not to overwork at this stage. You can leave this as a monochrome artwork or begin to add colour using watercolour paint. Use plenty of water and a large brush to completely cover the drawing (no need to let the oil paint dry) You will achieve some interesting blurred line effects using this method. Remove some of the paint with a paper towel and add a second colour if needed. This is a great technique to try and I hope you enjoy exploring the possibilities. Use this method to transfer the artwork onto a canvas. Just draw out the composition on paper then on the reverse use the thin layer of oil paint. It's like a version of carbon copy paper. Paul Klee (18 December 1879 29 June 1940) was a Swiss painter of German nationality. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was, as well, a student of orientalism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered color theory, and wrote extensively about it. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes child-like perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. He and his friend, the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the German Bauhaus school of art and architecture.

Explore line and layering transparent colour to create a painting that combines drawing, portraiture and abstraction. Based on Klee’s work Senecio. Paul Klee was a Swiss artist, born in 1879. He was an intellectual painter and teacher influenced by Cubism, Expressionism and Surrealism. Klee taught at the famous Bauhaus from 1921-1931 with fellow artist Kandinsky. Klee was an accomplished musician and this influenced his work, he often played the violin to warm up before painting in his studio. Klee challenged boundaries in art by using symbols, hieroglyphs, poetry and language. Like Picasso, he drew inspiration from the simplicity of children’s artwork. He often experimented with materials and processes, especially the application of paint. The art activities in this unit focus on geometry, shape, colour and line. These elements will be explored through drawing, painting and construction.
