The exhibition that never happened! It took about 40 years, until all the “Modena Paintings” by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) have been reunited and are now being displayed together for the very first time. See the extraordinary exhibition "Basquiat. The Modena Paintings" currently at the Fondation Beyeler! In the summer of 1982, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) travelled to Modena in Italy. Gallery owner Emilio Mazzoli had invited the 21-year-old New York artist to produce new works on site for a solo exhibition. Within a few days, Basquiat painted eight large-format canvases, some of them now among his most celebrated and valuable works. Despite this impressive output, however, the planned exhibition did not take place and the works were never shown together. So don't miss out on this unique opportunity and see "Basquiat. The Modena Paintings" now united at Fondation Beyeler until 27 August, 2023! Credits: All works copyright © Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

“The level of precision that you see on each work, it’s caring about that life.” – Doris Salcedo, 2023 Doris Salcedo collects witness statements and testimonies from individuals who have fallen victim to the ongoing conflict in her native Colombia, or deal with issues of migration, displacement and flight on an international level. While these personal narratives are not immediately decipherable in the final artworks, they inform the ways in which she approaches each project, centering her process on the memories of others. This summer, Fondation Beyeler is presenting eight of Doris Salcedo’s major series of works, showing the Colombian artist’s poetic, caring and yet still powerful approach on themes that couldn’t be more topical. Get to see the exhibition “Doris Salcedo” until 17 September at the Fondation Beyeler and discover the impressive works of one of the most important artists of our time. «Wayne Thiebaud» in der Fondation Beyeler (29. Januar – 21. - EN «Wayne Thiebaud» at Fondation Beyeler (29 January until 21 May 2023) The Fondation Beyeler is devoting the first individual exhibition in the German-speaking world to American painter Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021). Thiebaud, who initially started out as a graphic designer and briefly worked for Walt Disney Studios’ animation department, depicted the promise and profusion of the “American way of life” in his paintings of cream cakes, pie slices, candies and cupcakes. Next to such still lifes, the exhibition features figure paintings as well as multi-perspective cityscapes and landscapes, showcasing the painter’s versatility and dazzling technique. His highly sophisticated use of colour seems to breathe life into his motifs and creates a distinctive atmosphere that balances nostalgia, melancholy, irony and humour. Featuring 65 works on loan from mainly American museums and private collections, this retrospective presents the key periods of the artist’s work and invites viewers to explore his visual world and virtuoso painting technique. The collection was converted into a foundation in 1982. It includes approximately 300 paintings and sculptures and gives a personal view of classical modernism. The museum is located in an English park with a historical villa, old trees, and water lily ponds. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the museum is popular for its human-scale architecture and the presentation of the artworks in natural light. Under the direction of Sam Keller, the Fondation Beyeler became the most popular art museum in Switzerland and is considered one of the finest worldwide. The second exhibition in the series (June - September 2017) will show the collection in its present state and includes the acquisitions of contemporary art. The third show presents possible ways in which the Fondation Beyeler's collection could be extended. Beyeler Collection / The Original at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland). The Fondation Beyeler is considered one of the world's most beautiful museums. Its location in the middle of Berower Park, with its old trees, water lily pond and its views of cornfields, grazing cows, vineyards, and the foothills of the Black Forest, is unique. The building was designed by Renzo Piano and is elegantly integrated into this cultural landscape in an ideal combination of nature, art, and architecture. (Fondation Beyeler) The Beyeler Foundation consists of three parts: the Berower Park, acquired from the commune of Riehen in 1976; the 18th-century Berower Villa, which houses the restaurant and the administration; and the new museum. In 1991 Renzo Piano was approached by the Foundation and asked to develop an architectural project. Piano described the assignment as follows: ‘A museum must attempt to reflect the quality of the collection and define its relationship with the outside world. This means it must play an active, but not aggressive, role.’ Two years later, the Foundation was granted building permission for the museum and construction began the following year. The long building covers the whole breadth of the narrow plot between a busy connecting road and a naturally protected area of agricultural land. It consists of two contrasting basic themes: long, solid walls and a light glass roof. All the external walls are clad with red Argentine Patagonian porphyry. The building is based on four 120-metre-long, parallel load-bearing walls about 7 metres apart. The two end façades are glazed and afford a view of the garden. The building is supported by a blind wall facing the road that joins up with the section which accommodates the bookshop, cloakroom, toilets and so on. This wall is a kind of ‘backbone’ or ‘formative zone’ on which the architecture of the whole building is based. The opposite longitudinal wall houses a winter garden with an outside view, a place of relaxation for visitors to the museum. The exhibition rooms which accommodate the collection are based on a well-proportioned grid of approximately 7 by 11 metres, or slightly larger in some cases, and bounded by two of the longitudinal walls. The rooms, which are not organised in any strict linear order, are arranged so that visitors can easily find their way around. (EUMiesAward) The clip is an extract from The Art of Architecture series.

On the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland) is presenting one of the most important artists in its collection: Claude Monet (1840-1926). The exhibition brings together sixty-three masterpieces from private collections and renowned museums such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Pola Museum in Japan, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Art Institute in Chicago. The featured works span Monet’s artistic development from Impressionism to his famous late work. In his paintings, Claude Monet experimented with the changing play of light and colors in the course of the day and the seasons. The show presents his Mediterranean landscapes, wild Atlantic coastal scenes, different stretches of the Seine, meadows with wild flowers, haystacks, water lilies, cathedrals, and bridges shrouded in fog. 15 paintings from various private collections that are seen extremely rarely are special highlights of the show. Fondation Beyeler's first exhibition in 2022 is dedicated to Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986). Georgia O’Keeffe is one of the most significant artists of the 20th century and an outstanding figure in modern American art. The major retrospective at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Basel, Switzerland) offers an in-depth survey of the artist’s work including rarely seen paintings from public and private collections. The show features important works, from O’Keeffe’s earliest abstractions to her iconic depictions of flowers and landscapes of the American Southwest. The exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler examines Georgia O’Keeffe’s particular way of looking at her surroundings and translating them into new and hitherto unseen images of reality. Spanning more than six decades, “Georgia O’Keeffe” will be the artist’s first major retrospective in Basel and the first comprehensive overview of O’Keeffe’s oeuvre in Switzerland for almost 20 years. - Max Ernst (18911976) is one of modernism's most versatile artists. Having started out as a Dadaist in Cologne, he soon became a pioneer of Surrealism in Paris. A tireless creator of new figures, forms and techniques, Max Ernst kept on evolving in new directions even up to his late years. His remarkable oeuvre, which defies any clear stylistic definition, was also shaped by his eventful life and the many different places in which he lived in Europe and America. The major retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler will present an exemplary selection of over 170 paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures and books by Max Ernst that encompass all aspects of his work. For the first time in Switzerland, visitors will be able to experience the full richness of Max Ernst's multifaceted oeuvre.

A virtual stream in cooperation with Beatport and Denon DJ On April 7, 2021, at 8:00 p.m. CEST Fondation Beyeler will open its exhibition halls in the virtual realm, hosting a unique DJ-stream by one of the most renowned electronic music artists Dixon and the creative team of Transmoderna. The stream is broadcasted online in partnership with the music platform Beatport and Nordstern Basel. Throughout the one-hour-long performance, the iconic building of the museum transforms into a hyper-realistic total work of art. Together with the Fondation Beyeler and Nordstern Basel, Beatport will host its first ever virtual DJ-stream – from a fully digitized exhibition space of the renowned Swiss Art Museum. Electronic music artist Dixon will be performing his set in the shape of a hyper- realistic avatar. For the production of this extraordinary art.set, a versatile 3D-environment was melded, which features artworks from the Fondation Beyeler collection by Paul Klee, Auguste Rodin and Wolfgang Tillmans. It was realized by the creative team of Transmoderna, including the neural artist Sofia Crespo, the multimedia artist Sabrina Ratté, the generative artist Feileacan McCormick and thedigital artist Aaron Jablonski. Throughout the stream, the artworks and the building's architecture will be interpolated with artificial intelligence-based visual and particle effects in sync with the music. The result will take the audience beyond anything they have ever seen in a museum. Kicking off in the garden and spacious exhibition halls of Fondation Beyeler, the stream takes the viewer on a groundbreaking immersive experience tingling all senses. Using state-of-the-art technology, Transmoderna's creative team converted the museum's famous architecture into a hyper-real 3D model. Dixon also appears as a hyper-realistic avatar, making it nearly impossible for the audience to differentiate between reality and the virtual. Playing in a DJ booth seamlessly sculpted into the museum's space, the music mixed by the digital character gradually initiates the premises' redesign. Based on the original floor plan of the Fondation Beyeler, the newly created 3D environment goes through a remarkable audio-reactive transformation. Soon the walls' structure responds to the beats and bass of Dixon's set. Out of this process, a virtual architecture emerges that accurately replicates the real world yet impresses with a uniqueness that is distinct from reality. The transformation also affects selected artworks from the Fondation Beyeler collection: paintings by Paul Klee, Auguste Rodin's 'The Thinker', and photographs by Wolfgang Tillmans. Using artificial intelligence, artist Sofia Crespo and architect Feileacan McCormick, both working in generative and neural art, awake new visions of the classics. Additionally, multimedia artist Sabrina Ratté presents her digital sculptures, specially built for the stream. This way, Transmoderna's creative team enables the audience to see how machines of the 21st century imagine the art of the 20th century. Throughout Dixon's one-hour-long performance, all elements unfold surprisingly through the symbiosis between electronic music and creative coding. The idea of how a digital museum tour might look like is exceeded by the immersive experience of a virtual club night. Eventually, the audience themselves will have undergone a transformation: from a museum visitor to a wanderer through the virtual realm of the arts. ► Dixon 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 ► Transmoderna Visual Arts 🤍 🤍 🤍 Credits: Dixon (DJ/Executive producer), Ana Ofak (Transmoderna/creative direction, curator), Timur Novikov (Transmoderna/visual direction, curator), Aaron Jablonski (Transmoderna/techninal direction), Sofia Crespo (Transmoderna/neural artist), Sabrina Ratté (Transmoderna/multimedia artist), Feileacan McCormick (Transmoderna/generative artist), Alan Ixba (Transmoderna/technical assistance), Carlos Minozzi (Transmoderna/videography), Tim Deussen Studio (3D-modeling/Unity support), Mimic Productions (Digital character production/Motion capture), Rania Kim (production), Sandira Blas (PR), Franka Marlene Foth (Choreography), Rauke Lea Hollender (Transmoderna/social media). #Dixon #Transmoderna #FondationBeyeler #Livestream

La Fondazione Beyeler a Basilea

16.07.2022
