‘If you got pregnant, that was a crime’: uncovering the Catholic zealotry and cruelty of Ireland’s ‘mother and baby homes’ Director: Mia Mullarkey (🤍 Producer: Alice McDowell Watch more free videos on Aeon: 🤍 Subscribe to the Aeon Video newsletter: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Follow us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Watch 'Mother and Baby' on Aeon: 🤍 Throughout the 20th century in Ireland, some 56,000 pregnant unmarried women were forced to give birth in ‘mother and baby homes’ run by the Catholic Church. Infants born into these institutions were either put up for adoption – sometimes without their mother’s consent – or fostered, or else raised on the premises in desolate conditions. And, as revealed by the Irish government’s recent inquiry into mother and baby homes abuses, these children also died inside with startling frequency, with a reported 15 per cent infant mortality rate at the 18 facilities investigated. Released in 2017, the powerful short documentary Mother and Baby by the Irish director Mia Mullarkey profiles some of the surviving children of the infamous Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Taum, County Galway, who are still grappling, decades later, with the wanton cruelty and trauma they endured – all with the complicity of the Irish state and the Catholic Church.

'You Survive' by Luka Bloom (🤍) Shot and Directed by Mia Mullarkey of Ishka Films (🤍 'You Survive' is a story of survival in the face of a possible ending of one's life. It came to me from a friend in West Cork, who bravely shared with me her story. She also suggested I needed to write a song, as there is such an epidemic of people ending their lives in Ireland these days. Having heard her story, I decided to write a song about survival and love. A song about reaching out; hanging in. Not an easy song to write, or to get right. I loved recording it with Brian Masterson; love the strings and Frankie Lane's sublime pedal steel playing. Mia Mullarkey had filmed a nice video for Dignity and Backbone last summer. I invited her to do a film for another song. She chose You Survive. I was surprised and delighted. I asked her to do what she felt, and left her at it. My only condition was that I not be in it. Just singing the song in the background. Mia is a great artist with a great heart. I love the way she films. In this little film, she has felt all the lonesomeness of the song, as well as the love and determination. And brought this to the screen with the grace and goodness in her nature. I never 'plug' my songs in any big way. I just let them off and whatever happens happens. But I really hope people see and hear this. And if it shines a little light in one person's darkness then it's job is done. Luka Bloom Luka would like all listeners to consider a donation to Pieta House to support the important work they carry out in suicide and self harm prevention. Video by Mia Mullarkey Additional Camera by Eddie Mullarkey Song produced and written by Anna Mullarkey Mixed By Frankie J Pollard Mastered by Fergal Davis Released by Strangebrew Exploring themes of personal growth, confusion, and uncertainty, Mullarkey uses analogue synthesisers and samples in this retro-futuristic, minimalist new track. The probing beat and escalating electronic chimes are combined with an enchanting, ethereal voice, which draws the listener in. It is ominous and disquieting, but also suggests the potential for self-acceptance.
Irish Travellers or Mincéirí are an indigenous ethnic minority group who have been part of Irish society for centuries. Travellers share traditions, cultural values, language and customs that make them a distinct ethnic group. Traveller women have a unique aesthetic expression. How they express themselves and their sense of identity through their hair is a source of intrigue. Why this long luxurious flow in all its glory - plaits, rolls, ribbons, top knots and curls? What have the women to say about their hair, its physical appearance, its traditions, its rituals, and what it means to them? The portraits in the exhibition Crown beoir quietly offer some of the answers. This unique photography exhibition explores hair as a powerful symbol of culture and identity. This is a very special short film created by the award-winning filmmaker Mia Mullarkey featuring the portrait exhibition and some of the Traveller/Mincéir women speaking of their connection to their hair. They speak about the physical appearance of their hair, traditions, and what it means to them and as an expression of unique Traveller identity. The exhibition is part of a project entitled Crown - Hair and Identity which focuses on Traveller/Mincéiri women and girls and the subject of how hair is intrinsically linked to identity, ethnicity, culture and gender. The exhibition draws its name from the Traveller language Gammon/Cant, with beoir meaning woman. Crown beoir is presented in tandem with its sister exhibition Crown lakeen, which focuses on the girls who participated in the project and takes place at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar. Crown - Hair and Identity was originated by Breda Mayock who worked with Traveller women and girls in the Maple Youth Centre, Ballinrobe, and Mayo Traveller Support Group. She worked with photographer Orla Sloyan, to photograph the women with a special emphasis placed on their hair. For further information on the project and the Crown exhibitions, visit 🤍 and the 🤍thelinenhall.com. Support for this work is gratefully acknowledged from Creative Ireland Mayo, Mayo County Council Arts Service and the Healthy Ireland Fund. Once upon a time, during World War Two (or "The Emergency", as it was known in Ireland), enigmatic Irish-German woman Erina Brady brought cutting edge Modern Dance to Ireland, from Germany. A forgotten reel of film by Irish film industry founder Liam Ó Laoghaire immortalised the mysterious modern dancer teaching her tiny pupils in her Harcourt Street Studio and dancing freely in the open air in his 1943 gem of a film, "Dance School". Setting eyes on this rare footage for the first time, "1943 A Dance Odyssey", brings five of Brady's former tiny pupils - Margaret Becker, Ann Danaher, Ann Fryer/Walsh, Romy Hogan, and Barbara Sweetman-Fitzgerald - on an odyssey to a bygone era in her enchanted Irish School of Dance Art studio. Seventy years on, 1943 A Dance Odyssey, explores who were these tiny dancers, attempting an arabesque, and stretching out their little limbs in barefoot dance of expression? Where did the dance of life take them? Unlocking fond memories of those extraordinary classes the women share how the modern dance pioneer influenced their lives, and opened them up to a lifetime of creativity. Produced, Written & Directed by Deirdre Mulrooney Shot & Edited by Mia Mullarkey; Music Composition by Rossa Ó Snodaigh Running time: 24 minutes, 24 seconds. First broadcast on RTE One on April 1st (Easter Monday), 2013. Screened at Bealtaine Festival May 28th, 2013; Culture Night 2013 [September 21st], Druid Lane Theatre, Galway, and Galway Film Fleadh, 2014.
