But we (hopefully) all know: you won't burn only fat in this specific place by training it. STILL: having strong lower abs is very beneficial. It keeps your core tight, prevents back pain, makes your belly look flatter because you can "hold it in" better and: if you lose that fat, you will also see your Ab Lines! Please, please, please make sure: ▸ to keep your LOWER BACK FLAT ON THE MAT. This is essential for your health & essential for training your lower abs. If you don't keep it flat on the mat, you will not train your lower abs. Only move your legs downwards as far as possible (for example during a leg lift). If that means you only have a small range of motion: FINE. You will improve over time. ▸ you can lay your head on the mat, if that's more comfortable. This makes it ever harder for the lower abs! I tend to lift my head after some minutes, because I otherwise feel my lower back lifting off the mat. ▸ it's about the mind muscle connection! Think about your abs & lift and lower your legs with the strength of your abs, not your thighs. Hope you enjoy this routine! This follow along workout is an abdominal at home workout to strengthen your core and abdominal muscles. In this video, I am going to show you that not only yes, you can preferentially target the lower abdominal muscles, but how to do so in the most effective way possible. With three simple exercises (plus a bonus exercise) and some tips on how to do them, you will be well on your way to sculpting your lower abs. You might have been told that there is no way to isolate one area of the abs over the other. In other words, you cannot work the lower abs without also working the rest of the abdominal muscles. This is true. However, based on where we initiate the movement from, we can preferentially influence the portion of the abs that we are looking for. To target the upper abs, you would perform top-down movements such as a standard crunch, but if you wanted to hit the lower ab muscles, you would perform bottom-up movements. The lower abs are subject to another anatomical manipulation and that comes from the position of the pelvis and the low back. To most effectively influence the lower abs, you will want a flat back throughout every ab exercise that you do. To achieve this back position, you are going to need to be in a posterior pelvic tilt. By curling your pelvis in and under, you are also helping to reduce the activation of the hip flexors during these movements. Next, you are going to want to set your hip angle. Ideally this will be at 90º for both your hips and your knees. However, to make the exercise easier, you will want to bring that angle closer towards your chest and to make it harder, open the angle so that your legs are farther away. Whatever angle you set, make sure to keep that angle throughout the entirety of the exercise. So what exercises can we do and how do we do them in order to most effectively target your lower abs? First up, we have swipers. The goal is to get your legs in the air by raising your pelvis completely off the ground and swiping your hands underneath where your butt was. This exercise is great because it has automatic feedback built into the movement. If you successfully curled your pelvis off the ground and towards your chest, you will be able to swipe your hands together no problem. If not, you need to focus on lifting that pelvis. Next, we have reverse knee tucks, but they should really be called tailbone lifts. Why? Traditionally, most people usually allow their hip flexors to dominate the movement and simply bring their knees towards their abdomen. To really make the lower abs work in this exercise, think about lifting the tailbone off the ground and bringing your knees to about forehead level. This will ensure that you are limiting the amount of work the hip flexors are doing and maximizing the work that the lower abs are performing. The next ab exercise is a more dynamic and tougher version of the standard plank called the plank knee slide. By incorporating the same principles that were introduced earlier, you will be effectively targeting the lower abs throughout this movement (if performed correctly, of course). Just make sure you are going slow and deliberate with each part of the movement. A bonus exercise that is probably one of the most effective ab exercises of all time for hitting the lower abs is the hanging leg raise. Instead of simply raising your legs up, I like to give the cue of showing your butt to the person in front of you. This will disengage the hip flexors and allow the abs to take on the brunt of the work. Another reason this exercise is so great is because you are lifting the weight of your legs against the force of gravity. To intensify each of these exercises, simply engage the adductors. On 3 of the 4 ab exercises I showed you, you can simply cross your legs and squeeze them together. On the plank knee slides, think about isometrically dragging the plant foot inwards. Furthermore, you can also add rotation to the exercises as well since the fibers of the lower abs run at a slightly oblique angle. None of this is going to matter if you have too much body fat covering the lower abs themselves. No exercise is going to spot reduce that fat. How To SCULPT Your Lower Abs: 3 Key Exercises You Should Be Doing

When it comes to how to get six pack abs, you cannot neglect your lower abs as they are key to achieving well developed 6 pack abs. But as you probably know by now, getting the lower abs to pop is no easy task. And although nutrition does play a huge role to flatten the lower belly, you can actually develop the lower abs to make them appear more visible and defined. That’s why I’m going to show you 3 of the best exercises for lower abs you can incorporate into your next intense lower ab workout. If you’ve been putting yourself through lower abs workout after workout without any results to show for it, then you need to watch this video. Now first off, for those saying that the upper abs and lower abs can’t be selectively targeted, research clearly indicates otherwise. In fact, multiple EMG analyses have concluded that “top down” abs exercises will preferentially target the upper abs whereas “bottom up” abs exercises will preferentially target the lower abs. So if you want to develop your lower abs most effectively, you need to choose the best bottom up abs exercises to do so. And one of the best lower abs exercises is the reverse crunch. However, most people just don’t perform it in a way that actually works the lower abs. A mistake I commonly come across is that many people would aimlessly swing their legs up and down. What this does, essentially, is turn the reverse crunch into a hip flexor exercise. If you want reverse crunches to target your lower abs, you need to maintain a posterior pelvic tilt before initiating the movement and then simply focus on curling your pelvis up towards your shoulders. Visualize the lower abs working as you perform each rep while avoiding using momentum. You will then want to progress this lower ab exercise overtime for the best results, which can be done by adding a weighted ball between your knees and/or performing the exercise on a decline. The second exercise that needs to be included in your lower abs workout is the hanging leg raise. As with the reverse crunches, its effectiveness on targeting the lower abs depends on how you perform it. When done incorrectly, it can quickly become a hip flexor dominant movement as well. Once again, you need to maintain a posterior pelvic tilt before starting the movement by contracting your core and pushing your hips forward. Again here you’ll want to simply focus on curling your pelvis up towards your shoulders rather than just swinging your legs up. This helps ensure that you’re targeting the lower abs. These can be done hanging off of a bar and then progressed by adding weight between the feet. Alternatively, these can be made easier by doing these on a Captain’s Chair leg raise or performing them with bent knees at first. The final lower abs exercise – also one of the best exercises for lower abs – is the ab wheel roll-out. And of course, its effectiveness depends on proper execution. Before performing this exercise, you want to move into a posterior pelvic tilt by thinking about pulling your belly button into your spine and pushing your hips forward. This will enable you to have a slight flexion to your spine. Not only will you be better able to engage the lower abs, but you’ll also put your lower back in a safer position during the roll-out. Then, as you roll out and back, make sure you don’t cheat by bending your knees on the way back. The hips should not move further back than where they started from each rep. I hope that you were able to see that when it comes to how to get lower abs and a well-defined six pack, you need to not only choose the right exercises, but you need to ensure you’re performing them optimally as well. Doing so, together with the implementation of the right nutrition plan, is going to be the key to dropping your body fat, and developing those much-coveted six-pack abs. If you want to challenge your abs a little bit more, do this workout with weights. You can hold a dumbbell between your feet or perform this workout with ankle weights.
