16 year old Niamh McCann is passionate about many things including ballet, the plays of William Shakespeare, the environment and public speaking! Her talk looks at the challenges of the high-functioning end of the Autistic Spectrum for girls. Niamh is a quiet, sensitive girl who studied hard, got good grades and not one to cause trouble. She researched the reasons why girls on the spectrum are often misdiagnosed or have late diagnosis. Her hope is that through her talk and sharing what she has learnt, all girls on the spectrum will feel freer to embrace who they are and that those who are yet to be diagnosed are not afraid to do so. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

A couple of years ago Dylan discovered the idea of neurodiversity, the idea that people can be neurologically diverse. This idea was very unpopular amongst many groups who insisted that this was both wrong and dangerous. Dylan set out to write a book (I Am Not A Freak) for children who believed that their mind needs to be corrected. Dylan now considers himself to be an Autism Ambassador for the Kirch Center at University of Rochester Medical Center Strong in Rochester, NY. Dylan’s goal is to inform as many people as possible about the radical thought, that people can be diverse in mind. Dylan Dailor is as 16 year old Autism and Neurodiversity Advocate who is also the author of the book I Am Not A Freak This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Professor Tony Attwood believes the "out of the box" thought processes of people on the autism spectrum will solve the world's big problems. He is credited with being the first clinical psychologist to present Asperger's syndrome not as something to be "fixed " but as a gift, evidenced in many of the great inventors and artists throughout history. But while Professor Attwood has reached the top of his field, he reveals in this episode of Australian Story the personal cost of a missed diagnosis in his own family. Early in his career, he didn't see the signs of Asperger's in his son Will. The consequences were devastating for everyone. Wendy Lampen (Belgium, 1969 🤍lampadedromy) works as a lecturer for a university of applied sciences. She got diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome herself. Trained as a teacher in English, History and Ethics she later on worked with adolescents with autism in a school setting. Next to being an MA in autism, she extensively studied neurotypical (non-autistic) behaviour in order to understand people better. It gave her insight into what really set her apart from (most of the) others: sensory processing and its ongoing processes and the way the two braintypes give meaning to the world they experience. This hightend awareness made her start her own company with her (neurotypical) partner. From her international experience in how different cultures look at autism or 'disorders' in general, Wendy is an advocate for a neuro-divers society. She focusses on the competences and the possibilities of the different braintypes and how they each can contribute to a richer life. For most of his life, broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham didn't tell anyone about the one thing that in many ways has defined his entire existence. Chris is autistic - he has Asperger's Syndrome, which means he struggles in social situations, has difficulty with human relationships and is, by his own admission, 'a little bit weird'. But what if there was a way of taking away these autistic traits? Would Chris ever choose to be 'normal'? In this film, Chris invites us inside his autistic world to try to show what it is really like being him. He lives alone in the woods with his 'best friend' Scratchy the dog, but he also has a long-term partner, Charlotte, who discusses the problems Asperger's creates in their relationship - she describes Chris as being sometimes 'like an alien'. Chris experiences the world in a very different way, with heightened senses that at times are overwhelming, and a mind that is constant bouncing from one subject to the next. Growing up at a time when little was known about autism, Chris wasn't diagnosed with Asperger's until he was in his forties. With scientific advances offering new possibilities to treat his condition, Chris travels to America to witness radical therapies that appear to offer the possibility of entirely eradicating problematic autistic traits, but he also meets those who are challenging the idea that autistic people need to change in order to fit into society. Confronting this deeply personal subject with brutal honesty, and reflecting on the devastating struggles of his adolescence, Chris explores the question of whether he would ever want to be cured himself or whether, ultimately, Asperger's has helped make him who he is today. Asperger's syndrome, also known as high-functioning autism, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an individual's ability to communicate and socialize effectively. People with Asperger's often have difficulty understanding social cues, making friends, and engaging in reciprocal conversation. One of the most common symptoms of Asperger's is difficulty with social communication. People with Asperger's may have difficulty understanding nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. They may also struggle to initiate and maintain conversations, and may appear to be socially awkward or insensitive. Another common symptom of Asperger's is a preoccupation with specific topics or interests. People with Asperger's may become intensely interested in a particular subject and spend hours researching and talking about it. They may also have difficulty shifting their focus to other topics or activities. Sensory processing issues are also common in individuals with Asperger's. They may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to certain sounds, textures, smells, or tastes. This can lead to discomfort or distress in certain situations, such as loud environments or crowded spaces. Additionally, people with Asperger's may have difficulty with executive functioning, which includes skills such as planning, organizing, and completing tasks. They may struggle with time management, prioritization, and following through on commitments. It's important to note that every individual with Asperger's is unique and may experience these symptoms to varying degrees. While Asperger's can present challenges, it's important to recognize the strengths and abilities of individuals with this condition. Many people with Asperger's excel in areas such as mathematics, music, and technology. By understanding the common symptoms of Asperger's and providing appropriate support and accommodations, individuals with this condition can thrive and achieve their goals.

This video is a photo montage of my childhood pictures along with stories that in hindsight can be explained knowing now that I am on the Autism Spectrum. My aspergers childhood stories highlight some early signs autism had a big impact of my experience growing up. My name is Paul and I discovered I have Aspergers at age 30. If you're new you can check out a playlist of some of my most popular videos here: 🤍 Yes, I know, I don't look autistic. That's exactly why I started this blog, because if I didn't show you, you would never know. As the name suggests, this channel is devoted to giving you insight into the world of Aspergers. This blog started off being just my story, but I've learned SO MUCH about my own condition from meeting others on the Autism Spectrum that now I make sure to feature their stories as well. I've come a long way in my own personal journey. Now I'm sharing what I've found so you don't have to learn it the hard way too. - // WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS BLOG I value your time which means there are NO YOUTUBE ADS on my videos. You can expect me to get to the point with concise useful information. I focus on what is most important and don't shy away from difficult topics. The best way to learn about Autism is to see it in real life ( i.e. via the stories of many, many people on the spectrum). In this channel I endeavour to show you what Autism and Aspergers look like in real people and to also give you some insight as to what's happening on the inside. I upload a new video every weekend with some bonus content thrown in mid-week too. There's always new stuff coming through so be sure to check back and see what you've missed. (Is this where I'm supposed to tell you to hit that subscribe button?) Topics Include: - What is Aspergers/Autism? - Aspie Tips, coping strategies, and advice on common issues - Learning Emotional Intelligence (this is my special interest!) - Autism in real life: stories from special guests Everything I do is and endeavour to go deeper and take you 'behind the scenes' to understand what may, at first glance, seem 'odd'. oh, and I love busting stereotypes and turning preconceptions upsidedown :) - // ABOUT ME I discovered I have aspergers at the age of thrity.
