Plywood production requires a good log, called a peeler, which is generally straighter and larger in diameter than one required for processing into dimensioned lumber by a sawmill. The log is laid horizontally and rotated about its long axis while a long blade is pressed into it, causing a thin layer of wood to peel off (much as a continuous sheet of paper from a roll). An adjustable nosebar, which may be solid or a roller, is pressed against the log during rotation, to create a "gap" for veneer to pass through between the knife and the nosebar. The nosebar partly compresses the wood as it is peeled; it controls vibration of the peeling knife; and assists in keeping the veneer being peeled to an accurate thickness. In this way the log is peeled into sheets of veneer, which are then cut to the desired oversize dimensions, to allow it to shrink (depending on wood species) when dried. The sheets are then patched, graded, glued together and then baked in a press at a temperature of at least 140 °C (284 °F), and at a pressure of up to 1.9 MPa (280 psi) (but more commonly 200 psi) to form the plywood panel. The panel can then be patched, have minor surface defects such as splits or small knot holes filled, re-sized, sanded or otherwise refinished, depending on the market for which it is intended. Plywood for indoor use generally uses the less expensive urea-formaldehyde glue, which has limited water resistance, while outdoor and marine-grade plywood are designed to withstand moisture, and use a water-resistant phenol-formaldehyde glue to prevent delamination and to retain strength in high humidity. Handling and cutting a full sheet of plywood or any sheet material can be a challenge in a one-person shop. To make your woodworking life a little easier, Nick has developed four simple fixtures and combined them in a ingenious system for managing sheet materials. Used together, these shop-built tools allow you to move, position, and make amazingly accurate cuts in plywood, particleboard, and other sheet goods. And because we know you will be asking, Nick's co-star in this video is Bella, our shop-dog-in-training. She's a one-year-old short-haired "red" border collie/kelpie cross, and a handful. CNC Cutting Plywood CNC Router Beginner to Pro EP 04 is the title of the next chapter in learning your CNC Router. This episode is packed full with useful hands on tips to make you more successful in using your CNC machine. First I will show you how to set Z0 on top of your spoilboard and explain the advantages of doing it this way. Next I am using painters tape as a spacer to separate the plywood project from the spoilboard. I am going to use my trusted Z height tool setter to set up the machine so precise that I can split the painters tape in half. As a beginner or as a pro it is important to set up save Z height (in VCarve) so that you do not run into any of your clamps while the machine makes rapid moves. To cut out the Standing Desktop Converter from baltic birch I am using a 0.125 inch (3.175mm) compression cnc router bit. Roger compares OSB 3 board and plywood and gives his opinion on the best option. OSB board vs Plywood (from Champion Timber) OSB board and plywood are both hugely popular sheeting materials used in modern-day property builds. Whether they’re being used in wall sheathing, flooring or roofs, they both have their own particular suitability and also their own downfalls. So which is best to use in your project? OSB board OSB board was introduced in the 70s as an alternative to plywood for load-bearing building applications. It’s made up of layers of cross-oriented strands of timber and bonded with a waterproof resin. Their unique formation allows them to withstand high levels of stress. They are more often than not covered by layers of plaster and paint to achieve a polished look. Plywood Plywood has been around much longer than OSB board and was the favoured sheeting material until the cost savings of OSB became apparent. Flexible, durable and hardwood plywoods are suitable for a variety of applications. Both OSB board and plywood are flexible and durable options for any project. They are ideal for property builds as sheet materials for walls, floors and roofs and are also great for use in smaller projects. Environmental factors OSB board is made from a FSC mix of 70% timber, meaning that it is composed of a minimum of 70% FSC-certified wood/pulp and the balance is controlled wood or reclaimed material. Plywood is certified as FSC 100%. The majority of the time OSB boards are the cheaper option and for this reason, are now favoured in most building applications. However, when it comes to DIY, plywood still reigns supreme – most probably due to the natural wood appearance of ply. 🤍 #carpentry #woodworking #diyprojects 🔗 Skill Builder Link Tree: 🤍 👍 Tell us what you like: 🤍 📪 Ask Skill Builder: 🤍 📣 Facebook: 🤍 📷 Instagram: 🤍 🛒 As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases 🎬 All videos: 🤍 💧 We Support Charity Water: 🤍 ◾ Out of respect to our channel sponsors and the wide variety of people who watch our videos, we'll remove comments that do not follow common standards of politeness and decency.

I recommend reading the reports on a 40,000 year old mammoth ivory rope making tool from Hohl Fels, here's a link to just one of the news articles that has good images, but there are also more scientific reports available: 🤍 I now have a 'buy me a coffee' page which helps fund my ongoing research and the making of these free videos. It's Patterned Plywood time again! This time I'm working on a bunch of patterns based on the Hexagon. They may look complicated, but I guarantee they are easier to make than you think. Also, it's a great way to use up the scrap plywood you don't know what to do with. 🤍 Thank you to this weeks sponsor Rockler Woodworking and Hardware.
