Fugitive former National Security Agency (NSA) systems analyst Edward Snowden has been honoured with an award by a group of retired US national security officers. In video released by WikiLeaks, Snowden is presented with the annual Sam Adams Award by former US security officers. The video is believed to have been shot on Wednesday 9 October in Moscow at an undisclosed location, where Mr Snowden was granted asylum in August. The award is named for a CIA analyst during the Vietnam War who accused the US military of deliberately underestimating the enemy's strength for political purposes. The Americans, who once worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Justice Department and the NSA, have criticised the US government and exposed what they believed was wrongdoing in the security agencies. All are supporters of Mr Snowden, who has been charged in the US with violating the Espionage Act for disclosing the NSA's surveillance of phone and internet usage around the world. In a short speech, Snowden criticised US surveillance methods, describing them as dangerous to democracy. Edward Snowden addresses the Oxford Union as part of the Sam Adams awards ceremony on 19th February 2014. ABOUT EDWARD SNOWDEN: Edward Joseph Snowden (born June 21, 1983) is an American computer specialist, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee, former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor. He came to international attention when he disclosed a large number of classified NSA documents to several media outlets. The leaked documents revealed operational details of a global surveillance apparatus run by the NSA and other members of the Five Eyes alliance, along with numerous commercial and international partners. Snowden is considered a fugitive by American authorities who in June 2013 charged him with espionage and theft of government property. In early 2014, numerous media outlets and politicians issued calls for leniency in the form ofclemency, amnesty or pardon, while others called for him to be imprisoned or killed. He lives in an undisclosed location in Russia and, according to German politician Hans-Christian Ströbele, continues to seek permanent asylum "in a 'democratic' country" such as Germany or France. And finally in Europe. The American fugitive... Edward Snowden has received one of Sweden′s highest honors... after exposing the extent of government surveillance in the U.S. and its reach across the world. Paul, tell us more about this international award? Well, it′s often referred to as the alternative Nobel Prize. The Right Livelihood Honorary Award, which typically honors grass-roots activists, was established in 1980 to support those offering answers to the most urgent challenges in modern society. The former CIA and National Security Agency contractor accepted the award during a ceremony at the Swedish Parliament on Monday. Speaking via video-link from Russia, Snowden said he had no regrets about his actions. "All the prices we′ve paid, all the sacrifices we made, I believe we would do again... // ...this is about our rights, this is about what kind of societies that we want to live in, the kind of government that we want to have, the kind of world that we want to make for the next generation." During his speech, Snowden also called on the United Nations to propose new measures to protect public privacy. Other laureates included Asma Jahangir for promoting human rights in Pakistan and Bill McKibben from the U.S. for his work on climate change. Chery. All right Paul,... thanks for those updates. We′ll see you back... in just about two hours.

When the journalists behind the documentary Citizenfour took to the stage to the accept the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday, they stood alongside a young woman that many may have not recognized. Lindsay Mills has been central to the life of whistleblower Edward Snowden, on whom the film is focused. The two have been dating for an unknown number of years. Mills lived with Snowden in Hawaii and later joined him in Moscow, where he has been granted asylum since the revelations came to light in June 2013. She has been living with him in Russia since 2014. Mills' life was thrown into the spotlight after Snowden leaked the NSA documents, but she has largely flown under the radar since then, occasionally being photographed alongside Snowden in Moscow. 🤍 🤍
🤍 - In their first return to the United States since exposing the National Security Agency's mass surveillance operations, journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras were honored in New York City on Friday with the George Polk Award for National Security Reporting. Over the past 10 months, Poitras and Greenwald have played key roles in reporting the massive trove of documents leaked by Edward Snowden. They were joined by colleagues Ewen MacAskill of The Guardian and Barton Gellman of The Washington Post, with whom they shared the award. In their acceptance speeches, Poitras and Greenwald paid tribute to their source. "Each one of these awards just provides further vindication that what [Snowden] did in coming forward was absolutely the right thing to do and merits gratitude, and not indictments and decades in prison," Greenwald said. "None of us would be here ... without the fact that someone decided to sacrifice their life to make this information available," Poitras said. "And so this award is really for Edward Snowden." US whistleblower Edward Snowden has been nominated for the EU's top human rights award, worth €50.000. A former US Security Agency employee, Snowden was shortlisted on Tuesday by the Greens in the European Parliament. The nomination comes after he revealed earlier in June that the US government had been carrying out mass surveillance programmes on citizens and governments. "The Greens-EFA is proud of having nominated Edward Snowden for the 2013 Sakharov Prize. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the prize, we think that this whistleblower incarnates the values of the prize. He listened to his conscience and stood up against oppression and state of exception, putting his life at risk for the benefit of the many." said Greens-EFA MEP José Bové. Snowden is one of the seven nominees for the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought, whose past winners include Nobel Peace Prize Nelson Mandela. Other candidates to the prize are a teenage Pakistani girl who has become a symbol for the right to education for women or the first man who protested against the violation of human rights by the Turkish government. "With the Sakharov Prize, the EP has the opportunity to send an important signal to both the government of Turkey but much more importantly to all those people who stood peacefully in protest of violations of humans rights, such as the freedom of assembly, of the press, of speech, of the internet, of the rights of women, and of minorities.", said Dutch ALDE MEP Marietje Schaake. The award ceremony will take place in Strasbourg on November the 20th, after the European Parliament choses the winner later in October.

Edward Snowden via live video link with Michael Krasny in San Francisco. Taken on 8 November 2017. 🤍 The event: A once-in-a-lifetime evening in conversation with Edward Snowden and Michael Krasny on the Curran stage. Michael Krasny, a Bay Area favorite, is the award-winning host of KQED Forum. He spoke for over an hour with former CIA employee Edward Snowden via live video link. Michael Krasny made sure to allocate time to questions from the audience. Only three or four were chosen. I got lucky with mine - it got picked. I was pretty happy about that. My question for Edward Snowden was: “The Equifax breach affected 145 million Americans this year. In 2015, the Anthem breach impacted 80 million Americans. Is it time to have a discussion about replacing the Social Security Number system? In other words, have we all been hacked?” Snowden paused for nearly five seconds. He then politely replied: “I think the question answers itself.” He then went on to postulate that if the Social Security Number was really meant to be used only by the government, why are big companies insisting on having it? He also wondered that even if a successor to the SSN is produced, how would we secure it? Edward Snowden is a 30-year-old whistleblower and former NSA contractor. He left his home in Hawaii in May 2013, traveling to Hong Kong to leak documents to journalist Glenn Greenwald. At the time of his departure from the US, Snowden worked as a Booz Allen Hamilton systems analyst doing contract work for the NSA. The documents he revealed detailed secret NSA programs and capabilities that have been and continue to be used to collect and store personal communications both within the US and abroad. Documents revealed by Snowden show that the US intelligence community and its partners – including the UK, Israeli and German spy agencies – are involved in warrantless mass surveillance of citizens domestically and abroad. Snowden’s revelations have led to numerous investigations into US surveillance and violations of human rights to privacy and freedom of information. The US, the EU and Brazil all have ongoing investigations into mass surveillance. (Source: 🤍
