How much do you know about Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion? Watch and learn about one of the founding fathers of the modern State of Israel. David Ben-Gurion was the primary national founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. On 14 May 1948, he formally proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel, and was the first to sign the Israeli Declaration of Independence. As Prime Minister, he helped build the state institutions, presiding over various national projects aimed at the development of the country. He also oversaw the absorption of vast numbers of Jews from all over the world in Israel. Ben-Gurion was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Important People of the 20th century.
There are not many political leaders who would step down from power and settle on a kibbutz in the middle of the barren Negev. But then, most leaders aren’t David Ben Gurion. Nor was his modest retirement the only thing that set the first Israeli prime minister apart from those who followed (and we’re not even talking about his fondness for yoga!). While Ben Gurion has become a mythical figure - famed as a bold revolutionary and an idealistic founder - not everything about him was as it seemed, including his name and his ideas. That’s why, this week on History of Israel Explained, we’re counting down 10 essential facts about Ben Gurion and bringing you the truth about the man with the crazy white hair who led Israel to independence. What do you think about our Ben Gurion roundup? Let us know below to get the conversation started! On 18 July 1957, Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion was interviewed by ITN's George Ffitch. He discussed the prospects for peace in the region and the threat to Israel posed by the Arab states of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. When asked about the right of Palestinian refugees to resettle in Israel, Ben-Gurion gave an answer that summed up the intractable dilemma faced by the state of Israel as well as the international community of Palestinian refugees: "If they want to come back to their land, I can't see the reason why they left their land. We didn't compel them to leave, they left on their own will, or rather on the will of the Arab leaders... meanwhile the land was settled by refugees – Jewish refugees from Arab countries, and by Jewish refugees, the remnants of the six million slaughtered by Nazis. They cannot come back unless we expel those from this country, and we are not going to do that." #Israel #Palestine #Israeli #Palestinian #IsraelPalestineConflict #DavidBenBurion #MiddleEast #Egypt #Syria #Jordan To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: 🤍 To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: 🤍 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - 🤍 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - 🤍 🎥 Like us on Facebook - 🤍 🎥 Check out our TikTok - 🤍

Ben-Gurion led the course in Zionist history and shaped the character of the Jewish state. After World War II, he challenged British authority by organizing massive "illegal" immigration and established de facto Jewish state borders, created Jewish settlements throughout the country, and encouraged the development of a Jewish defense capability. In 1948, as head of the Provisional Government, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. In the early years of the state, Ben-Gurion's strong and charismatic leadership led to waves of massive immigration than doubled the country's population. He directed most of the nation's limited resources at integrating immigrants.

On 3 November 2011, the self-appointed media watchdog CAMERA (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America) informed the Journal of Palestine Studies of an incorrect citation in an article by Ilan Pappé ("The 1948 Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine") published in its autumn 2006 issue. The incorrect citation referred to a quotation by Israeli founding father David Ben-Gurion supporting the expulsion ("transfer") of Arabs from Palestine. CAMERA asked JPS to "issue a correction stating that the quote attributed to Ben-Gurion does not appear in the references cited" in JPS and its website "to prevent further erroneous uses of this quote." In this video, JPS editor Rashid Khalidi explains the journal's response, which included the full publication of an English translated letter that Ben-Gurion wrote to his son in 1937.
