The stern section of the cargo ship Rena begins to sink three months after running aground on a New Zealand reef
Watch one of the most expensive salvage cases in recent history in New Zeeland explained by a hardcore Salvor :"If you are out there you might as well enjoy it!"
What really happened in the tragic Rena grounding in New Zealand. A great video of government inaction, corporate negligence, and a community finally taking over what has become New Zealand's worst ever environmental disaster.
Salvage crews will begin removing containers from the stranded ship off New Zealand's northern coast after an operation to remove its fuel load was completed.
10years ago on the 5th October 2011 the "MV" Rena hit the Astrolabe Reef of the Coast of Tauranga after trying to take a short cut which failed causing the ship sinking and spilling it's Bunker Oil and Containers . This is showing how the Sea Life is now taking over the Vessel as an extended artificial reef with a large Kelp Forest now taking over . A brief history of the "MV" Rena can be found here ;- 🤍 This came from Newshub's Saturday 2nd October 6pm News .
New Zealand authorities filed charges against the company that owns the cargo ship Rena, which grounded off the country's north coast last October. Many say the spillage from the vessel created the country's worst environmental disaster. Stormy seas continue to hamper salvage operations, while the ship has so far leaked around 300 tonnes of oil and lost around 70 of its 1,000 plus containers. Authorities are now worried the stricken Liberian-flagged ship could break in two, releasing the rest of the oil into the pristine waters of the Bay of Plenty. Source: The Guardian, The Herald Sun
Salvage teams in New Zealand are risking their lives on board the shipwrecked Rena container vessel. A large crack in the hull shows just how close the ship is to breaking up, and with every large swell the weight of the vessel, half on Astrolabe Reef, and half in the water, puts extra strain on it. All the salvage team is thinking of, however, is saving the Bay of Plenty from further pollution. What is in the news today? Watch as the containers are removed from the Rena, and then how she breaks in two on Astrolabe reef in this awesome time lapse video.
The MV Rena was moved at a speed of 17 knots when it grounded on Astrolabe Reef off the coast of New Zealand on October 5, 2011, during a voyage from Napier to port of Tauranga. At the time, the ship was carrying over 1,300 containers and 1,733 tonnes of heavy fuel. What resulted became the country’s worst maritime environmental disaster which took years to clean-up. The cause of the shipwreck was the captain's and crew's failure to comply with proper voyage planning, navigation and watch keeping, as well as insufficient control of the ship's captain over the ship's safety management system. As a result of the accident, about 200 tons of fuel oil were spilled, and a significant number of cargo containers were thrown overboard. A few days later, it was decided to unload the container ship in every possible way to relieve the pressure. With the onset of bad weather, the Rena began to list heavily, and her cargo racks collapsed, causing several containers to fall into the water. 12 October. Rena received a crack in the middle part of the ship's hull. The authorities launched an operation about a possible leakage of oil products. The tanker Awanuia pumps oil from the sunken ship on October 17. The Awanuia was eventually forced to shut down due to bad weather. But in the end there was a major oil spill. November 23rd. At this point, almost all containers were removed from the stern. Later it turned out that there were 21 more containers with dangerous goods on board, which were not listed in the ship's manifest. In the early morning of January 8, the Rena's hull broke in half when the ship hit the ship with strong waves up to 6 meters high. There were 830 containers left on board at the time and it is estimated that around 200-300 were lost overboard when it broke in half. On January 10, the Rena's stern slid off the reef and began to sink. Here it is moments before it sank with a lot of debris in the surrounding waters. A few hours later, on January 10, Rena's bridge was almost completely submerged. The contents of refrigerated containers had to be unloaded manually. Strong unrest led to the rapid destruction of the aft part within 24 hours In May 2012, rescue cranes lift containers and fill up the bow of the Rena. Rescue operations to eliminate the wreckage of the ship continued for several more months. On October 1, 2012, the owners of MV Rena, the shipping company Daina Shipping, were ordered to pay 22 millions $ to settle a number of claims against the government and several public authorities, including Maritime NZ, Bay Council of Plenty County Health, the Environment Agency, the Minister for Local Government (signed as the Territorial Authority of Motiti Island) and the New Zealand Transport Agency. None of the crew members were injured. The captain and second mate were sentenced to 7 months. And this tragedy has left its mark. And again, our nature suffers in all this. Thanks for watching to the end, subscribe to see more. Seven feet under the keel.

MV Rena From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia was a 3,351 TEU container ship owned by the Greek shipping company Costamare Inc. through one of its subsidiaries, Daina Shipping Co. The ship was built in 1990 as ZIM America for the Israeli shipping company Zim by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel, Germany. She was renamed Andaman Sea in 2007 and had sailed under her current name and owner since 2010. On 5 October 2011 the Rena ran aground near Tauranga, New Zealand, resulting in an oil spill.[3] On 8 January 2012 the Rena broke in two after enduring heavy winds and seas overnight.[4] By 10 January the stern section had sunk almost completely. On Wednesday, 5 October 2011, at 2:20 AM while sailing from Napier to Tauranga, the Rena ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef off the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.[3][11] The ship was carrying 1,368 containers, eight of which contained hazardous materials, as well as 1,700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 200 tonnes of marine diesel.[12] By Sunday, 9 October, a 5-kilometre (3.1 mi) oil slick threatened wildlife and the area's rich fishing waters.[13] Oil from the Rena began washing ashore at Mount Maunganui beach on 10 October.[14] Bad weather that night caused the ship to shift on the reef, and the crew were evacuated.[15][16] The shifting of the ship caused further damage, resulting in a further 130–350 tonnes of oil leaking.[16] On 11 October the spill was declared New Zealand's worst ever maritime environmental disaster by Environment Minister Nick Smith.[17] By 13 October the ship was listing by 20°, and 88 of her 1368 containers had fallen into the sea.[18] Rena splitting Due to increased pressure to her hull, Rena was expected at any point to split in two, furthering the environmental impact of the disaster.[19] It was reported on 14 October 2011, that Rena had cracked in two, held together only by her internal structure and the reef itself. On 8 January 2012, it was reported that the Rena had broken in two, and while the bow section remained firmly grounded on the reef, the split had caused both sections to slew away from each other and settle lower in the water.[20] This caused further debris and oil to be released into the sea. By 10 January the stern section had been submerged almost completely,[5] and on 4 April it slipped further down the reef and disappeared completely from the surface.
The container ship Rena grounded on Astrolabe Reef on 5 Oct, spilling heavy fuel oil out into the sea. The ship contains 1700 tonnes of oil, and oil recovery attempts and rescue efforts for affected wildlife are underway. WWF staff are in Tauranga assisting with the rescue and clean up efforts. Accompanied by Tsutomu on Guitar (former AIE), Ryo on Bass (former The Chef Cooks Me) and Katsuya on Drum (former Onsa). RENA falls into a math progression with optimistic melodies like the one he’s done before for As Meias and Bluebeard. The video for the song “Wish” features a girl as a model, walking around coastal areas planting flowers made of paper windmills. If any television channel would make a drama, this song would perfectly fit. The album by Rena entitled Renaissance has already been released by BE WATER RECORDS on 16 March 2016” 🤍 🤍 🤍

Compilation of images taken from a Harvest weather station located on the bridge of the MV Rena which ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef off the cast of Tauranga. The final images are off the stern sinking (taking with it the weather station and webcam!). Images are from 22/12/2011 to 10/01/2012.
Deep dive to the stern section of the MV Rena, With James and Ben. Wicked day diving, lots of life around good conditions 🤍
This was filmed over 2 trips over 2 years on the MV RENA that sank on Astrolabe Reef off Tauranga on October 5th 2011. There are stark differences in the fish life seen on the first trip (May 2016) which was only 2 months after the exclusion zone was lifted and the area heavily fished compared with only 2 years later when the hype had dropped showing a healthy wreck/reef teeming with life. All divers are conducting technical dives with decompression. Special thanks to Go Dive, Descend Scuba Diving and ScubaForce who supplied me a drysuit. This is a fantastic dive site and we have only just scratched the surface! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did filming and putting this together! I dive Sidemount on a homemade rig with an Xdeep Stealth wing. Buddies use mixture of Twins, Sidemount, SF2 Rebreather, JJ Rebreather, Poseidon Rebreather. Music is Shapeshifter - Monarch, and Gravity. News clip is from Stuff.co.nz.
4 Videos that shows the tipping over and removal of some containers. Dispite the fact the 40mm steel slings with shackles are swinging like crazy, nobody was hurt in any way..... Although the vids looks the same it's always different what I post.... More footage to come... keep checking my channel...Thanks!

Scuba Diving Astrolab Reef Off Tauranga New Zealand. Its getting hard to tell what is reef and what is remains of the ship
On 5th October 2011, due to navigation errors near the Astrolabe Reef, the Rena ran aground near Tauranga, New Zealand, resulting in an oil spill. 🤍 Rena left the New Zealand port of Napier at 1020 on 4 October 2011, bound for the port of Tauranga. The master had given an estimated time of arrival at 0300 the next day. After departure, the master noticed currents on the chart and authorised the watchkeepers to deviate from the planned course to shorten the distance, and to search for the least unfavourable currents. The Rena's second mate took over the watch shortly after midnight on 4 October. Tauranga Harbour Control informed the second mate that the latest time the Rena could take the harbour pilot on board was 0300. The planned course to the Tauranga pilot station was to pass two nm north of Astrolabe Reef before making the final adjustment in course to the pilot station. The second mate decided to reduce the two miles to one mile to save time. Short cut leads to disaster again! 🤍 GREAT PHOTOS HERE: 🤍 🤍
MV Rena was a container vessel that ran aground on Astrolabe Reef, Bay of Plenty in October 2011. After attempts to remove the vessel from the reef the vessel broke apart and sank in the surrounding water. An expensive salvage exercise was carried out over the next few years and the ship was eventually opened up to the public for recreational fishing and scuba diving. The wreck diving caters for advanced, and intermediate divers with accessible swim thrus and large concentrations of fish life having taken residence. The stern section sits in 50m but the broken bow section is in accessible depth. This dive was organised by Mount Maunganui Underwater Club then President Steve Fox t to assess the suitability of the wreck for recreational diving prior to the location being opened to the public. The club undertake monthly club trips to local diva attractions including the Rena. Tauranga charter vessels and the local dive shop Dive Zone Tauranga can arrange scuba trips.
At least once a year we head out for a week of monitoring at Otaiti to look at the environmental impacts of the Rena shipwreck.
