Aldous Huxley (26 July 1894 – 22 November 1963) was an English writer and philosopher. He wrote nearly fifty books both novels and non-fiction works—as well as wide-ranging essays, narratives, and poems. In his most famous novel Brave New World (1932) and his final novel Island (1962), he presented his vision of dystopia and utopia, respectively. George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, biting social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism and mass surveillance. As a writer, Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction and polemical journalism; and is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). Le film raconte l’histoire croisée de George Orwell et d’Aldous Huxley, les auteurs des deux grands romans d’anticipation : 1984 et Le meilleur des mondes. Ces deux romanciers font partis des témoins les plus lucides des maux du XXème siècle. Ils sont avant tout des visionnaires incroyables. The battle between two of the greatest dystopian novels Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four is strikingly urgent in our world of Donald Trump, 'fake news', and technological advances. On the Intelligence Squared stage, we have Will Self arguing for Brave New World and Adam Gopnik arguing for Nineteen Eighty-Four. The debate was chaired by Jonathan Freedland. Dystopian books and films are in the zeitgeist. Reflecting the often dark mood of our times, Intelligence Squared are staging a contest between two of the greatest dystopian novels, 'Brave New World' and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'. Each book captured the nightmares of the 1930s and 40s. But which vision looks more prescient to us now in the 21st century? Are we living in George Orwell’s sinister surveillance state? Or in Aldous Huxley’s vapid consumerist culture? To battle it out, we brought two celebrated writers, Adam Gopnik and Will Self, to our stage. After Donald Trump was elected, it seemed as if 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' had clinched it. The book shot to the top of the bestseller charts. It felt so ominously familiar. In Orwell’s dystopia, the corporate state controls the news, insisting that ‘whatever the Party holds to be truth is truth’. That sounds very like Trump’s ‘alternative facts’, and the war he is waging on the ‘fake news’ media. Orwell imagined two-way telescreens spying on every citizen’s home. Today we have Amazon’s ‘always listening’ Alexa device, while Google, Facebook and the security agencies hoover up our personal data for their own ends. Orwell also described an Inner Party – two percent of the population – enjoying all the privileges and political control. Isn’t that scarily close to the ‘one percent’, reviled for their wealth and influence by anti-capitalists today? No wonder everyone rushed out to buy the book. But Orwell’s critics say 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' is a dated dystopia, a vision that died along with communism. The novel that better resonates with our present, they say, is 'Brave New World'. Here Aldous Huxley imagined a plastic techno-society where sex is casual, entertainment light and consumerism rampant. There are pills to make people happy, virtual reality shows to distract the masses from actual reality, and hook-ups to take the place of love and commitment. Isn’t that all a bit close to home? Huxley even imagined a caste system created by genetic engineering, from alpha and beta types right down to a slave underclass. We may not have gone down that road, but gene-editing might soon enable Silicon Valley’s super-rich to extend their lifespans and enhance the looks and intelligence of their offspring. Will we soon witness the birth of a new genetic super-class? Both these novels imagined extraordinary futures, but which better captures our present and offers the keener warning about where we may be heading? George Orwell (pseudônimo de Eric Arthur Blair) nasceu em 25 de junho de 1903, na Índia. Com menos de um ano de idade, o escritor foi morar na Inglaterra, onde estudou no Eton College. Mais tarde, trabalhou na Polícia Imperial Indiana, na Birmânia, e, também, lutou na Guerra Civil Espanhola, ao lado dos republicanos. Foi apenas em 1945 que o autor teve sucesso em sua carreira literária, com a publicação de seu livro A revolução dos bichos. Depois, o romancista publicou, em 1949, sua obra mais famosa, o livro 1984, que, assim como aquele, condena os regimes totalitários. British Government Reportedly Believes "Radicalization Into The Far-Right" Can Occur From Reading Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Aldous Huxley, And George Orwell. Writing in The Spectator, author Douglas Murray revealed he viewed a number of documents from the United Kingdom's Research, Information and Communications Unit (RICU) that show the agency is now attempting to address "right wing extremism." One of the documents he viewed contained a "reading list of historical texts which produce red flags to RICU." According to Murray this list included Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan, John Locke's Two Treatises of Government and Edmund Burke's Reflection on the Revolution in France. He also noted it contained select works by Thomas Carlyle and Adam Smith. Murray goes on to claim, "Elsewhere RICU warns that radicalisation could occur from books by authors including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Aldous Huxley and Joseph Conrad." In fact, Murray details that George Orwell's 1984 is also on this list of books that produces red flags to RICU. An independent review of Prevent, a program that encompasses RICU, seemingly found that the strategy was capturing "mainstream politicians, commentators, or publications" in its web for identifying ideological extremism. In the British government's response to this review, a foreword by Home Secretary Suella Braverman reveaks, "[Prevent] has defined the extreme right-wing too broadly, so that it sometimes draws in right-wing and centre-right politicians and commentators." 🤍
