Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a widely used and supported routing protocol. It's an interior gateway protocol (IGP) meaning it been designed to be used within a single autonomous system. It also falls under the category of Link-state routing protocols. Routers running OSPF learn about the enter network in order to create routes. They do this by flooding Link State Updates. There are three steps to the process. Become neighbours - Two routers running OSPF on the same link agree to form a neighbour relationship Exchange database information - The neighbouring routers swap their LSDB information with each other Choose the best routes - Each router chooses the best routes to add to its routing table based on the learned LSDB information #ccna #cisco #networking

Start learning cybersecurity with CBT Nuggets. 🤍 In this video, Keith Barker covers OSPF, the protocol that makes it possible for your routers to forward traffic all the way through your network. There are a lot of different topics to deal with when you break down OSPF, but Keith covers them with easy examples and simple demonstrations: Start off with a sample network topology to visualize how OSPF works on it Breaking down how LSAs make OSPF possible How Link State Databases provide routers with all the network information they need OSPF Hello messages and how they help routers share data Visualizing the sort of network that OSPF would be useful for can help understand exactly how it does that. Keith starts with a sample network topology and splits it into areas. Different routers provide access to different areas, and eventually they'll become OSPF neighbors. But before you get to that, it's important to understand Link State Advertisements (LSA). When you have a network topology with multiple zones, the connecting routers are responsible for creating an LSA and broadcasting them. LSAs contain all the information about the networks that each router services. With OSPF, it's possible for routers to "meet" one another, send "hello"s to one another and share their link state information. Link State Databases are shared between OSPF routers, and in turn those routers leverage the data inside those databases to make decisions about routing data across the entire network. OSPF is the language that makes it possible for all the routers across a network to collaborate like this. It also makes it possible to carve the network up into smaller chunks so that you don't have to create routing tables for every last destination in the network on every single router. 🌐 Download the Free Ultimate Networking Cert Guide: 🤍 ⬇️ 13-Week Study Plan: CCNA (200-301): 🤍 Start learning with CBT Nuggets: • Juniper OSPF | 🤍 • Intro to Networking | 🤍 • TCP/IP IPv4 | 🤍

OSPF makes use of three tables: Neighbor Table, Topology Table, and a Routing Table. The Topology table in OSPF is referred to as the Link State Database (LSDB). Each entry within the topology table is referred to as a Link State Advertisement (LSA). In this video we'll unpack each of these terms. Then we'll take a look at the types of OSPF Packets: Hello Packets, DBDs, LSRs, LSUs, and LSAcks (Database Descriptors, Link State Requests, Link State Updates, and Link State Acknowledgements). These five packets are involved in every OSPF conversation.

OSPF is Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) designed to distribute routing information between routers belonging to the same Autonomous System (AS). 🤍 The protocol is based on link-state technology that has several advantages over distance-vector protocols such as RIP: no hop count limitations; multicast addressing is used to send routing information updates; updates are sent only when network topology changes occur; the logical definition of networks where routers are divided into areas transfers and tags external routes injected into AS.

Single area OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) works great in small networks however as the networks grow, some down sides to single area OSPF start to surface. Huge LSDB! OSPF will gather the entire network information and create an LSDB. This database will be the same on every router on the entire network. This can become very large filled with information that the router doesn't even really need. Massive routing tables! Along with the large LSDB, huge routing tables will be generated on each router. This will contain every subnet within the entire network! Updates everywhere! OSPF is great at responding to changes, however in such a large network problem can occur. Every router will need to reevaluate all routes and run the SPF algorithm anytime a change occurs, even if that change is as small as a network cable being unplugged. I’m sure you can imagine the work load required in a large network. The solution! OSPF multi areas is designed to segments your network and allows routers to summarise routes between the areas reducing the problems mentioned above. Designing OSPF multi areas takes some planning to get the full benefit. Each area should contain subnets that can be summarised. All areas must connect to the backbone area/Area 0 #ccna #cisco #networking

The DISH (Designated Intermediate System to Intermediate System) state is a transitory state in the OSPF protocol that occurs when a router is in the process of becoming a Designated Router (DR) or a Backup Designated Router (BDR). In OSPF, a DR is a router that is responsible for sending link state advertisements (LSAs) to other routers in the network. The DR is elected by the other routers in the network through a process called the "DR election." The BDR is a router that is responsible for assisting the DR in sending LSAs to other routers in the network. The DISH state occurs when a router is in the process of becoming a DR or BDR. This typically happens when a new router is introduced to the network and needs to be included in the DR election process. The DISH state allows the router to synchronize its routing information with the DR and BDR before it becomes a fully-functioning member of the network. Overall, the OSPF protocol is used to help ensure that data is transmitted efficiently and reliably between devices on a network, and the DISH state is an important part of this process.

Advance your networking knowledge with access to thousands of training videos instantly with INE's All Access Pass: 🤍 A large part of understanding the operation of OSPFv2, and being able to troubleshoot the protocol, is being able to identify the different types of OSPFv2 LSAs and how they are used by the protocol. Understanding OSPF design requires understanding OSPF Areas. And to truly understand OSPF areas, you must understand OSPF types of Routers. We'll be explaining both of these concepts in this lesson. OSPF allows for a two-tier hierarchy with Area 0 (the backbone area) at the top, and every other area connected through Area 0. This creates a Hub and Spoke area design. Routers in OSPF are labeled based upon where they sit in the Area design. There are four types of OSPF Routers: Internal Routers, Backbone Routers, Area Border Routers (ABR), and Autonomous System Border Routers (ASBR). In this lesson we'll be illustrating the roles and functionalities of each of these Routers. 0:00 - Intro 0:20 - Why do we need OSPF areas? 2:44 - OSPF Area Types 3:55 - OSPF Types of Routers 4:58 - ABR - Area Border Router 6:08 - ASBR - Autonomous System Border Routers 7:16 - Summary 💬 Join us on Discord: 🤍 📜 More free CCNA resources: 🤍 #ospf #ccna #backbone
